Visiting US President George W. Bush
said in Beijing on Friday that both China and the United States should encourage
bilateral contacts and exchanges to promote mutual understanding.
"It's important for our political leaders to come to China," said Bush,
who gave a speech on Friday morning at Qinghua University, one of the most
prestigious universities in China. His working visit to China
and discussions with Qinghua students "help promote" Sine-US relations, Bush
said in response to a student's question about what he would do to promote
Sine-US relations. "Many people in my country are very
interested in China," he said, adding that these Americans want to learn more
about China's culture and the Chinese people. He said that he
would keep encouraging such contacts and exchanges between the two
countries. Bush said that he would describe back home what he
had seen here and that China as a great nation not only has a "great history"
but also an "unbelievably exciting future." The president said
that the 2008 Olympic Games would make a significant opportunity for the rest of
the world to understand China, which enables more people to come to China and
feel the modernization taking place, and many more people will see it on the
television. Bush arrived in Beijing on Thursday for a two-day
working visit to China.

单选题There are three kinds of memory: sense memory, working memory, and long-term memory. Think of them as three connected rooms in which you store different kinds of memories. The first kind of memory is sense memory. Everything you are sensing right now is stored here. Perhaps you feel the sun on your face or smell the aroma(香味) of food. Sense memories last only a few seconds, but they connect one moment to the next. They give your life a flow, even though they are quickly forgotten. You keep a few items(条目) in working memory. These are memories you need for what you are doing. Suppose you look up a friend's telephone number in the phone book. You'll probably remember the number for a little while. But if you get distracted(分神), you might quickly forget it. A memory usually stays in your working memory for just a few days at most. Working memory has another limit, too. Only a small number of items fit into it at any given time. Memories you want to keep for a long time go into your long-term memory. They can stay with you all your life. In long-term memory, you can store a huge number of items. Can you remember how to play your favorite game? Do you recall your first birthday party? If so, you are bringing up memories that are stored in your long-term memory. Sometimes, people have trouble finding a particular long-term memory. Have you ever struggled to remember a familiar name or fact? When this happens, people sometimes say the information is "on the tip of the tongue".

单选题Bananas are widely believed to grow on trees: this is incorrect. The banana is a plant which finishes all its growth in one year, reaching a height of 30 feet. Bananas have a subterranean (地下的) stem from which come large, green leaves. The plant reaches its maturity in about 18 months.
As the bunches of bananas mature and the fruit develops, they can be propped (支撑) up with poles and covered with blue polyethylene (聚乙烯) bags. These prevent injury, protect against the frost, and speed ripening by increasing heat and humidity.
Once the bananas plant has produced its fruit, the mother plant dies and is replaced by pups (sucker plants).
These grow next to the parent and make a new generation of banana plants.

Everyone wants the best for a baby. A
mother wants her baby to have the best in the ways of food, toys, clothing and
equipment. Her value judgments on prices may go wrong when it comes to buying
for a baby, particularly the first one. Factory producers and advertisers
recognize this, and exploit it to the full. Far more is spent in buying
push-chairs, special milk, and special powders for small babies than is
necessary. The child himself watches television, a particularly
strong influence on small children. Looking at them as they watch television,
and then watching them react to products afterwards, suggests that young
children accept the television advertisements as well as the guidance offered by
children's pro- grams, and find both equally attractive. The child comes early
in life to the feeling widespread in this country that if something is said on
television it must be true. For this reason much Christmas-gift
advertising, and advertising for sweets, food and washing powders, is specially
designed for children because of the effect their repeated nagging can have on
their mothers. By exercising in this way they become consumers at an early age
and as a result, with present-day pressures, choosing and buying goods and
services will remain an important part of their future
lives.
