单选题What's your idea of a good time? What about dancing in a rainy field with one hundred and fifty thousand other people while a famous rock band plays on a stage so far away that the performers look like ants? It may sound strange but that is what many hundreds of thousands of young people in the UK do every summer. Why? Because summer is the time for outdoor music festivals. Held on a farm, the Glastonbury Festival is the most well-known and popular in the UK. It began in 1970 and was attended by one thousand five hundred people each paying an admission price of £ 1 -- the ticket included free milk from the farm. Since then the Glastonbury Festival has gone from strength to strength--in 2004 one hundred and fifty thousand fans attended, paying £ 112 for tickets to the three-day event. Tickets for the event sold out within three hours. Acts included veteran (老的、著名的) superstars, such as Paul McCartney and James Brown, as well as new talents, like Franz Ferdinand and Joss Stone. Although many summer festivals are run on a profit-making basis, Glastonbury is a charity event, donating millions of pounds to local and international charities (慈善事业). Glastonbury is not unique in using live music to raise money for global poverty. In July of this year, the Live 8 concerts were held simultaneously (同时) in London, Pads, Rome and Berlin. Superstars, such as Madonna, Sir Elton John and Stevie Wonder performed in order to highlight international poverty and debt.

单选题Forces other than damaging winds are also at work inside tornadoes. Sometimes, as the twisting funnel passes over a house, the walls and ceiling burst apart as if a bomb had gone off inside. This explosion is caused by the low air pressure at the center of a tornado. The pressure at the center of a tornado is usually 13 pounds per square inch. However, inside the house the air pressure is normal, a bout 15 pounds per square inch. The difference of 2 pounds per square inch between the inside and outside pressure may not seem like much. But suppose a tornado funnel passes over a small building that measures 20 by 10 feet. On each square inch of the building, there is 2 pounds of pressure from the inside that is not balanced by air pres sure outside the building. On the ceiling, that adds up to an unbalanced pressure of 57 600 pounds. The pressure on the four walls adds up to 172 800 pounds. If windows are open in the building, some of the inside air will rush out through them. This will balance the pressure inside and out side the building. But if the windows are shut tightly, the enormous inside pressure may cause the building to burst. Unfortunately, heavy rain and hail often occur in thunderstorms that later produce tornadoes. So people frequently shut all windows to protect their property. This may cause far worse damage later. For the same reason, tornado cellars must have an air vent. Otherwise, the cellar door might be blown out when a tornado passes over it.
单选题As a result of pollution, Lake Erie, on the borders of the U. S. A. and Canada, now does not have many living things. Pollution in water is not simply a matter of "poisons" killing large numbers of fish overnight. Very often the effects of pollution are not noticed until many months or years later because the first organisms (生物) to be affected are either plants or planktons (浮游生物). These organisms are the food of fish, birds, and other creatures. When this food disappears, the fish and birds would die too. In this way a whole food chain can be wiped out, and it is not until dead fish and water birds are found at the river's edge or on the sea shore that people realize what is happening. Where do the substances that pollute the water come from? There are two main sources, sewage (生活污水) and industrial waste. As more detergent (洗涤剂) is used in the homes, more of it is finally put into our rivers, lakes and seas. Detergent harms water birds by breaking down the natural substances which keep their feathers waterproof. Sewage itself, if not properly treated, makes the water dirty and prevents all forms of life in rivers and the sea from receiving the oxygen they need. Industrial waste is even more harmful since there are more highly poisonous materials in it, such as copper and lead. So, if we want to stop this pollution, the answer is simple. Sewage and industrial waste must be made clean before flowing into rivers and seas. It may be already too late to save some rivers and lakes, but others can be saved if the correct action is taken at once.
