But Baker said he was fifty yards(码) away. Then Mr. Baker's wife explained about the hole in the middle. She said, "Baker went to a shop and bought a very big piece of wood. 单选题Today, in many high schools, teaching is now a technical miracle of computer labs, digital cameras, DVD players and laptops. Teachers e-mail parents, post messages for students on online bulletin boards, and take attendance with a quick movement of a mouse. Even though we are now living in the digital age, the basic and most important element of education — the human connection — has not changed. Most students still need that one-on-one, teacher-student relationship to learn and to succeed. Teenagers need instruction in English, math or history, but they also want personal advice and encouragement. Kids talk with me about their families, their weekend plans, their favorite TV shows and their relationship problems. In my English and journalism classes, we talk about Shakespeare and persuasive essays, but we also discuss college basketball and career choices. Students show me pictures of their rebuilt cars, their family vacations, and their newborn baby brothers. This personal connection is the vital link between teacher and student that no amount of technology can improve upon or replace. A few years ago I had a student in sophomore English who was struggling with my class and with school in general. Although he was a humorous young man who liked to joke around, I knew his family life was far from ideal. Whenever I approached him about missing homework or low test grades, he always had the same reply: "It doesn't matter because I'm quitting school anyway. " Even though he always said this in a half-teasing way, I knew he needed to hear my protests and my "value of a high school education" lecture. He needed to hear this speech from me because I understood his family problems and he knew that I believed in him. After he left my class, he struggled through the next two years of school. But, he did finally graduate because we kept telling him to hang in there. We'd cared about him finishing school. Students rely on compassionate teachers to guide, to tutor, to listen, to laugh and to cry with them. Teachers provide the most important link in the educational process — the human one.

单选题You have been at Furnell University for two weeks now. As usual, you need enough time to sleep and eat. You also want to spend time with your new friends and get some exercise. But, after the first two weeks of classes, you have probably concluded that there isn' t enough time to do all these things, because you also have to attend classes, go to labs, do assignments and write papers. Soon you will be in a situation like this one: You are going to have a quiz in your ten o' clock class. You studied for it until 2 a.m. You also have an eight o' clock class. Should you sleep late and skip the eight o' clock class? To some extent the answer depends on the professor of the course. Some instructors announce that they require attendance. In that case you really should go to class. Some don' t say anything. In that case you have to decide. Once in a while it is better to stay in bed and sleep than to get so tired that you cannot think. However, it is not a good idea to skip class more than a few times. If you have to skip a class, ask another student for the class notes, announcements and the assignments. Also, come to the next class prepared. If you miss a class because you are sick, tell the instructor afterward. He or she may let you make up the work. If you have an important appointment, tell the instructor about it before you miss the class. Here is another common problem. You took the quiz. Even after studying very hard, you could not answer all the questions. In high school you always got every answer right. What went wrong? Nothing. High school work is easy, so a good student is supposed to get a perfect score. In college the teacher wants to challenge even the best students. Therefore, almost nobody answers every question correctly. But maybe there were some very basic ideas in that course you did not understand. Go and see the teacher during his or her office hours. Most teachers will gladly explain things again. Of course, they will not be pleased to repeat what they said in class to someone who skipped the class. Maybe you really should get up for that eight o' clock class!
单选题In some ways the employment interview is like a persuasive speech because the applicant (interviewee) seeks to persuade the employer (interviewer) to employ him or her. Several suggestions might prove helpful to the applicant as preparation is made for the actual interview.
A job applicant has the responsibility for ascertaining certain types of information prior to the interview. First, the applicant should know what kind of job he wants and how that job relates to his career objective. It is important that the applicant be able to state his reasons for wishing to work for a particular company. Second, the applicant should seek as much information as possible concerning the company. Relevant information for the applicant to locate includes such items as the location of the home and regional offices, the financial status of the company, plans for expansion, and company philosophy. Information about most major corporations is available in reference books and periodicals.
After gathering information concerning the company, the applicant is ready for the interview. The interviewer"s first impression comes from the interviewee"s appearance. For most interviews, appropriate dress for men is a conservative dark colored suit with a long-sleeve white or light blue shirt and conservative tie. For women a conservative, tailored suit or dress is appropriate. Both men and women should have neat, conservative-length hair.
Although hairstyle and dress are matters of personal taste, many personnel directors form initial impressions from these characteristics. For example, one recent college graduate, who felt himself qualified, was interviewed for a public relations job. However, the personnel manager considered this young man"s long hair, sloppy dress, and overly casual manner unsuited for this particular position.
