单选题Hotlines have become common in China. Some radio broadcasting stations use hotlines to encourage the listeners to take part in the talk shows.
That"s a good idea. Yet, the fact is, some people do nothing but break the whole program.
Some people know little about the topic under discussion. Sometimes they do not even know what the host is talking about. So the host has to tell the caller what the show is about. Usually the caller will ask a few questions which express his hope and show his ignorance (无知). Then the host has to answer and explain—how silly this is! It wastes a lot of time.
It seems that some people phone the hotlines for fun. They just want to let the listeners hear them. They don"t care what the topic is, whether they themselves are interested in or how silly they appear to be.
I"m totally bored by those people. It"s necessary for radio stations to improve the hotline programs. In my opinion, if a caller doesn"t know what is going on, the operator should not let the caller take part in it.

Many people are worried about what
television has done to the generation of American children who have grown up
watching it. For one thing, recent studies show that TV weakens the ability to
imagine. Some teachers feel that television has taken away the child's ability
to form mental pictures in his own mind, resulting in children who cannot
understand a simple story without pictures. Secondly, too much TV too early
usually causes children to be removed from real-life experiences. Thus, they
grow up to be passive watchers who can only respond to action, but not start
doing something actively. The third area for such a worrying situation is the
serious dissatisfaction frequently expressed by school teachers that children
show a low patience for the pains in learning. Because they have been used to
seeing results of all problems in 30 or 60 minutes on TV, they are quickly
discouraged by any activity that promises less than immediate satisfaction. But
perhaps the most serious result is the TV effect of bloody fights and death on
children, who have come to believe that it is an everyday thing. Not only does
this increase their admission of terrible acts on others, but some children will
follow anti-social acts that they see on
television.

单选题Businessmen know that people choose products by color. Businessmen want to make products in the colors people will buy. For example, a car-maker needs to know how many cars to paint red, how many green and how many orange. Good businessmen know that young people prefer different colors than old people do and men prefer different colors than women do.
Young children react to the color of an object before they react to its shape. They prefer the warm colors—red, yellow and orange. When people grow older, they begin to react more to the shape of an object than to its color. The favorite color of adults of all countries is blue. Their second favorite color is red, and their third is green.
On the whole, women prefer brighter colors than men do. Almost everyone likes red, but women like yellow and green more than men do. Pink is usually considered as women"s color. Blue is usually considered as men"s color. As a result, people dress baby girls in pink and baby boys in blue. However, the taste of people changes. For example, years ago businessmen wore only white shirts; today they wear many different colors, including pink.
单选题Last April, on a visit to the new Mall of America near Minneapolis, I carried with me a small book provided for the reporters by the public relations office. It included a variety of "fun facts" about the mall, such as: 140,000 hot dogs am sold each week, there are 10,000 full-time jobs, 44 sets of moving stairs and 17 lifts, 12,750 parking places, 13,000 tons of steel, and $ I million is drawn weekly from 8 ATMs. Opened in the summer of 1992, the mall was built where the former Minneapolis Stadium had been. It was only a five-minute drive from Minneapolis to St. Paul International Airport. With 4.2 million square feet of floor space--22 times the size of the average American shopping center--the Mall of America was the largest shopping and family recreation center under one roof in the United States. I knew already that the Mall of America had been imagined by its designers, not merely as a marketplace, but as a national tourist attraction. Eleven thousand articles, the small book informed me, had been written about the mall. Four hundred trees had been planted in its gardens, $625 million had been spent to build it, and 350 stores were already in business. Three thousand bus tours were expected each year along with a half-million Canadian visitors and 200,000 Japanese tourists. Sales were expected to be at $650 million for 1993 and at $1 billion for 1996. Pop singers and film stars such as Janet Jackson and Arnold Schwarzenegger had visited the mall. It was five times larger than Red Square and it included 2.3 miles of hallways and used almost twice as much steel as the Eiffel Tower. It was also home to the nation's largest indoor park, called Knott's Camp Snoopy.

A library is a building for a
collection of books, magazines, periodicals and newspapers. The books are kept
on the shelves in the stack room whereas (但是,尽管) the magazines, journals, etc.
in the reading room. Modern libraries also have Xerox (静电复印) rooms and
audio-visual (视听) rooms. If you want to borrow books, you can go to the loan
(借出) desk, look over the correct numbers in the card catalog (目录) and ask the
librarian to take them out for you. Or you're allowed to enter the stack room to
find the books for yourself. If the library doesn't keep the magazine which
carries the article you want, you can borrow the magazine from the other
libraries by means of interlibrary loan service. Don't forget to show your
library card or I.D. card to the librarian before you go into the reading room,
where you can read magazines or newspapers. If you find a good article and want
to keep it, you can have it duplicated in the Xerox room. Be- sides, if you want
to watch films or slides, you can ask the projectionist to play the videotape
for you in the audio-visual room, where you can also listen to language tapes
and music tapes.
