单选题I feel very excited at the thought that in another week I shall be with you again on holiday. I have enjoyed my stay in England very much indeed. Mr. Brown and classmates are nice to me, but, as they say in England, "There's no place like home," and I think you feel this above all at Christmas time. I am leaving here early on Thursday, the 23rd, and I shall arrive in Basle on Friday morning, so I shall be home somewhere about lunchtime. Can you meet me at the station, as I shall have a lot of luggage? In some of my earlier letters I have told you all about the other students here, well, I want to ask my Polish friend Jan to come and spend Christmas with us. Will that be all right? His father and mother died last year, he can not go home for Christmas, and he has no friend in England except the Browns. He is a nice boy. I know you all like him, and I feel sure he will enjoy Christmas with us. It is very short notice, but you are always pleased, I know, if we bring our friends home. However, I have not yet invited him, as I thought it was better to ask you first. Please let me know as soon as possible if it will be all right.

Computer programmer Brendan Tammy
earned £55 000 a year by designing new computer games, yet he cannot find a bank
prepared to let him have a check card. Instead, he has been told to wait another
two years until he is 18. He works for a small company in
Liverpool, where most young people of his age are looking for jobs. Brendan's
biggest headache is how to use his money. Though he has high payment, he cannot
drive a car, or get credit cards (信用卡). Brendan got his job four
months ago, a year after leaving school with six O-levels (普通考试科目) and
working for a time in a computer shop. "I got the job because the people who run
the company knew I had already written some programs," he said.
"I suppose 55 000 pounds sounds a lot but I hope it will come to more than
that this year." He spends some of his money on records and clothes, and gives
his mother 20 pounds a week as he lives with his parents. But most of his spare
time is spent working. "Unfortunately, computing was not part of our
studies at school," he said. "But I had been studying it in books and magazines
for four years in my spare time. I knew what I wanted to do and never considered
staying on at school. Most people in this business are fairly young, anyway. I
would like to earn a million and I suppose early retirement (退休) is a
possibility. You never know when the market might disappear.

单选题Dogs are social animals and they will act like wild animals without proper training. They will destroy your house, bark excessively, fight other dogs and even hurt you. Almost all behavior problems are normal dog activities. The efficient way to prevent or treat behavior problems is learning to instruct the dog to redirect its normal behavior. One of the best things you can do for both your dog and yourself is to give it obedience training. Obedience training doesn't solve all behavior problems, but it is the basis for solving just about any problem. Training promotes connection between you and your pets. Efficient communication is necessary to instruct your dog about what you want it to do and what you don't want. Training is also a simple method to establish the social rank system. When your dog obeys a simple request such as "come here, sit" , which is showing obedience and respect for you. It is unnecessary to establish yourself as top dog or leader of the dog pack(群) by using extreme measures. You can teach your dog its subordinate (从属的) role by teaching it to obey to you. Training should be fun and rewarding for you and your dog. It can enrich your relationship and make living together more enjoyable. A well-trained dog can be safer to others when allowed a greater amount of freedom.

Pisa is an Italian city known for its
Leaning Tower. The Tower, interestingly enough, started leaning
in the middle of its construction — when its first three stories were completed.
Bonnano Pisano, the engineer in charge, tried to correct the lean by making the
new stories slightly taller on the short side, only to find that the added
marble caused the Tower to sink still further. Work was suspended several times
as engineers sought fresh solutions, until the Tower was finished in the 14th
century, still leaning. The construction, begun in 1174, nearly took 200
years. In modern times the structure has been several times
strengthened by cement, but to this day it is still in danger of collapse.
Various schemes have been under consideration for saving, it. To rebuild an
upright tower would be easy enough for modern engineering, but it would not be
the same edifice as people love and remember it. The Leaning Tower must be left
leaning, saved, not reconstructed. There is nothing really wrong with a leaning
tower — after all, Galileo climbed to the top and did his experiment by throwing
down weights. In the meantime, the Tower has been closed to the public since
1990.
