单选题Do you often feel the quality of the goods we buy these days isn't as good as it ought to be? In the past, when things were made by hand, it seems there was a lot of pride in individual workmanship. People were really proud of things they made. But now, of course, individuals don't make things. Most things are made on assembly lines and one person only has a very small part in putting something together so there isn't any workmanship any more. A good example of this is a friend of mine, Mary. She bought a toaster last summer at a sale. She used it, I guess, pretty often, but she only had it a couple of months when suddenly the plastic base of the toaster cracked wide open, and at the same time the heating system in the toaster burned out. She took it back to the store, but the clerk in the store said they wouldn't take it back, and they wouldn't give her money back, because she bought it on sale. So the only thing she could do was to buy a new one. I'm sure Mary is more careful when she buys things now, and that's what we all have to be.

单选题The winter holiday season is the most festive (欢乐的) time of the year. Students from elementary school through college have about two weeks' vacation , beginning shortly before Christmas and ending soon after New Year's Day. Many families go away for the holidays, but those who stay home have fun, too. There are many parties to cel- ebrate the birth of Christ and the arrival of the new year. The spirit of Christmas arrives about a month before the holiday itself. Late in November, street lights and store windows are decorated (装饰) with Christmas colours of red and green. Stores depend on Christmas shoppers for about one-fourth of their yearly sales. Christmas is expensive. To earn extra money for gifts, in December many Americans get part-time jobs. Many people make monthly bank deposits (存款)in special Christmas accounts so that they will have enough money for a nice Christmas. The most beautiful and meaningful parts of the holiday take place at home and in church. Many families go to church on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. After that, they gather around the tree and open their gifts. Then they sit down to enjoy a Christmas dinner— turkey (火鸡) or ham, sweet potatoes, vegetables and cranberry sauce (酸果蔓酱).

单选题One night, a little before nine o'clock, Dr Johnson was answering a telephone call. He was asked to go and give an operation to a very sick boy at once. The boy was in a small hospital in Glens Falls, sixty miles away from Dr Johnson's city--Albany. The boy had hurt himself in a traffic accident. His life was in danger, but his family was so poor that they could not pay the doctor anything. After he heard all this, Dr Johnson was driving carefully. He thought that he could get to the hospital before 12 o'clock. A few minutes later, the doctor's car had to stop for a red light at a crossing. Suddenly a man in an old black coat opened the door of the car and got in. "Drive on", he said. "I've got a gun (枪)." "I'm a doctor," said Johnson. "I'm on my way to a hospital to operate on a very sick..." "Don't talk," said the man in the old black coat. "Just drive." A mile out of the town he ordered the doctor to stop the car and get out. Then the man drove on down the road. The doctor stood for a moment in the snow. A half hour, Dr Johnson found a telephone and called a taxi (出租车). At the railway (铁路) station he learned that the next train to Glens Falls would not leave until 12 o'clock. It was after two o'clock in the morning when the doctor arrived at the hospital in Glens Falls. Miss Clarke, a nurse, was waiting for him. "I did my best," said Dr Johnson. Miss Clarke said. "The boy died an hour ago." They walked into the waiting room. There sat the man in the old black coat, with his head in his hands. "Mr Shute," said Miss Clarke to the man, "this is Dr Johnson. He had come all the way from Albany to try to save your boy./
