单选题It was once thought that air pollution affected only the area immediately around large cities with factories and heavy automobile traffic. Today, we know that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is literally worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the entire eastern half of the United States and led to health warnings in rural areas away from any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile traffic. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be affected by air pollution. Some scientists feel that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels (coal and oil) is creating a "greenhouse effect"—holding in heat reflected from the earth and raising the world's average temperature. If this view is correct and the world's temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be under water. Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particular matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth's temperature — a result that would be equally disastrous. A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to a new ice age, and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. At present we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen (though one recent government report prepared by experts in the field concluded that the greenhouse effect is very likely). Perhaps, if we are very lucky, the two tendencies will offset each other and the world's temperature will stay about the same as it is now.

单选题Directions: Read the following text. Choose the best word or phrase for each numbered blank and mark A, B, C or D on ANSWER SHEET 1. Text Most young people enjoy physical activities, walking, cycling, football, or mountaineering. These who have a passion {{U}} {{U}} 1 {{/U}} {{/U}}climbing high and difficult mountains are often {{U}} {{U}} 2 {{/U}} {{/U}}with astonishment. Why are men and women {{U}} {{U}} 3 {{/U}} {{/U}}to suffer cold and hardship, and to {{U}} {{U}} 4 {{/U}} {{/U}}on high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activities {{U}} {{U}} 5 {{/U}} {{/U}}which men give their leisure. There are no man-made rules, as there are for {{U}} {{U}} 6 {{/U}} {{/U}}games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of different kinds which it would be dangerous to {{U}} {{U}} 7 {{/U}} {{/U}}, but it is this freedom from man-made rules {{U}} {{U}} 8 {{/U}} {{/U}}makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own {{U}} {{U}} 9 {{/U}} {{/U}}. If we {{U}} {{U}} 10 {{/U}} {{/U}}mountaineering with other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is {{U}} {{U}} 11 {{/U}} {{/U}}mountaineering is not a "team work". However, it is only our misunderstanding. There are, in fact, no" matches" {{U}} {{U}} 12 {{/U}} {{/U}}"teams" of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may {{U}} {{U}} 13 {{/U}} {{/U}}, obviously, there is teamwork. A mountain climber knows that he may have to fight with natural {{U}} {{U}} 14 {{/U}} {{/U}}that are stronger and more powerful than man. His sport requires high mental and {{U}} {{U}} 15 {{/U}} {{/U}}qualities. A mountain climber {{U}} {{U}} 16 {{/U}} {{/U}}to improve on skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions {{U}} {{U}} 17 {{/U}} {{/U}}in their early twenties. But it is not {{U}} {{U}} 18 {{/U}} {{/U}}for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more {{U}} {{U}} 19 {{/U}} {{/U}}than younger men, but they probably climb with more skill and less {{U}} {{U}} 20 {{/U}} {{/U}}of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.

单选题Like many of my generation, I have a weakness for hero worship. At some point, however, we all begin to question our heroes and our need for them. This leads us to ask: What is a hero? Despite immense differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics that instruct and inspire people. A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a story of adventure to tell and a community who will listen. But a hero goes beyond mere fame. Heroes serve powers or principles larger than themselves. Like high voltage transformers, heroes take the energy of higher powers and step it down so that it can be used by ordinary people. The hero lives a life worthy of imitation. Those who imitate a genuine hero experience life with new depth, enthusiasm, and meaning. A sure test for would be heroes is what or whom do they serve? What are they willing to live and die for? If the answer or evidence suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes. Madonna and Michael Jackson are famous, but who would claim that their fans find life more abundant? Heroes are catalysts (催化剂) for change. They have a vision from the mountaintop. They have the skill and the charm to move the masses. They create new possibilities. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of the British Empire. Without Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr., we might still have segregated (隔离的) buses, restaurants, and parks. It may be possible for large scale change to occur without leaders with magnetic personalities, but the pace of change would be slow, the vision uncertain, and the committee meetings endless.

单选题At the European Commission in Brussels, they have a joke about the work interpreters do— "Languages", they say, "have nothing to do with interpretation, it helps to know them. "Anyone thinking of becoming an interpreter would bear this so well in mind. Translating languages, especially in a political context, involves far more than mere linguistic ability. To work in an international organization, such as the United Nations, you need to be approved by one of the various international translators or 'interpreters' associations. To achieve this, you must experience rigorous and lengthy training, either at an accrediting organization's own school, or on a postgraduate course at university. But a qualification in languages is not the only route into the job. At London's University of Westminster, candidates get offered a place on the interpreter's course if they can show that they have "lived a bit", in the words of one lecture. Young people who have just left university often lack adequate experience of life. The University also looks for candidates who have lived for long time in the countries where their acquired languages are spoken. They are also expected to have wide cultural interests and a good knowledge of current affairs. This broad range of interests are essential in a job which can require interpreting discussions of disarmament(裁军) on Monday, international fishing rights on Tuesday, multinational finance on Wednesday , and the building and construction industry on Thursday. Interpreters also rely on adrenaline (肾上腺素)—which is caused by the stress and challenges of the job—to keep them going through their demanding schedules. Many admit that they enjoy the buzz of adrenaline they get from the job, and it's known that their heart rates speed up while they are working. It's also a job with its own risks and excitement. Interpreters are needed in war zones as well as in centers of international diplomacy, like the U. N.
