单选题James Cook was born in Britain on October 27, 1728. He commanded (指挥) three voyages of discovery for Great Britain, and sailed around the world twice. Captain Cook's voyages led to the founding of colonies (殖民地) throughout the Pacific by several European countries. He is considered one of the world's greatest explorers. Cook was an apprentice (学徒) to a shipping company at age 18, and joined the British Navy at 27 in 1755. In 1768, the Navy appointed him leader of a scientific expedition (远征) to Tahiti to observe a solar eclipse (日食) by Venus. He also had secret orders to look for a southern continent geographer (地理学者) who worked on the research on the world. He set out on his first voyage round the world in the ship voyage. The trip to Tahiti was successful. In October 1769 Cook was the first European to visit New Zealand. On Cook's second journey he sailed farther south than any other European. He circled Antarctica in his famous ship Resolution, but the ice surrounding the continent prevented the sighting of land. The existence of the Antarctica remained unproved until 1840. He returned to England in 1775 and was promoted (提升) to Captain.

单选题I came to India a year ago to find a village in which I could live and write, but it was many months before I settled down. I wasted a lot of time looking for the "typical" village. Yet no such thing exists. Often the villagers themselves were puzzled. Why had I come? I had put aside my work as a newspaper reporter because my ideas had changed. I had come to believe that what was happening in the developing countries was more important than anything else. But to understand how three-quarters of the world's people live, and how their future might affect ours, I felt that I first had to try and share their way of life. In the end I chose a mountain village because it was a little cooler than those in the plains. I took the bus from town along a rough road. Then came a rough walk down a path to the river. After this I began the climb into the hills. Every time I stopped to catch my breath, there was a wonderful sight After several hours walk the village was in sight.

单选题This old story is about an old man and a clever monkey. Aesop, a Greek writer first told the story many years ago. This monkey belonged to the old man. The old man likes the garden very much. When birds came to the garden the monkey chased them away. He also helped the old man in many other ways. The old man often fell asleep during the day in his chair. Then the monkey sat at the old man's side and chased the flies away from the old man's face. One hot afternoon in the summer, the old man was asleep in his chair. A fly came and sat on the end of the old man's face. The monkey chased it away. Soon the fly came back and sat on the old man's face again. The monkey chased it away. This continued about four or five times. The monkey at last became very angry. He jumped up, ran to the garden, and picked up a large stone. The next time when the fly sat on the old man's face, the monkey hit it hard with the stone. He killed the fly. But unfortunately he broke the old man's face.
单选题December 13th, 2005Dear Sirs, I am very happy to apply for the position of secretary, which you advertised in China Daily of December 10, 2005. I have been working as a secretary at a college office. Because I am the only secretary in the office, it is necessary for me to work quickly and efficiently and to be flexible in my daily work. Professors value my work and my ability to meet their needs. Although I am happy now, I feel that my promotion (晋升) is limited here, and I would like to have a more challenging job. Therefore, I enrolled (参加) in a program to expand my knowledge of international business affairs. Now, both my English and Chinese have been improved and I am ready to begin working as a bilingual secretary in an international company like yours, and I believe I can be a great help to your firm. The enclosed resume gives further details of my qualifications, and I would appreciate it if you could give me an opportunity to have an interview. I am looking forward to receiving your call at 62428866 or please use the enclosed pre-paid postcard to send me your reply. Thank you very much for your consideration. Faithfully Yours, Mary Lee

David Beckham was born in 1975 in
London, at a place called Leytonstone. When he was a young boy, his greatest
{{U}}fervency{{/U}} was in football. He played it whenever he had the chance.
Sometimes he would go and watch a game with his friends. When David Beckham was
12 years old, he won the Bobby Charlton Soccer Skills award. This was an
important step forward for this young boy, and it led him to go for a visit to a
football training camp in Spain. As a boy he played for schools of Essex and
also for his county team. In 1991, he became a trainee with
Manchester United. This meant that he could practice foot- ball as much as he
wanted to and play for the highly successful Manchester United Youth Cup team
and Under-21 team. In April, 1995 he played his first football league game
against Leeds Untied. During 1995 and 1996, David became a regular member of the
team and Manchester United won in both football seasons, with David scoring many
goals. His goals made him a household name. In the first game of
the 1996~1997 season, he scored a surprising goal from beyond the halfway line;
seeing the goalkeeper a little way out of his goal, Beckham became famous
overnight. He continued to score astonishing goals, especially from free kicks.
The speed of one of his shots was timed at 157 kph. He also had the ability to
make the ball go from left to right, or right to left, whenever he chose.
Goalkeepers were never sure where the ball was going, and it regularly ended up
in the goal.
