单选题In one very long sentence, the introduction to the United Nations Charter expresses the idea and the common aims of all the peoples whose governments joined together to form the United Nations. "We the peoples of the U. N. determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold suffering to mankind, and to reaffirm (重申) faith in fundamental rights, in the dignity (尊严) and worth of human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations (义务) arising from treaties (条约) and other sources of international law can be maintained, and to promote (促进) social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom, and for these ends to practise tolerance (宽容) and live together in peace with one another as good neighbors, and to unite our strength to maintain international peace and security, and to ensure, by the acceptance of principles and the instruction of methods, that armed force shall not be used, save in the common interest, and to employ international machinery for the promotion of economic and social advancement of all peoples have resolved to combine our efforts to accomplish these aims." The essential functions of the U. N. are to maintain international peace and security, to develop friendly relations among nations, to cooperate internationally in solving international economic, social, cultural, and human problems, promoting respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms and to be a centre for coordinating (协调) the actions in attaining these common ends. No country takes precedence (优先) over another in the U.N. Each member’s rights and obligations are the same. All must contribute to the peaceful settlement of international disputes (争端), and members have pledged (保证) to refrain from the threat or use of force against other states. Though the U.N. has no fight to intervene (干预) in any state's internal affairs, it tries to ensure that non-member states act according to its principles of international peace and security. U.N. members must offer every assistance in an approved (经核准的) U.N. action and in no way assist states against which the U.N. is taking preventive or enforcement action.

单选题Traffic in Giethoorn and the nearby Dwarsgracht still mostly travels over water. That is why it is nicknamed (绰号) "Venice of the North". Farm boats, canal boats and many other boats belonging to working people travel within the village. In the tourist season, you can hire one of about 400 so-called "whisper boats" and to use the village canal. Originally, Giethoorn was a typical peat (泥炭沼) village that exported millions of squares of peat. When the peat supply was used up, the people of Giethoorn changed over to cattle farming. Then sta- bles and storage (贮藏) barns were built behind the small peat house. The view (景色) in the village changed as all the new buildings with their thatched (用草盖成的) roofs resembles a blanket of camelhair. In those days using straw (稻草) for roofs was cheap. Now having a thatched roof is very expensive.

单选题{{B}}C{{/B}} Candlelight bathes the restaurant guests in a friendly light; the menu is about to be served. Stone guests are prepared to eat while others are looking around with nervous glances. Which knives and forks should be used first, and where should you put the napkin? For a while {{U}}table manners{{/U}} were "out". Now men and women aged 30 or so are rediscovering the finer points of being polite. Good manners give a pleasant impression. But how do you eat "properly"? The golden rule is to act silently. You should not talk to someone with your mouth full. When eating a five-course meal--a frequent event during the holiday season--guests needn't feel frightened by the variety of knives and spoons before them. You work your way towards the plate from the outside. Uncertain situations often can be mastered with common sense. For example, many unknown salad greens can be difficult to tell from one another, but you can cut them all with a knife. The napkin remains subject to special care. The correct way is to fold it in half and lay it on your lap. If you will leave your place, you should always place your napkin next to the plate. After the meal is finished, both cloth and paper napkins are folded and not thrown onto the plate. The proper table manners can also serve professional advancement. If a choice has to be made among several people for an important position, the employer may choose to lunch with them. Those who make noise with their lips certainly won't stand a chance.
