单选题After losing her job and home in 1984, Lynn Carr was living on the streets of St. Charles, Montana, with her five-year-old son. "We slept in our car for about a week," she said, "but then it was sold. " As she moved from one friend's house to another, Carr began working toward a high-school-equivalence diploma(高中同等学历证书), listening to self-help tapes and making cheesecakes. After developing some new methods which she thought were pretty good, she offered her cakes to a restaurant. They sold out in a matter of hours. The following year, she met a man at a church service and before long, they married. Carr began selling the cheesecakes out of their home. Later she opened a cheesecake company. As business became better and better, Carr didn't forget where she came from. All the women she hires are mothers or high school dropouts(退学者) — workers most other employers wouldn't like to hire. Her dozen workers make 100 to 150 cakes a week and Carr owes her success to her employees. She says, "We're going to have a learning center and a day-care center in the company. Part of the workday will be spent studying for high-school-equivalence diplomas. " Recently, a 33-year-old woman with three children to raise was referred to Carr. She hired her at once. "It has been a real blessing(恩赐),"the woman said.

Women have more problems than men in
old age. First of all, they have less money—or no money at all—and because of
this, they often feel they get less respect, even at home. Quite a large number
have no pension (退休金) because they have never worked outside the home, and
thirty-eight percent are supported mainly by their husbands or children. Second,
a larger number of old women than old men become widows (single women). Men are
normally older than the women they marry, and women generally live longer than
men. The remarriage among older widows is lower than that among widowers (single
men). Statistics (统计) from 1990 in Shanghai show only 52 percent of elderly
women with husbands still living, compared to (与……相比) 82 percent of
men. Because of lower incomes and the difficulty of remarriage,
many elderly women who live alone, are poor and have almost no social life. Even
an old couple lives with children, it is the woman who ends up doing the work
around the house. She cleans the rooms, prepares meals, and takes care of the
family. Some 75 percent of them carry out such heavy physical tasks as buying
and carrying grain, coal and other supplies for the home. How to improve the
quality of life of women in their later years is a problem that needs to be
dealt with by all the society.

单选题RolfBlum, a Wuppertal fireman, knows that life and death are just seconds apart.
When fire can kill within a few breaths, anything which gives him a little extra time is vital.
Du Pont has spent years working with fire authorities to help give them those extra seconds.
The result is a lightweight, fire resistant fibre: NOMEX Ⅲ.
A suit of NOMEX III allows firemen to work closer to a fire, and enabled Roll Blum and his colleagues to rescue a little girl. Without it, he wouldn"t have been able to reach her.
NOMEX III is now standard wear for the fire brigades of many cities including Frankfurt, London and Milan, providing those vital extra seconds which could last a lifetime.
Safety is just one area in which Du Pont is making important breakthroughs. Through Research & Development investment in excess of $1.3 billion each year and close cooperation with specialists in areas such as industry, agriculture and medicine, Du Pont is bringing technology to life.
