单选题Pepys and his wife Jane had asked some friends to dinner on Sunday, September 2nd, 1666. They were up very late on the Saturday evening, getting everything ready for the next day, and while they were busy they saw the glow(微弱的光)of a fire start in the sky. By 3 o"clock on the Sunday morning, its glow had become so bright that Jane woke her husband to watch it. Pepys
slipped
on his dressing-gown and went to the window to watch it. It seemed fairly far away, and after a time he went back to bed. When he got up in the morning, it looked, though the fire was dying down, as though he could still see some flames. So he set to work to tidy his room and put his things back where he wanted them.
While he was doing this, Jane came in to say that she had heard the fire was a bad one; hundreds of houses had been burned down in the night and the fire was still burning. Pepys went out to see for himself. He went to the Tower of London and climbed upon a high part of the building so that he could see what was happening. From there, Pepys could see that it was, indeed, a bad fire and that even the houses on London Bridge were burning. The man of the Tower told him that the fire had started in a baker"s shop in Pudding Lane(小巷); the baker"s house had caught fire from the over-heated oven(烤箱) and then the flames had quickly spread to the other houses in the narrow lane. So the Great Fire of London, a fire that lasted nearly five days, destroyed most of the old city and ended, as it is said, at Pie Corner.

单选题One night in February 1962, John H. Glenn, Jr. , flew over Australia. The man in the Mercury (水星号) capsule (太空舱) was alone, but friendly voices reached him by radio. On the dark land 100 miles below, he saw a sprinkling (零星) of lights. They marked the city of Perth, where people had turned on their lights as a greeting to him. In Friendship 7, Glenn radioed, "Tile lights show up very well. Thank everybody for turning them on." His capsule raced on to the east. During his three orbits of the earth, Glenn could always reach one of eighteen tracking stations. Some of them were on ships at sea. Others were in the United States. Many of the stations had been built with the help of the other countries. These countries allowed Americans to bring in radio equipment and set it up. Without the help of such lands as Nigeria, Zanzibar, and Mexico, there would have been breaks in the worldwide radio network. John Glenn, Jr. , was the first American to orbit the earth. Pot his flight, the tracking network covered 60,000 route miles. Five hundred people worked in the stations along the route. Since his flight, the network has grown. Today, it covers more thanlO0,000 route mi- les and has about one hundred stations. One-third of these stations arc outside the United States.

I'm more of a host than a guest. I
like people to stay with me but do not care about staying with them, and usually
say I am busy. I think the life without friends is regrettable; the life without
quietness is terrible. The only people I ask to stay with me are
those 1 like. But I am still more delighted when they go, and the house is ours
again. I feel that I may be mistaken in these guests, and this may happen at
times. They leave me more room in which to live properly. My mind, like my body,
wears its old clothes again. I like to think about life in this world, and it is
not easy to do this when talkative people are all over the place.
With the guests about, I find myself a solid. I feel uneasy. Often I feel
I have nothing meaningful to say. I try my best to think of something
interesting and useful to devote them. But usually it seems that no one
appreciate what I focus on. Many times I even got angry over what they said,
which made them upset. Frankly speaking; I am not used to gathering together
with friends chatting, although I'd like them to stay with me. Somehow I feel
nervous with them. But as soon as they have gone, I release myself completely. I
expand into a gas again. And a gas can have more delight than solid.
So goodbye! Guests.
