单选题 Text There was a time when parents who wanted an educational present for their children would buy a typewriter, a globe or an encyclopedia set (一套百科全书). Now those (26) seem hopelessly old-fashioned: this Christmas, there was a lot of (27) computers under the tree. (28) that computers are their key to success, parents are also frantically insisting that children (29) taught to use them in school--as early as possible. The problem for schools is that when it (30) computers, parents don't always know best. Many schools are (31) parental impatience and are purchasing hardware (32) sound educational planning, so they can say, "OK, we've moved into the computer age." Teachers (33) themselves caught in the middle of the problem--between parent pressure and (34) educational decisions. Educators do not even agree (35) how computers should be used. A lot of money is going for computerized educational materials (36) research has shown can be taught (37) with pencil and paper. Even those who believe that all children should (38) to computer warn of potential (39) to the very young. The temptation remains strong largely because young children (40) so well to computers. First graders have been (41) willing to work for two hours on math skills. Some have an attention span of 20 minutes. (42) school can afford to go into computing, and that creates (43) another problem: a division between the haves and have-nots. Very few parents ask (44) computer instruction in poor school districts, (45) there may be barely enough money to pay the reading teacher.

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great
many people.Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are
excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions.Worrying thoughts
are constantly occurring in their minds: "What kind of impression am I making?Do
they like me?Do I sound stupid?Am I wearing unattractive clothes?”
It is obvious that uncomfortable feelings must affect people.A person's
self- concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person
behaves affects other people's reactions. In general, the way people think about
themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.
Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily
influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing"the right
thing".Shy people are very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms their
inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by praise because they
believe they are not worthy of praise.A shy person may respond to praise with a
statement like this:"You are just saying that to make me feel good,I know it's
not true."It is clear that while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing
it is harmful. Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least
reduced?Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient
effort in building self-confidence.Since shyness goes hand in hand with lack of
self-esteem, it is important for people to accepttheir weakness as well as their
strengths. For example, most people would like to be "A"student in every
subject. It is not fair for them to label themselves inferior because they have
difficulty in some areas.People's expectations of themselves must be realistic.
Living on the impossible leads to a sense of inadequacy. Each of
us is a unique, worthwhile individual. We are interested in our own personal
ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our
potential.Let's not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling
life.
