单选题Excused from recycling(回收利用)because you live in a high rise with a rubbish chute (垃圾道)? You won't be for long. Miami's Mark Shantzis has made it simple for those living in tall buildings to use the chute and recycle too. In Shantzi's Hi-Rise Recycling System, a chute leads to a pie-shaped container with six boxes that can turn around when operated. The system, which fits in the same space as the chute and container now in use, enables glass, plastic, paper, and other rubbish to go into separate boxes. The system is controlled from a board fixed next to the chute door. The board has a button for each class of recycling materials (as well as for unrecyclables). At the press of a button, a microcomputer locks all other floors' chute doors and sets the recycling container turning until the right box comes under the chute. The computer also counts the loads and gives a signal by phone when the box is full. And a particular piece of equipment breaks up the nonrecyclables. Sorting(分类)recyclables before they are collected saves the use of expensive materials recovery equipment which otherwise has to do the sorting. Such equipment often makes materials very expensive, so expensive that tons of recyclables remain wasted. Shantzis believes his system could help recycled materials become more costeffective.

单选题"How far is it to the next village?" the American asks a man sitting by the side of the road. In some countries, because the man realizes that the traveler is tired and eager to get to his destination (目的地), he will politely say "Just down the road." He thinks this is more encouraging, gentler, and therefore the wanted answer. So the American drives through the night, getting more and more angry, feeling "tricked". He thinks the man deliberately (故意地) cheated him, for obviously he must have known the distance quite well. Had conditions been reversed (颠倒过来), the American would have felt he was "cheating" the driver if he had said the next town was close when he knew it was really 15 miles further on. Though, he, too, would be sympathetic (同情的) to the weary driver, he would say "You have a good way to go yet; it is at least 15 miles." The driver might be disappointed, but he would know what to expect. Whether to be accurate (准确的) or polite leads to many misunderstandings between people of different cultures. If you are aware of the situation in advance, it is sometimes easier to recognize the problem.

Manners are different from country to
country. Below are some examples of good manners in England. At
even a formal (正式的) dinner an Englishman does not wait for a toast (提议为…祝酒)
before he has a drink. The English re serve (保留) toasts for very formal or very
special occasions, such as at a wedding reception or at a party for someone who
is retiring. After a private (私人的) dinner in someone's house an Englishman will
only shake hands with the host (主人) and hostess if it is a fairly for mal
occasion, like a business dinner, and he will usually put his coat on and say
goodbye as he leaves the house. Taking one's leave varies in
other ways between China and Eng land. The time taken for saying "goodbye" after
a private dinner may seem very short to us. Yet strangely enough, English people
also often think that we Chinese end such occasions very suddenly. This is be
cause English people usually begin to show that they want to leave fir teen or
twenty minutes before they actually do by saying things two or three times like,
"We' ll have to be going soon. Our baby-sitter has to be home by
11:30." A host does not show his guest around his house unless
there is a special reason for doing so. Usually he Just shows him where to "wash
his hands". Men often walk on the outside of the pavement when
they are with a woman because woman' s dress might have been spoilt by mud
splashed up by a carriage in the street. Men also stand up when a woman enters a
room, especially in more formal situations.

单选题Reading is not the only way to gain knowledge of the work in the past. There is another large reservoir (知识库) which may be called experience, and the college student will find that every craftsman (工匠) has something he can teach and will generally teach gladly to any college student who does not look down upon them . The information from them differs from (不同于) that in textbooks and papers chiefly in that its theoretical (理论的) part — the explanations of why things happen — is frequently quite fantastic (神奇的) . But the demonstration (示范) and report of what happens , and how it happens are correct even if the reports are in completely unscientific terms (术语). Presently the college student will learn, in this case also, what to accept and what to reject. One important thing for a college student to remember is that if Aristotle could talk to the fisherman, so can he.
Another source of knowledge is the vast store of traditional (传统的) practices handed down from father to son , or mother to daughter, of old country customs (习惯), of folklore (风俗). All this is very difficult for a college student to examine, for much knowledge and personal experience is needed here to separate good plants from wild grass. The college student should learn to realize and remember how much of real value science has found in this wide, confused wilderness and how often scientific discoveries of what had existed in this area long age.
单选题People have always wondered about these pictures inside their heads. But dreams come only with sleep. It has been hard to find out more about them. People have tried to make their dreams work for them. Some people have thought dreams were a way into the past. Others have seen dreams as a path to follow. Some have even thought dreams could help the sick. Dreams start when the" inner mind" is opened. This is the place where memories are stored. Often dreams are hard to understand. This is because the inner mind sometimes uses symbols. Symbols are words or pictures that stand for something else. Most symbols stand for things that have just happened. They can also stand for thing that happened a long time ago. By using symbols, the inner mind can show people things in dream5 that they did not know about themselves. The symbol is another way of showing what really happened. Dreams have close ties with sleep. People sleep 33 percent of their lives. This is called sleep time. People dream during 25 percent of sleep time. While they are sleeping, people "tune out" the things around them. But when they dream, people may seem to sense the same things they de when they are awake. They may sometimes see, hear, taste, smell, and feel things in their dreams. These things often seem as real to people when they are asleep as when they are awake. Even though sleeping people seem to be resting, their bodies are working. Scientists have found that the eyes of sleeping people are moving. They have also found out that their brains are sending out waves.
