单选题C Centuries ago, mountains were thought to be the home of evil spirits, it was not until 200 years ago that men began to climb the highest peaks (山峰). At first, men climbed alone or with one or two friends. However, as men climbed higher and more dangerous mountains a team who could work together became very important. Climbing a giant mountain takes weeks and even months. The men must set up many camps as they climb upward. The climbers must take tons of supplies with them. They need food, warm clothes, and tanks of oxygen (氧气). In 1950, a team of men from England set out conquering (征服) Mt. Everest. They had to plan carefully. As yet, no man had been able to reach the top. Mt. Everest was far away from highways and railroads. Men from the neighboring country of Nepal joined the mountain-climbing party. They would help carry the needed supplies through the mountains. Each man could carry 250-pound pack. The people of Nepal had carried goods across those mountains for centuries. A helper who took packs to the highest peeks earned the name "tiger". Together, the helpers and climbers worked their way up Everest. At last, two climbers went ahead. They pushed on to the top. The highest mountain in the world had been conquered.

单选题Michele Langlois is a young Canadian who works for the police as a handwriting expert. She has helped catch many criminals by using her special skill. When she was only 14, Michele was already so interested in the differences in her school friends' handwriting that she would spend hours studying them. After finishing college she went to France for a special two-year class to learn how to analyze handwriting at the School of Police Science. On her return, she began her work for the Quebec police. Michele says that it is impossible for people to disguise their handwriting. She can discover most of what she needs to know simply by looking at the writing with her own eyes, but she also has machines that help her analyze different kinds of paper and ink. This knowledge is often of help to the police. Michele also believes that handwriting is a good sign of the kind of person the writer is. "I wouldn't go out with a fellow ff I didn't like his handwriting, "she says. But she adds that she fell in love with her future husband, William Smith, before she studied his handwriting. It later proved to be all right, however.
