单选题The making of glass is a very old industry -- at least 4 500 years old. Glass has many extraordinary qualities and it is often being used in new ways. One of the most interesting new uses for glass is in telephone communication. Scientists have developed glass fibres as thin as human hair which are designed to carry light signals. When the light reaches the other end, it is first changed into electrical signals which are in turn changed into sound messages. Called lightwave communication, the new system was used, successfully in an experiment in Chicago in 1977.During the experiment, two glass fibres were able to carry 672 conversations at the same time. The lightwave cable, containing 144 glass fibres,is able to carry 50 000 conversations at the same time. The lightwave communication system has two important advantages. First the glass fibre cables are smaller and weigh less than copper cables. Second, they cost less. Perhaps it can be said that telephone communication has entered the age of light.

单选题After losing her job and home in 1984, Lynn Carr was living on the streets of St. Charles, Montana, with her five-year-old son. "We slept in our car for about a week," she said, "but then it was sold." As she moved from one friend's house to another, Carr began working toward a high-school-equivalence diploma(高中同学学历证书), listening to self-help tapes and making cheesecakes. After developing some new methods which she thought were pretty good, she offered her cakes to a restaurant. They sold out in a matter of hours. The following year, she met a man at a church service and before long, they married. Cart began selling the cheesecakes out of their home. Later she opened a cheesecake company. As business became better and better, Cart didn't forget where she came from. All the women she hires are mothers or high school dropouts(退学者) -- workers most other employers wouldn't like to hire. Her dozen workers make 100 to 150 cakes a week and Cart owes her success to her employees. She says, "We're going to have a learning center and a day-care center in the company. Part of the workday will be spent studying for high-school-equivalence diplomas." Recently, a 33-year-old woman with three children to raise was referred to Carr. She hired her at once. "It has been a real blessing(恩赐) ," the woman said.

I am a computer expert. I have been in
the field for only a short time. I never learned much in the way of science or
math. And I am quite puzzled by things like engineering or
electronics. Then why am I able to write about computers? I can
write on this subject because of these shortcomings. The last two years of
learning has been a hard test for me. By hard work I have managed to learn
enough to use computers fairly well, and to work with people who know a great
deal more than I. Since I have learned all this at such personal cost, I would
like to share my know-ledge with others. More and more people want to know about
computers, and want to know quickly. The best way to learn is to
take a course. However, many people do not have the time for this. They will
have to find some other ways to get some basic information. I hope to be able to
help them by writing about some of the things I have learned by
myself. I have a home computer on which I've learned in my own
time. I have used it like a home study course. I have sat down with it day after
day, night after night. I have forced it to give up some of its secrets. Now I
can use it to do some of the work that I get paid for. And I can do this work in
my own home, instead of in an office. Many people may soon be working in a
computer at home, just as many now take in other people's typing.
Some things about computers are easier than you may fear. First, computers
are logical. Things that at first seem difficult will make sense to you after
you learn the rules. Second, it is really not hard to learn enough to use
today's machines. You do not need to be a great brain. But you do have to learn
to think in new ways. And you do have to keep a good bit of information in your
head. Finally, there are many people around who are really enthusiastic (热心的)
about computers. These people are always happy to be of
help.

单选题Want a glance of the future of health care? Take a look at the way the various networks of people about patient care are being connected to one another, and how this new connectivity is being exploited to deliver medicine to the patient--no matter where he or she may be. Online doctors offering advice based on normal symptoms are the most obvious example. Increasingly, however, remote diagnosis will be based on real physiological data from the actual patient. A group from the University of Kentucky has shown that by using personal data assistance plus a mobile phone, it is perfectly practical to send a patient's important signs over the telephone. With this kind of equipment, the cry asking whether there was a doctor in the house could well be a thing of the past. Other medical technology groups are working on applying telemedicine to rural care. And at least one team wants to use telemedicine as a tool for disaster need--especially after earthquakes. On the whole, the trend is towards providing global access to medical data and experts' opinions. But there is one problem. Bandwidth is the limiting factor for sending complex medical pictures around the world--CT photos being one of the biggest bandwidth users. Communication satellites may be able to deal with the short-term needs during disasters such as earthquakes or wars. But medicine is looking towards both the second-generation Internet and third-generation mobile phones for the future of remote medical service. Doctors have met to discuss computer-based tools for medical diagnosis, training and telemedicine. With the falling price of broadband communications, the new technologies should start a new time when telemedicine and the sharing of medical information, experts' opinions and diagnosis are common.
