填空题{{B}}Directions:{{/B}}{{I}} Read the texts from a magazine article in which five persons talked about their attitude to helping the people in developing countries. For question 61 to 65, match the name of each person (61 to 65) to one of the statements given below, which is the summary of his or her speech. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.{{/I}}{{B}}Jane Anderson:{{/B}} As a house wife, I have a lot to do at home. I can't play with my kids all the time. I have to go shopping, do cleaning, washing and so on. When the kids are watching TV they are quiet at least, making no trouble or being mischievous. They enjoy watching it and learn a lot from it. They can see the world through TV. They know what a lion in the wild world looks like, not the one they see in a cage in the zoo. They see how the Chinese people work and live when they are too young to travel to China. It's a good thing to have a TV at home.{{B}}Alice Woods:{{/B}} The government has just published a report which suggests that television is partly responsible for the serious increase in crime over the last ten years. The report stressed in particular the harmful effects of television on children, who are being exposed to increased violence and pornography on television. The TV companies say, "if you don't like it, turn it off." Well, by the time you realize you don't like it, it's too late to turn if off. Any way, most people are passive viewers — they don't care what they watch. The worst problem is the effect on children. They are easily influenced by TV, because they enjoy it; but they are too young to judge what is true or what is false. And so they tend to believe everything they see on TV. In fact, television programs are full of lies. If children believe that the violence and debauchery they see on TV is typical of the world, they will become indifferent to it or worse still, they will copy it.{{B}}Joe Simmonds:{{/B}} If teachers and parents taught their children that violence and crime were exciting, we'd call them irresponsible. But that's exactly what the TV companies are doing all the time. The Government report just shows the tip of the iceberg. The moral level of society is falling. Of course I blame the parents as well as TV. They use television as a cheap babysitter while they are out drinking, gambling, or having fun. Parents don't bother to teach kids what is right and what is wrong these days.{{B}}Philip Regent:{{/B}} We don't make society, we only report it. Our job is to show people's life as it really is. If we broadcast fairy stories and church sermons every night, bow many people would watch? If there is violence in society, we report it and make people be aware of such things at large. We understand Television is a powerful mass media and we try our best to make as many educational programs as possible. Yet TV is also an important way to offer entertainment. We have to give people what they want. It their taste is bad, that's not our fault.{{B}}Nancy Mead:{{/B}} I propose to establish a Television Censorship Board with powers to cancel broadcasting licenses. This Board would look into all complaints which it gets from the public and would judge programs according to a fixed standards. In each case where a program was judged to be violent or pornographic, a heavy fine would be imposed. If any companies commits five such offences in any one year, their license will be cancelled.{{B}} Now match each of the persons (61 to 65) to the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements. Statements{{/B}}A. For the harm brought to children by TV, not only the TV companies but also the parents are to blame.B. A Television Censorship Board should be established to monitor TV programs.C. TV is a tool to offer both education and entertainment.D. Television is doing harm especially to children.E. I see no harm of TV on childrenF. Some parents use TV as a cheap babysitter.G. We are not responsible for people's bad taste and we have to meet people's need in our programs.

填空题Secret 1 Your mother-in-law loves to help you--in fact, she insists on giving you the benefit of her vast experience. It's much more likely that she feels undervalued in her own life. In my opinion, she wants to help, so let her--but in a way that suits you. Give her a role she can be good at- one you don't mind giving up. For example, if she is determined to interfere in the kitchen and you hate cooking, let her bake cakes to her heart's content. Don't become possessive about roles and tasks you den' t even want, only to score a point. If you choose to allow her to help, you retain control. Ease the tension by simply asking her advice--you don't have to follow it. If she feels involved, she'll feel less compelled to thrust herself on you. Secret 2 Your mother-in-law doesn't call you names. She doesn't interfere and she doesn't offer unwanted advice. In fact, sometimes you wish she did! Your friends say she sounds like a model mother-in-law. But you know better. As she sits there in silence, you sense that she's positively burning with hostility--not least because you took her precious son away from her. If so, your best chance of making friends is to get her to see you as a person in your own right, not just the woman who stole her baby. But if this doesn't work, the golden rule here is: don't try too hard. If you known you've done your best to be friendly, you may have to settle for the fact that you are two different people, and the relationship you've got might be as good as it will ever get. Accept it, don't feel guilty--and don't waste any more time trying to make it perfect. Secret 3 You feel you're worlds apart. Maybe your husband's family is a different class or different race, have a different lifestyle or culture from yours. You and your mother-in-law rarely agree about important issues and she simply doesn't understand where you're coming from. If so, don't feel you have to judge everything by your own standards. Don't assume that your way of doing things is absolutely the right way--you might not want to be exactly like them, but we can all learn something from other people's way of life. You must know that overcoming fundamental differences in attitudes and lifestyles is never easy. Secret 4 If your mother-in-law is openly hostile to you, get this straight. Your are unlikely to change her. But you can change how you respond to her. Next time she's very rude and using offensive language towards you, show her you're no longer prepared to put up with it. That doesn't mean that, after years of saying nothing, you should suddenly scream, How dare you speak to me like that? But you can send a couple of warning shots. Every time it happens, make so abrupt excuse and leave the room, go to the toilet, find something to do in the garden, If that doesn't work, start dealing directly (but calmly) with each criticism as it arises, until she gets the message. Secret 5 Lots of women do have lovely mother-in-law. But even if you get on well, it can take time and effort to build up a really good relationship--after all, you're usually strangers to each ether for a large part of your lives, and then suddenly you become each other's family. If you get on fine at the moment, but would like to be closer, the key is to build a friendship that's between you two, and not dependent on your relationship with your husband. As well as doing things as a family, try to see her separately, too--go shopping with her, or find an interest you both share. Get to know her as a person, not just his morn. And don't forget, there's One subject she'll almost certainly enjoy talking about--and that's the man you married. Ask to see the family album and get her to talk about his childhood. She'll love you for it. Now match each of the Secrets (16 to 20) to the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements.A. Enjoy the differences if you've got nothing in common.B. Be a little more intimate if she's great.C. Compromise with her if she gets involved.D. Be friendly with her if she interferes.E. Take it easy if she doesn't like you.F. It's how you feel that's important, not how she behaves.G. Be hard on her if she's hostil

填空题Ann Scott: People who leave litter behind them are anti-social. They spoil the beauty of the countryside and create all sorts of inconveniences, and even danger for other people. Broken bottles and rusty cans cause serious injuries especially to children. Old magazines and empty packages help to start fire when fools throw away matches and cigarette butts. Why can't people be more careful? Dropping litter is a disgusting habit. If you don't do it in your oval house to keep it clean and tidy, why should you do it in public places to make them dirty and look ugly? I never drop litter and I don't allow my children to. Unfortunately, most parents these days don't bring their children up properly. It's a mother's duty to teach her children how to behavior and to set a good examples herself.Linda Mitchell: I belong to an anti-litter group. Recently we cleaned up a peach. We collected over 150 tons of garbage. We burned haft of it and we sold the rest to scrap dealers for $500. We spent that money on litter cans which we placed at regular intervals along the beach. Every local government ought to do the same thing. The problem of litter reflects a lack of responsibility on all sides. The local government has a duty to solve the problem by making use of collected garbage. The police have a duty to report people who litter public places and the courts have a duty to punish such people. Last but not least, the companies which produce throw-away products should stop using materials which can't be burned or recycled.Fred Hurst: There's not much we can do. There are a thousand square miles of countryside around this town. We cannot afford to supply a million litter cans and empty them regularly. We don't have the money and we don't have the workforce either. Why should the local town council be responsible for litter which is left by holiday visitors? Why should people be more careful not to litter, but rather collect it and put it into their home garbage bin? I do believe that it is more important to educate people to behave themselves than to complain the town council.Ret Giles: As we all know that littering is actually a crime and carries a heavy penalty. But the police are too busy preventing serious crimes to worry about litter problems. If somebody drops a ton of poisonous chemical waste in the forest, we will try to catch him, but we can't arrest anyone who leaves a few empty cans or plastic bags around after a picnic. We are policemen, not babysitters.Albert Greaves: We use to sell drinks in glass bottles and we offered a little money when empty bottles were returned to us, because we could wash them and clean them and use them again. But glass is heavy and breaks easily, and they are expensive, so we changed to plastic. It's a lot more cheaper, light, strong and unbreakable. Of course we don't collect empty bottles because it's cheaper and safer to make new ones. Empty bottles should be thrown in the litter cans, but a few untidy people don't bother. That's nothing to do with us. We are not responsible for their had habits. People should learn to be rid of bad habits and should learn to think not only of themselves but the others as well. Now match each of the persons (61 to 65 ) to the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements. Statements[A] We are involved in far more serious social problems than littering.[B] What we should do is to teach people not to litter.[C] We can't do anything, as it costs too much to treat the problem of littering.[D] We should not litter and teach our children not to too.[E] Who should be responsible for people's bad habit? At least not us.[F] Lack of responsibility of both the people and government causes the problem of littering.[G] Littering problem is not created by plastic bottles.

填空题Mr. Mike Smith: It wasn't an easy decision, but we've been asking for a decent wage for years. Now at last people are beginning to listen to us. We're only asking for a 25 percent increase in our wages. 250 dollars a week, that's all. It's a pity so many people have to be inconvenienced by our strike. But please don't blame us. Blame the government for refusing our claim. Mr. Tom Brown: It's totally unreasonable to demand so much money when we are trying desperately to control inflation. If wages go up, so do prices. If we gave in to the electricity workers, all the other unions would want more ,with the inevitable result that the crisis would become uncontrollable. What we're trying to impress upon everybody is that inflation hurts everybody, especially the poor people. We offer the electricity workers a 10 percent increase. And that's already too much. My stand at this meeting will be to persuade the Union to see reason. Mr. Bob Davis: Everybody will be hurt by this strike, including the electricity workers themselves. The economy will be destroyed and many people will lose their jobs. Already people are saying that the big unions have too much power and shouldn't be allowed to strike. Of course the electricity workers want to get more money. Don't we all? Mrs. Baker: My opinion is "Get the Army in". All the power stations should be managed by the army. The strikers should be thrown into prison. That's what this country needs. Why must we all suffer just because a few men are greedy? If they don't like their jobs, nobody's forcing them to work. They should try and live on 50 dollars a week like I have to. Perhaps they'd keep their mouths shut then. Miss Slater: Let's face it. It's neither here nor there. The electricity workers are in a strong position. Perhaps we can't do anything about it. What I say is: let them have their 250 dollars so we can return to work. I mean, the government wastes the taxpayers' money all the time on trivial things. How can anyone say 250 dollars is "too much"? Pop singers get more. Nurses get less. It's just one of those things. Statements A. A 10% increase is already too much, and I'm here to persuade the Union to see reason. B. I hope that strikes should be banned in all sectors relating to the nation's security and stability. C. We will never go back to work until our goals are achieved. D. I think that the government should give in to the electricity worker's demands. E. I strongly suggest that all the power stations should be run by the army and that the strikers should be put into prison. F. I must make you clear that strikes will destroy the economy and that many people will lose their jobs. G. We are forced to call a strike because the government rejected our wage claim.

填空题Mary: Tile quest for success always begins with a target. As baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra once said, "You got to be very careful if you don't know where you're going, because you might not get there." Too many people wander through life sleepwalkers. Each day they follow familiar routines, never asking, "What am I doing with my life? And they don't know what they're doing because they lack goals. Goal-setting is a focusing of the will to move in a certain direction. Begin with a clear conception of what you want. write down your goals and date them—putting them into words clarifies them. Rather than concentrating on objects to acquire and possess, focus on fulfilling your desires to do, to produce, to contribute—goal-setting that yields the true sense of satisfaction we all need.John: My father was 17 when he left the farm in Cameron, N. C. , and set off for Baltimore to apply for a job at the Martin Aircraft Company. When asked what he wanted to do, he said, "Everything." Whenever he went to a new department, he looked for the guys who had been around forever. These were the people notices usually avoided, afraid that next to them they'd look like the beginners they were. Whatever your goals, plan to network with those who know more than you. Model your efforts On theirs, adjusting and improving as you go.Betty: The biggest difference between people who succeed and those who don't is not usually talent but persistence. Many brilliant people give up. Who wants to run the risk of getting knocked down again and again? But highly successful people don't quit. It's often been said that they are just individuals who got up one more time than they felt down.Milke: Without a deep commitment it is difficult to pursue a dream. Great success requires risk—whether financial, social or physical. Always, emotional risk is involved. We can't play safe if we want to win in life.Hanson: Reread your list of goals now and then. If you decide one should be adjusted or replaced with a better one, make corrections. And when you have achieved your goal or made a big step towed it, celebrate. It can be anything you enjoy—to mark the moment and rekindle the vision. But it shouldn't end there. After a goal is reached many people ease up. That's why it's possible for this year's top sales agent to become next year's has been. If life is leaving you out in the cold, do something about it. Turn up the heat. Strive. It's worth it. 填空题Maguet de Icaza: Free software benefits people, countries and companies by giving them complete control of the software on which they depend. This is helping close the digital divide between developed and underdeveloped countries. People who previously might never have had access to this sort of technology are already leading the efforts to bring it to the developing world. Free software is the foundation on which a fairer future and a more efficient economy is being built.Austin Hill: Welcome to the future. Your mobile phone tracks your location, your interactive TV records your viewing habits. Privacy is to the information age what environmentalism was to the industrial age. Businesses will protect themselves, and their customers, by introducing privacy-promoting technologies and building better data controls into every aspect of their operation. A leading class of privacy protectors will emerge in every industry, and both they and their customers will reap the rewards of the ethical privacy brand.Ng Ede Phang: This will be the year that plain old text e-mail sits up and starts talking--and talking a lot. The human voice is a powerful weapon. An e-mail doesn't tell me whether you're happy, sad or excited, whereas Internet voice services provide all these key emotional characteristics. The human voice adds a very powerful element to business relationships that e-mail just cannot match.Murray Goldman: For those of us who live on airplanes, a key decision is which electronic devices to carry on a trip. The future is in the appropriate combination of communications and computing devices. Many business travelers will require the full computing power of a personal computer, with a screen large enough to do intensive work. As a result, lightweight notebooks have been introduced to the market with innovative options such as built-in DVDs, cameras and wireless capabilities.Christine Karman: We'll see agents on portals and community websites helping people trade goods and information. Venture capitalists are shifting from dotcoms to software and hardware companies. In Europe, that shift is hard to make because we don't have a Silicon Valley from which lots of companies are conquering the world. As a consequence, the slowly emerging Internet and software industry in Europe may not survive. If I were starting a new software company now, I'd go to California or Boston. StatementsA. Business travelers will set the trend of future computer market.B. Europe will catch up with America in the high-tech industry.C. Free software helps bring about digital equality.D. Voice e-mail adds a human touch to online communication.E. Compactness and multi-function will be a trend in the future market.F. Privacy needs special protection in the information age.G.
