单选题We are beginning to get more and more fed up with the "holiday by the sea". We always used to go to the south coast regularly for a fortnight every summer. So we decided we"d better have some sort of a winter holiday. Some friends of ours told us we might not enjoy a skiing holiday, that it was always so cold you had to go skiing just to keep warm. We only had eight days instead of our normal fortnight away. All together, with the return flight, accommodation (住宿), etc, it came to about $135 for the three of us. And it was worth every penny, I mean. I work hard all the year round. I need a complete change and I"m willing to pay for it. I"d certainly recommend a holiday like this to anyone. We saved up for it, by the way ,by cutting down on luxuries.

Reading is not the only way to gain
knowledge of the work in the past. There is another large. reservoir which may
be called experience, and the college students will find, that every craftsman
(工匠) has something he can teach and will generally teach gladly any college
student who does not look down upon them. The information from them differs from
that in textbooks and papers chiefly in that its theoretical part—the
explanations of why things happen, is frequently quite fantastic. But the
demonstration (示范) and report of what happens, and how it happens are correct
even if the reports are in completely unscientific terms. Presently the college
students will learn, in this case also, what to accept and what to reject. One
important thing for a college student to remember is that if Aristotle could
talk to the fisherman, so can he. Another source of knowledge is
the vast store of traditional practices handed down from father to son, or
mother to daughter, of old country customs, of folklore (风俗). All this is very
difficult for a college student to examine, for much knowledge and personal
experience is needed here to separate good plants from wild grass. The college
students should learn to realize and remember how much of real value science has
found in this wide and confused wilderness and how long scientific discoveries
of what had existed in this area long.

单选题A soap is a popular television drama serial(连续剧) about the daily lives and problems of a group of people. The stories make TV viewers laugh, cry and wait to see what happens next. Thus, viewers would come.
For some soap fans, it is like the end of the world when "Another World" ends after 35-year run. That"s because soaps these days can"t satisfy devoted viewers. Altogether, daily viewers have decreased from 69.6 million to 48.8 million since 1991. For instance, ABC"s "All My Children" drew 8.3 million in 1991, now 4.5 million.
One reason is that soaps are difficult in an era marked by various electronic games. Girls who used to watch daytime dramas with their mothers now go to their rooms where they can watch cable on their own TV set, or play video games, or wander on the Internet. Besides, the audience was too old, at 47 on average(平均). TV stations have to get the right viewers because women, from 18 to 49, have the income to buy the things pushed by advertisers. It"s gotten to the point where it"s financially (经济上) driven.
But networks aren"t about to drop soaps, as long as advertisers like them so much. It"s very efficient and cheap to add heavily a number of ads. On the other hand, there"s not much to replace them. Talk and other shows have a bad record, and they don"t reach a concentrated female audience. The channels believe that they will attract younger viewers, the next generation(一代人) of soap watchers, by starring new characters and putting in fresh blood into the plot (情节) lines. There is no secret. People want a good story.

单选题Someone might set fire to a building for the insurance money, or to hurt one particular person. Arson (纵火) is a serious crime. And when a case exists, computers can help to find out who does it.
In a case in America, an arsonist (纵火犯) had been setting fire to several garages for eight months continually. It was not that the police had no trace to follow—they had received hundreds of pieces of secret information about the crime. They didn"t know where to begin.
First the police created a file of the arsonist. They decided the places of all his fires on a computer map. The computer decided by postal code and neighborhood where the criminal most likely lived. One piece of information many people had given the police was that a dark blue van was seen in the areas around the time of the fires. Going to the computer database of vans, cars, buses records, the police pulled out the names and addresses of all owners of dark blue vans who were living in the neighborhood. By comparing the postal codes with the addresses of the blue van owners, the police came up with a short list of suspects (嫌疑犯).
One of the van owners seemed uncomfortable when the police questioned him. Inside his van, the police found gas and rags. They had much to do with the arson. The man was arrested.
单选题Computer programmer Brendan Tammy earned &55000 a year by designing new computer games, yet he cannot find a bank prepared to let him have a check card. Instead, he has been told to wait another two years until he is 18. He works for a small company in Liverpool, where most young people of his age are looking for jobs. Brendan's biggest headache is how to use his money. Though he has high payment, he cannot drive a car, or get credit cards. Brendan got his job four months ago, a year after leaving school with six Olive's(普通成绩)and working for a time in a computer shop. "I got the job because the people who run the company knew I had already written some programs. " he said. "I suppose 55000 pounds sounds a lot but I hope it will come to more than that this year. "He spends some of his money on records and clothes, and gives his mother 20 pounds a week as he lives with his parents. But most of his spare time is spent working. "Unfortunately, computing was not part of our studies at school," he said. "But I had been studying it in books and magazines for four years in my spare time. I knew what I wanted to do and never considered staying on at school. Most people in this business are fairly young, anyway. I would like to earn a million and I suppose early retirement (退休)is a possibility. You never know when the market might disappear. /

单选题Kristy, 28, a cook in La Cross, often wondered what she"d do in a life-threatening situation. On August 29, 1997, she got her answer. While she was driving on a road, a big truck hit its head on a pick-up car (敞篷小货车). The pick-up burst into flames. Kristy rushed out and ran to the pick-up. Two farmers, Dean Bernhard, 51, and his brother Donald, 44, were inside. When she got close, Kristy could see the unconscious driver. The other man was under the passenger seat. Says Kristy, "The smells were sickening (令人作呕的). I was afraid the truck would blow up and kill us all."
The driver of the big truck was struggling to open the passenger door, so Kristy rushed to the driver"s side. Finally they opened the door. She reached in, seized the driver and, to her horror, felt her hands sink into his chest. She quickly dragged the man to safety on the roadside, then hurried back. As Kristy stared down the ditch with the passenger, the pick-up blew up. She jumped on top of him and they both rolled to safety.
When the police arrived a while later, Kristy started crying, "I want my mum." In fact she cried for the next three months. Today, the two farmers, each the father of two children, are good friends with Kristy. To show their deep appreciation, they bought her a ring with nine diamonds—one for each member of their immediate families, and the ninth for her.
