单选题Increasingly, over the past ten years, people—especially young people—have become aware of the need to change their eating habit, because much of the food they eat, particularly processed foods, is not good for the health. Consequently, there has been a growing interest in natural foods: foods which do not contain chemical additives and which have not been affected by chemical fertilizers, widely used in farming today. Natural foods, for example, are vegetable, fruit and grain which have been grown in soil and are rich in organic matter. In simple terms, this means that the soil has been nourished by unused vegetable matter, which provides it with essential vitamins and minerals. This in itself is a natural process compared with the use of chemicals and fertilizers, the main purpose of which is to increase the a-mount—but not the quality--of foods grown in commercial farming areas. Natural foods also include animals which have been allowed to feed and move freely in healthy pastures. Compare this with what happens in the mass production of poultry: there are battery farm, for example, where thousands of chickens live crowded together in one building and are fed on food which is little better than rubbish. Chickens kept in this way are not only tasteless as food; they also produce eggs which lack important vitamins. There are other aspects of healthy eating which are now receiving increasing attention from experts on diet. Take, for example, the question of sugar. This is actually a nonessential food! Although a natural alternative, such as honey, can be used to sweeten food if it is necessary, we can in fact do without it. It is not that sugar is harmful in itself. But it does seem to be addictive: the quantity we use has grown steadily over the last two centuries and in Britain today each person consumes an average of 200 pounds a year! Yet all it does is to provide us with energy, in the form of calories. There are no vitamins in it, no minerals, and no fibre. It is significant that nowadays fibre is considered to be an important part of a healthy diet. In white bread, for example, the fibre has been removed. But it is present in unrefined flour and of course in vegetables. It is interesting to note that in countries where the national diet contains large quantities of unrefined flour and vegetables, certain diseases are comparatively rare. Hence the emphasis is placed on the eating of wholemeal bread and more vegetables by modem experts in "healthy eating".

单选题 You must have been troubled by when to say "I love you" because it is one of the greatest puzzles in our life. What if you say it first and your partner doesn't love you back? Or if they do say it but you don't feel they mean it? Being the first to declare your love can be nerve-racking(紧张) and risky and can leave you feeling as vulnerable as a turtle with no shell. But is the person who says it first really in a position of weakness? Doesn't it pay to hold back, play it cool and wait until the other half has shown their hand first? "A really good relationship should be about being fair and being equal," says psychologist Sidney Crown. "But love is seldom equal. " All relationships go through power struggles but, he says, if a love imbalance continues for years, the rot will set in. "That feeling of 'I've always loved you more' may be subverted(颠覆, 破坏) for a time, but it never goes away completely and it often emerges in squabbling(大声争吵). " In love, at least, the silent, withholding type is not always the most powerful. "The strongest one in a relationship is often the person who feels confident enough to talk about their feelings," says educational psychologist Ingrid Collins. Psychosexual therapist Paula Hall agrees. "The one with the upper hand is often the person who takes the initiative. In fact, the person who says 'I love you' first may also be the one who says ' I'm bored with you' first. " Hall believes that much depends on how "I love you" is said and the motivation of the person saying it. "Is it said when they're drunk? Is it said before their partner flies off on holiday, and what it really means is 'Please don't be unfaithful to me'? By saying 'I love you', they really saying 'Do you love me?' If so, wouldn't it just be more honest to say that?" Collins agrees that intention is everything. "It's not what is said, but how it's said. What it comes down to is the sincerity of the speaker. "

单选题Maurice Porter: I propose to ban tobacco. It would be done in three stages. First tobacco taxes should be sharply increased and tobacco goods would be banned. Then smoking in public places would be forbidden, and all the tobacco companies would be nationalized by the Government. Finally, all the factories would be closed and the sales of tobacco would be a crime. Banning of tobacco becomes an urgent task as the smokers are becoming younger and younger. I recently found that there were quite a few young girls smoking in the street, waiting for their buses or just getting around. We should be responsible for our people's health problem. We should be responsible for our younger generation.Peter Stone: Let's look at this from an economic point of view. Mr. Potter's plan to nationalize the tobacco companies would cost the Government a lot of money. If the factories were closed, all the money would be wasted. The Government would lose all their tobacco taxes, and what is more, thousands and thousands of people would lose their jobs. It would be very hard to relocate this workforce very quickly. It might turn out to become a big issue of unemployment in this city. That's too high a price to pay for this.Mary Jones: Smoking is a very bad habit. It should be brained. Thousands of people die of lung cancer while the big tobacco companies are spending a fortune on advertising. Money should be spent on improving the quality of people's lives instead of mining them. And smokers are very selfish people. There's a "no smoking" sign in our library but a lot of people ignore it. How can normal people enjoy reading in our reading room when their eyes are full of smoke? Besides, it does not do any good to their health either. They become the so-called second-hand smokers in this way and are forced to smoke while staying in such a room.Joanna Wilson: I smoke about fifteen cigarettes a day. I'm not ashamed of it. In my job there is a lot of nervous tension. I face fierce competition every day. Smoking helps me relax and it also helps me concentrate on my work. People talk about cancer. Doctors say there is a direct link between smoking and cancer. They also say overeating causes heart disease and overwork causes stomach problems. Will the Government ban eating and working? Of course not! Life is full of risks. I might die in a car accident tomorrow. People must be free to make their own decisions and should enjoy the present instead of worrying about the future.Richard Carr: I gave up smoking last year, lint it wasn't easy. It seems I cannot refuse a cigarette without making some excuse. I have tried every possible way to stick to nurturing the new habit of not smoking. I used many substitutes at first, such as chewing gums or candies, doing more physical exercises, even taking some special medicine. It is one year now. I am now getting used to it and I am happy that I am finally rid of the bad habit of smoking. My wife gives me a lot of encouragement and my doctor gives me very useful advice. I hope I will be happier and healthier than ever before. Now match each of the persons (61 to 65) to the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements. Statements[A] It doesn't pay for banning of tobacco product.[B] I should have my freedom to decide what I should do.[C] Tobacco should be banned gradually, yet it is an urgent task to start right now.[D] Doctors say there is a direct link between smoking and cancer.[E] Money should not be wasted by the tobacco companies in their advertisement for their harmful products to ruin people's lives.[F] It is not easy to give up smoking.[G] Smoking is bad for both smokers and nonsmokers.

单选题Most people dislike rattlesnakes. Years ago people commonly believed that these and other snakes had the power to cast a spell on people. Some people become almost terrified at the thought of even seeing a rattler. Even the lover of the outdoors is compelled to. look out for these creatures. However, a few sensible precautions decrease the chances of being struck by any poisonous snake. Rattlers come in a variety of sizes—from about two feet in length to over six feet. At the end of the rattler' s tail it is a set of rings. These make up the rattle. When the snake is alarmed, the tail shakes, causing a warning noise to be transmitted a considerable distance. Rattlers may be found in nearly all states and in some Canadian provinces. However, most of them arc more at home in dry places, such as the western United States and Mexico. Rocky, isolated areas are favorite places for rattlers to lodge. They may be seen mornings and evenings sunning on rocky ledges. In the heat of the day they seek out a shelter from the sun under rocks or in holes. The rattlesnake is in some ways a friend to humans. This statement contradicts some common views of these creatures. The harmful poisonous fluid released in a rattler' s bite kills small animals—and may kill or cause sickness in people. However, rattlers are competitors with owls and hawks for mice and rats. Many of these pests have been the losers in a clash with a rattlesnake in its quest for food. Thus the rattler helps control the numbers of mice and rats. How can you avoid a rattlesnake bite.'? A few principles have been given by experienced people of the outdoors. First, do not run through high grass in rattlesnake country. You might surprise a snake that is otherwise minding its own business. A slow walk insures ample time for the snake to slide away or proclaim its presence. Although these snakes are very mobile, they will not chase you. If you hear a rattle, back up and walk away slowly. Do not run ! The snake may have a friend or relative in the area who would resent being stepped on as you dash away. Second, consider your wearing apparel, particularly footwear. Snake fangs have occasionally pierced thick, western boots. However, such footwear offers much more protection than the usual shoes. Finally, when chimbing, look before you reach or step. Rattlers like to lie on rocky ledges. Although you intended to grab a rock rather than a rattler, the surprised snake may not understand.

单选题Americans are getting ready for the biggest soccer event in the world. For the first time the world cup soccer competition will be held in the United States. While millions play the game around the world, soccer or football has only recently become popular here. It is only in the last 30 years that large numbers of young Americans became interested in soccer. Now it is the fastest growing sport in the country. A recent study found that almost 18 million young boys and girls play soccer in the United States. The study also found that soccer is beginning to replace more traditional games like American football as the most popular sport among students. And so, when the world cup begins next week, more than one million Americans are expected to go and see the teams play. Organizers say this year's world cup will be the biggest ever. All the seats at most of the 52 games have already been sold. Soccer has been played in the United States for a little more than one hundred years. But how did the sport come to this country? And how long has it existed in other parts of the world? No one knows exactly where the idea for soccer Came from, or when people began playing the game. Some scientists say there is evidence that ball games using the feet were played thousands of years ago. There is evidence that ancient Greeks and Romans and native American Indians all played games similar to soccer. Most experts agree that Britain is the birthplace of modem soccer. They also agree that the British spread the game around the world. Unlike the game today, which uses balls of man-made material or leather, early soccer balls were often made of animal stomachs. The rules of early soccer games also differed from those we have today.
