单选题In sports the sexes are separate. (36) and men do not run or swim in the same races. Women are less strong than men. That (37) is (38) people say. Women are (39) "the weaker sex", or if men want to please them, "the fair sex". But boys and girls are taught (40) schools and universities. There are women (41) are famous prime ministers, scientists and writers. And women live longer than mere (42) European woman can expect (43) until the age of 74;a man only until he is 68. Are women's bodies really weaker? The fastest men can run a mile in (44) 4 minutes. The best women need 5 minutes. Women's times are always slower than (45) , but some facts are a surprise. Some of the (46) women swimmers today are girls. One of them swam 400 metres (47) 4 minutes and 21.2 seconds when she was only 16. The first "Tartan" in films (48) an Olympic swimmer, Johnny Weissmuller. His fastest 400 meters was 4 minutes and 59.1 seconds, (49) is 37.9 seconds (50) than a girl 50 years (51) ! At the Olympics a doctor has to check (55) the women are really women or not. It seems like that sport has many problems. Life can be very complicated when there are more than two separate sexes.

单选题 There is a widespread belief that people who get on in life may be successful not because they deserve (应得) it, but because of influential (有影响力的) friends or the right background. Sometimes it is quite harmless, while at the other extreme it can be very harmful. I once met a brilliant (有才能的) young engineer who worked in a chemical plant. Because of her knowledge and experience, she should have been promoted (提升) to Production Manager. Instead, the job went to a man who was totally unsuited for the position. Everyone knew that he only got it because he was politically acceptable to his leaders. This discouraged the young engineer and many other workmen. All the same, we should not be pessimistic (悲观的). More and more, the modern world depends on having people who are in the job because they are good enough, not just because their face fits. There is a story of a factory owner who sent for an engineer to see to a machine, which would not work. He examined it, then took out a hammer and tapped it once. The machine started up right away. When he presented his bill, the owner {{U}}protested{{/U}}, "This can't be right! $100 just for tapping a machine with a hammer?" The engineer wrote out a new bill: "For tapping a machine, $1; for knowing where to tap it, $99."

单选题Maybe 10 years old Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father, "But, Dad, you can"t be healthy if you are dead." Dad, in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run, had forgotten to wear his safety belt—a mistake 75% of the US population make every day. The big question is why. There have been many myths about safety belts since their first appearance in cars some forty years ago. The following are three of the most common. Myth Number One: It"s best to be "thrown clear" of a serious accident. Truth: Sorry, but any accident serious enough to "throw you clear" is also going to be serious enough to given you a very bad landing, and chances are you"ll have travelled through a windshield or door to do it. Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twenty- five times greater in cases where people are "thrown clear". Myth Number Two: Safety belts "trap" people in cars that are burning or sinking in water. Truth: Sorry again, but studies show that people knocked unconscious for not wearing safety belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents. People wearing safety belts are usually protected to the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situations, not to be trapped in them. Myth Number Three: Safety belts aren"t needed at a speed of less than 30 miles per hour (mph). Truth: When two cars travelling at 30 mph hit each other, an unbelted driver would meet the windshield with a force head first into the ground from a height of 10 meters.

单选题Some people believe that mental acts such as thinking are not done in the brain alone, but that one"s muscles also join them. It may be said that we think with our muscles in somewhat the same way that we listen to music with our bodies. You surely are not surprised to be told that you usually listen to music not only with your ears but with your whole body. Few people can listen to music that is well-known to them without moving their body or some part of their body. Often when one listens to a concert on the radio, he tries to direct the players even though he knows there is a conductor on the job. Strange as this act may be, there is a very good reason for it. One cannot get all possible enjoyment from music unless he joins in playing. The listener "feels" himself into the music with more or less pronounced movements of his body. The muscles of the body actually join in the mental act of thinking in the same way, but this joining is less obvious because it is less pronounced.
