单选题Ann Curry is a famous news presenter of the NBC News "Today" show. When she was 15 she happened to walk into a bookstore in her hometown and began looking at the books on the shelves. The man behind the counter, Mac McCarley, asked if she'd like a job. She needed to start saving for college, so she said yes. Ann worked after school and during summer vacations, and the job helped pay for her first year of college. During college she would do many other jobs: she served coffee in the student union, was a hotel maid and even made maps for the US Forest Service. But selling books was one of the most satisfying jobs. One day a woman came into the bookstore and asked Ann for books on cancer(癌症). The woman seemed anxious. Ann showed her practically everything they had and found other books they could order. The woman left the store less worried, and Ann has always remembered the pride she felt in having helped her customer. Years later, as a television reporter in Los Angeles, Ann heard about a child who was born with problems with his fingers and his hand. His family could not afford a surgical(外科的) operation, and the boy lived in shame, hiding his hand in his pocket all the time. Ann persuaded her boss to let her do the story. After the story was broadcast, a doctor and a nurse called, offering to perform the surgical operation for free. Ann visited the boy in the recovery room after the operation. The first thing he did was to hold up his repaired hand and say, "Thank you. " What a sweet sense of satisfaction Ann Curry felt! At McCarley's bookstore, Ann always sensed she was working for the customers, not the store. Today it's the same. NBC News pays her, but she feels as if she works for the people who watch the programmes, helping them make sense of the world.

单选题Good afternoon. This is your captain speaking. We have been warned of the danger of disorderly strong air flow ahead for the next forty miles or so. Passengers are therefore strongly asked to remain in their seats with their seat belt on for their safety and not to use the restrooms during that dangerous period, if at all possible. During the time young children should be firmly fastened into their seats. Please take these preventative measures until the seat belt warning sign has gone off. Tea will be served after we have passed through the air blow.

单选题It was a really tiring day. I was about to sleep when someone gave me a call. On the other side, a strange farmer was speaking. The man was always the focus of people's conversation. However, I had never known him before. His voice sounded very nervous and he had been talking for several minutes before I began to understand something. Even then what I could figure out was that someone called Jane had suffered from a very severe accident. It was snowing heavily and I couldn't figure out the direction. I was driving for about an hour. Then I found his house at last. He was just standing there, waiting for my arrival. It seemed to me that Jane had passed away. "To me, she meant a lot even more than my own wife!" he said with tears. From his face, I could see he was rather sad. At that time I thought something terrible had happened, a possible scandal maybe. When he told me that he had placed her in the barn (厩) , I was quite shocked. "I couldn't leave her in such terrible weather!" he said. Apparently Jane had been his secret lover. I was on the point of telling him he could not ask me to cover anything up when he pushed the barn door, He lit his candle and then I saw a dark and big figure. "She was such a good cow that I won't allow anyone except a doctor to touch her!" he said, and burst out crying again.

单选题American doctors say mothers who smoke cigarettes may slow the growth of their children' s lungs (肺). They said reduced lung growth could cause the children to suffer breathing problems and lung diseases (疾病) later in life. Doctors studied more than 1 100 children between the ages of five and nine. The mothers of some of the children smoked; the other mothers did not. Doctors tested the children once a year for five years to see how fast their lungs were growing. The test measured the amount of air the children could blow out of their lungs in one second. Children should be able to blow out more air each year because their lung-power increases as their lungs develop. But the doctors found that the lungs of the children whose mothers smoked had not developed as fast as they should. Doctors are not sure when the mothers' smoking affected (影响) the children's lungs. They say it could have happened before birth because the mothers smoked during pregnancy (怀孕) or it could have happened later when the children breathed smoke-filled air at home. Doctors also are not sure if reduced lung growth will affect the children' s health when they have grown up. But they do know that children whose mothers smoked developed 20% more colds, flu (流感) and other breathing diseases than other children. So doctors feel there is a greater danger that such children will develop serious lung and breathing diseases later in life. Another recent study found that smokers have a greater chance of developing lung cancer (癌症,肿瘤) if their mothers smoked. That study found that the danger of lung cancer increased only for sons and .not for daughters. And it found that father's smoking did not affect a person's chances of developing lung cancer.

单选题As more women in the United States are working now, more are finding it necessary to make business trips alone. Since this is still new for many, some tips are certainly in order. If you are married, it is a good idea to encourage your husband and children to learn to cook a few simple meals while you are away. They will be much happier and probably they will enjoy the experience. If you will be eating alone a good deal, choose good restaurants. In the end, they will be much better for your digestion (消化). You may also find it useful to call the restaurant in advance and state that you will be eating alone. You will probably get better service and almost certainly a better table. Finally, and most importantly, get fully prepared what you will need in your travel as a businesswoman; this starts with lightweight luggage which you can easily carry even when fully packed. Take a folding case inside your suitcase; it will be very useful for dirty clothes, as well as for business documents and papers you no longer need on the trip. And make sure you have a briefcase ( 公文箱) so that you can keep the papers you need separate. Obviously, experience helps, but you can make things easier by yourself from the first by careful planning, so that right from the start you really can have a good trip.
