单选题 An ichthyologist is a scientist who studies fish. Most people who do this job say they love their work because it is very rewarding (值得做的) and varied (多样的). They work not only inside a laboratory, but also out in the field. Field work includes traveling to river, oceans and lakes in order to collect information and specimens (样本). Reading, writing and speaking are also very important to the job. Fish scientists need to read the research of other scientists. They must be able to write up their own research clearly so that others can follow it. Ichthyologists who wish to specialize can choose any one of three areas of study. The first area is aquaculture (水产养殖). This involves (包含) the study and practice of fish farming and management. The second area is fisheries science, which means working with a team of scientists to find out more about different fish species (品种). The third area is about the protection of natural fish populations. To become a successful fish scientist, you need to be able to work on your own. You also need to be able to manage equipment and perform experiments; but most importantly, you must love fish. To become an ichthyologist, you will need to train at a university to pass a Bachelor (学士) of Science degree. For this, you will need to be good at mathematics, physical science and biology. Then, you will need to study for another year to complete an honours degree in ichthyology.

单选题When John Weston awoke that morning, he remembered that his mother was going into hospital. He hadn't worked out what was wrong with her. He knew, though, she hadn't been well for some time now, and it bad become familiar to him to see her eyes narrowed in a sudden attack of pain, and her hand pressing against her heart. Their own doctor, who she had finally gone to for advice, had sent her to a specialist who knew all about these things. He had told her that just as soon as there was a bed for her, she would have to come into his hospital where he could look after her himself. During the weeks since then the pains had come ever more frequently, and the narrowed eyes be came an almost lasting part of her expression. Always rather sharp, she began losing her temper over little things so that John's father kept his thoughts to himself more and more. John, as ready as possible to make allowances (体谅), tried to think what it would be like to have toothache all the time and how bad-tempered that would make you. So his mother would go into hospital for a few days. He was going to stay with his Aunt Daisy till she came back, and his father would stay on at home by himself. John's cousin, Mona, was to come in and make the bed and wash the pots and dust round, now and again. That was the arrangement, and John didn't care much for it. Apart from missing his mother (and she was glad she was going away be cause they would make her better), he wasn't very fond of his Aunt Daisy because she was even more bad-tempered than her mother.

单选题{{B}}B{{/B}} The research was done by a Dr. Griffiths in England. He compared the behavior of 15 regular gamblers (赌徒) with those of 15 non-regular gamblers before and after they gambled. Both groups had increased heart rates during gambling because it was exciting. But the regular gamblers' heart rates went down almost straight after the game, while the non-regulars remained excited and had in- creased heart rates for longer. When the heart beat increases, the body produces one chemical called endorphins which make you feel good. Dr. Griffiths thinks that regular gamblers lose this good feeling soon after a game and need to play again quickly to regain the pleasure. He has also discovered that regular gamblers have different psychological reactions (心理反应) from non-regular gamblers. In an experiment where regular and non-regular gamblers spoke their thoughts aloud while playing, regular gamblers had far more unreasonable thoughts. In their minds they turned losses into near wins. Dr. Griffiths thinks that nearly winning gives the gambler a high in the same way that a win would do. Based on Dr. Griffiths' s research, doctors suggest that one way to help regular gamblers to give up gambling is to give them β-blockers-drugs (β受体阻滞药) that stop them getting a high in the first place.
