单选题Nothing was going right for Dr. Turner at the hospital. He made a mistake while operating on a patient. He felt sure he was no longer trusted and decided to change his job. One day he learned from the paper that a doctor was looking for a partner. The doctor, whose name was Johnson, lived in Thorby, a small town in the north of England. A few days later Dr. Turner went to Thorby, and arrived at Dr. Johnson's home early in the afternoon. Though old and a little deaf (聋的), Dr. Johnson still had a good brain. He kept talking to the visitor about the town and its people. When they turned to the question of partnership, it was already seven in the evening. Dr. Johnson invited Dr. Turner to have dinner with him in a restaurant before catching the train back to London. Dr. Turner noticed that Dr. John son was fond of good food and expensive wines. They had an excellent meal. When the bill was brought, Dr. Johnson felt in his pocket. "Oh, dear," he said. "I've forgotten my money." "That's all right," Dr. Turner said. "I' 11 pay the bill." As he did so, he began to wonder whether Dr. Johnson was worthy of trust.

单选题 The Earth has a force that pulls thing toward itself. We
call this force gravity (地心引力). This is something we live with all the time, and
we take it for granted and hardly ever think about it. But it is a most
important factor (因素) in rocket (火箭) operation and must overcome (克服) if we are
to get anywhere in space, or off the ground at all. Take the
throwing of a ball as an example. The harder the ball is thrown, the faster and
higher it will go. What is the secret? Its speed. If we could throw the ball
hard enough it would go up and up forever and never come down. The speed at
which it would have to be thrown do this is known as escape speed. Of course, we
cannot throw a ball hard enough because the speed required to escape completely
from the Earth's gravity is seven miles per second, or over twenty-five thousand
miles per hour. Once a spacecraft has reached escape speed, no
further power is needed. A rocket aimed at the Moon, for instance, will "coast"
(滑行) the rest of the way because the Earth's gravity cannot then pull it back,
and there is no air resistance (阻力) in space to slow it down. This "coasting" is
known as "free fall" Free fall is an important feature (特点) of space travel: it
would be impossible to carry enough fuel to provide powered flight all the
time.

单选题As more women in the United States are working now, more are finding it necessary to make business trips alone. Since this is still new for many,
some tips are certainly in order.
If you are married, it is a good idea to encourage your husband and children to learn to cook a few simple meals while you axe away. They will be much happier and probably they will enjoy the experience. If you will be eating alone a good deal, choose good restaurants. In the end, they will be much better for your digestion (消化). You may also find it useful to call the restaurant in advance and state that you will be eating alone. You will probably get better service and almost certainly a better table. Finally, and most importantly, get fully prepared what you will need in your travel as a businesswoman; this starts with lightweight luggage which you can easily carry even when fully packed. Take a folding case inside your suitcase; it will be very useful for dirty clothes, as well as for business documents (文件) and papers you no longer need on the trip. And make sure you have a briefcase(公文箱) so that you can keep the papers you need separate. Obviously, experience helps, but you can make things easier on yourself from the first by careful planning, so that right from the start you really can have a good trip.
