单选题Infrared Scanning Technology How do we get more young people to increase their consumption of iron-rich foods? Many nutritionists are advocating the fortification of a number of foods. This may help, but I contend that we should also intensify our efforts in nutrition education among our young people. I simply do not believe the argument that it is futile (徒劳的) to try to change eating habits. Once an intelligent person--and this includes adolescents--understands the need for a healthy diet, I think he 6r she will act accordingly. As for specific actions: I suggest that blood hemoglobin (血红蛋白) should be checked as a routine part of a youngster's yearly physical. It should contain at least 11 grams per 100 milliliters of blood for a girl and at least 12 grams for a boy. If it is any lower, the physician probably will prescribe an easily absorbed iron supplement. Adolescents--and everyone else--should cut out highly processed foods and drinks, which may be how in iron and other nutrients. Read the labels for iron content. Especially make sure that all bakery products are made with enriched flour or whole grains. Try adding liver, chicken, beef, veal or any other variety to the weekly menu. Finally, even when you're trying to lose weight, always eat a sensible, well-balanced diet made up of a variety of fresh of very lightly processed foods. This way, you stand a good chance of getting not only enough iron, but also adequate amounts of all the other essential nutrients.

单选题Pisa is an Italian city known for its Leaning Tower. The Tower, interestingly enough, started leaning in the middle of its construction — when its first three stories were completed. Bonnano Pisano, the engineer in charge, tried to correct the lean by making the new stories slightly taller on the short side, only to find that the added marble caused the Tower to sink still further. Work was suspended several times as engineers sought fresh solutions, until the Tower was finished in the 14th century, still leaning. The construction, begun in 1174, nearly took 200 years. In modern times the structure has been several times strengthened by cement, but to this day it is still in danger of collapse. Various schemes have been under consideration for saving, it. To rebuild an upright tower would be easy enough for modern engineering, but it would not be the same edifice as people love and remember it. The Leaning Tower must be left leaning, saved, not reconstructed. There is nothing really wrong with a leaning tower — after all, Galileo climbed to the top and did his experiment by throwing down weights. In the meantime, the Tower has been closed to the public since 1990.

单选题The Internet is a way of life for US college students. A recent survey by Harris Interactive and 360 youth found that 93 per cent of American college students visit the Internet, and this market is expected to grow from 15.2 million in 2003 to 16.4 million in 2007. That is slow but it could be the result of the already high number of Internet college users. About 88 per cent of American college students own a computer, and more than half have broadband (宽带) connections. Furthermore, 67 per cent own cell phones and 36 per cent use their mobile devices to visit the Internet. Study findings show that 42 per cent go online mainly to communicate socially, and 72 per cent of college students check emails at least once a day, with 66 per cent using at least two email addresses. The most popular online social activity is sending messages to friends or family, with 37 per cent of college students saying they do so. The study also looked beyond the Internet surfing habits and into the buying habits of this group, and found them responsible for more than $ 210 billion in sales last year alone. College students have learned how to spend their money, with 93 per cent saying low prices were important when shopping. The study also shows that 65 per cent make loan (贷款) payments; 41 per cent of freshmen have a credit card; and 79 per cent of seniors have a credit card. A great number of charges on those credit cards are likely to be for entertainment and leisure expenses.

单选题{{B}}B{{/B}} Sleep is something we generally connect with living things. Of course, it is true that a tot of animals sleep, but scientists are not certain that primitive (原始的) forms of animal life like worms ever really sleep. On the other hand, animals such as bears sleep for 4 or 5 months every year. The amount of sleep that a human being needs depends on age, tile individual and possibly race. For example, doctors think pre-school children need between 10 and 12 hours a night; school children between 9 and 11 hours; and adults between 7 and 9 hours. There are cases of old people who only sleep between 2 and 3 hours a day and continue to be active and healthy. The sleep requirements Of different races also appear to be different. Japanese people, for example, sleep fewer hours than Europeans. It is not known whether mental activity (except dreaming) occurs when a person is asleep. However, it is certainly true that some people can wake up at a particular time. There are also stories about scientists who solve difficult problems during sleep, because their subconscious (潜意识的) minds continue working on the problem. Some types of nightmares are quite common: the dreamer is falling from a tree; or an animal is running after him. Some people say these two occur because man's ancestors (祖先) lived in trees and were in constant danger from wild animals.
