单选题Tears are nature"s way to make us feel comfortable. When our eyes are made uncomfortable by some small pieces of pollution, or when we are cutting onions, or when we are tired and become" red-eyes" because of working for a long time, tears form in our eyes to clean and refresh them. Tears are also a sign of strong emotion. We cry when we are sad and we cry when we are happy. And tears seem to be uniquely (唯一) human. We know that animals also have emotion—fear, pleasure, loneliness—but they do not shed (流) tears. From this we can conclude that tears are closely related to the emotional and biological character of human. Biologically speaking, tears are actually drops of saline fluid, which is a little bit salty (咸的), produced by a gland (腺) in the body. Because salt is an important part, tears may actually be the strongest evidence that the human is the end product of a long evolutionary process that began in the sea. And it is clear that, the shedding of tears has a specific biological function, besides the emotional benefits (好处). Through tears, we can eliminate from our body certain chemicals which appear because of stress and create a chemical imbalance in the body. Crying actually makes us feel better by correcting that imbalance and making us feel good again.

单选题 Thurgood Marshall is one of the most well-known individuals in the history of the civil rights movement in America. He was born on July 2, 1908 in Baltimore, Maryland, to a dining room steward and a school teacher. He was not born to wealthy parents. His education began in the public schools in Baltimore and he attended college at Lincoln University. After graduation from college, he entered Howard University Law School and graduated with honors at the age of twenty-five. Marshall began his law career in Baltimore and represented the poor and the weak in legal matters. The NAACP became aware of his legal abilities and asked him to join their staff. Marshall won thirty-two of the thirty-five cases he argued before the Supreme Court during the time he worked with the NAACP. In 1961, he became a member of the United States Second Court of Appeals. Four years later, he was appointed Solicitor General and was the first black to hold this position in the history of United States. Finally, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States in 1967 and was the first black to be appointed to the highest court in the United States. Marshall served in this position until his retirement in 1991. He died at the age of 84. Thurgood Marshall will be remembered for his involvement in the civil rights movement and for paving the way for much of the progress in civil rights. His dedication to the understanding and defense of the United States Constitution has touched all of our lives in so many ways.

单选题I came to India a year ago to find a village in which I could live and write, but it was many months before I settled down. I wasted a lot of time looking for the "typical" village. Yet no such thing exists. Often the villagers themselves were puzzled. Why had I come? I had put aside my work as a newspaper reporter because my ideas had changed. I had come to believe that what was happening in the developing countries was more important than anything else. But to understand how three-quarters of the world's people live, and how their future might affect ours, I felt that I first had to try and share their way of life. In the end I chose a mountain village because it was a little cooler than those in the plains. I took the bus from town along a rough road. Then came a rough walk down a path to the river. After this I began the climb into the hills. Every time I stopped to catch my breath, there was a wonderful sight. After several hours' walk the village was in sight.

单选题People all over the world know Wimbledon as the centre of lawn tennis. In 1874 it was a country village, but it was the home of the All England Croquet Club. The Club had been there since 1864. A lot of people played croquet in England at that time and enjoyed it, but the national championships did not attract many people. So the Club had very little money. "This new game of lawn tennis seems to have plenty of action (精彩场面), and people like watching it," they thought. "Shall we allow people to play lawn tennis on some of our beautiful croquet lawns?" In 1877, Wimbledon held the first world lawn tennis championships (men's singles). Wimbledon grew. There was some surprise and doubt, of course, when the Club allowed women to play in the first women's singles championship in 1884. But the ladies played well--even in long skirts that hid their legs and feet. Until 1907 the winners, both men anti women, were always British, but since 1936 the victory has usually gone to an American or an Australian. British people were very happy when an English girl, Ann Jones, won the championship in 1969.

单选题Top officials from the Ministry of Education announced last week that they will make a standard plan to calculate the education costs of university students. Aimed at stopping colleges from overcharging students, the plan has been welcomed by the public and the press. "The late announcement should be congratulated", said an opinion from newspapers. "In the past, university students" education costs have always been an enigma(谜)" "It is known that many universities are overstaffed, which brought about lots of administrative spending." "It is obviously unreasonable to include such outlays (costs) into students" education costs. Also, most of the universities are excessively keen on campus expansion, even beyond their eeonomie capability." "According to a blue paper presented by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China"s institutes of higher learning have so far borrowed a total of 150 to 200 billion yuan in loans from banks." "Will such a large sum of debt be taken for students" education expenses?" "Even if education costs are accurately calculated, another problem emerges: How to share them between government and individuals?" "According to Yuan Guiren, minister of education, the proportion(比例) shouldered by an individual student should be kept within 25 percent." "However, the sharp increase of tuition fees over the past two years indicates the proportion has not been strictly implemented. It is estimated that university students" pays are half of their education costs".

单选题Both the knowledge and experience of bright children are enriching, They are seldom held back by mixed-ability teaching. Streaming (按能力分班) pupils has many disadvantages. The child who is not so bright will feel discouraged if they are at the bottom of the grade. Since intelligence is only one aspect of children's ability, thus it is not rational to grade them just according to it. Developing the pupils' entire abilities is a better choice. It has been found that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all aspects of learning. Different ways have been applied in the classrooms. The pupils are often asked to work in groups, which gives them the opportunity to learn how to cooperate with others, to share different views, and to develop the leadership skills. They also learn how to deal with personal problems. Pupils not only learn from the teacher but also learn from each other by working in pairs and on individual tasks. They have some formal class teaching as well when it is suitable. Pupils are encouraged to use the school library, They are taught the skills which they need so that they can do this efficiently. The advanced pupil can do advanced work. No matter what age the children are, they are expected to do their best. They have been given every encouragement to obtain the goal.
