单选题Overweight has become a problem people all around the world face, and it does not look like it will be solved in the near future regardless of the various efforts from all walks of life. And for those who have a heavier body than they are supposed to, one advice is given repeatedly: eat less and exercise more. This has long been the suggestion for getting rid of those extra pounds. But now it seems that all the hard work may have been in vain. Scientists say there are ten other reasons why people just keep getting bigger. Scientists claim that sleeping habits, central heating, medicines and even some pollutants can play a role in weight gain. Lack of sleep could be partly to blame. In recent years, the average night's sleep has dropped from nine hours to just seven. Sleep lack changes levels of the hormones that regulate food intake and body fat and increase hunger and appetite. If it is too hot or too cold, we burn calories to cool down or heat up. But if the temperature is just right, the calories may be turned into body fat instead. Those who take medicines to control their blood pressure can often put on more weight. Similarly, studies have shown that going on the Pill can add to a woman's weight. Mother Nature may also be to blame, with our body shape being partly determined by our parents. The overweight are also more likely to be associated with partners of a similar size, and their children are more likely to be overweight. The scientists from Yale, Cornell and Johns Hopkins published their analysis of these findings last week. Their reasoning goes like this:1. Sleep--Too little increases appetite.2. Medicine--Many modern medicines lead to us putting on weight.3. Mother's age--Older women are more likely to have obese children.4. Giving up smoking--Nicotine suppresses the appetite.5. Getting older--Weight tends to increase with age.

单选题It was a cold spring morning in London. People walking in the street were wearing heavy clothes. The weather had been very bad for the past week, and now many people were ill. Today there were quite a few people in the doctor's waiting room. There were still a few minutes before the doctor started seeing the patients (患者). A woman of about sixty years old was at the front of the queue(队伍). She did not live in this city. She came from a farm north of London. She was here to visit her daughter who was a secretary in a big company. She wanted to see the doctor because of her back problem. Soon an Indian (印度人) came into the waiting room, and walked straight to the doctor's door. When she saw this, the old woman stood up and took hold of his arm. She said, slowly, "We were all here before you. You must wait for your turn. Do...you...understand?" The Indian answered, "No, madam. You don't understand! You're all after me! I am the doctor!/

Text{{/B}} If the sun has enough {{U}}(26) {{/U}} to warm
and light the whole earth, it must have enough power to do other things,
{{U}}(27) {{/U}}. Can we use the sun's {{U}}(28) {{/U}} energy
to supply electricity, or at least to perform the function which electricity or
other types of power usually perform? The answer is {{U}}(29) {{/U}}
. For example, people have for many years been using the
{{U}}(30) {{/U}} heat of the sun to cook by solar {{U}}(31)
{{/U}} which have been built with several incurred {{U}}(32)
{{/U}} reflecting the sun and focusing the heat on the cooking element. This
{{U}}(33) {{/U}} can be used like a gas or electric stove; it is more
expensive to make but it doesn't need any {{U}}(34) {{/U}} and so costs
{{U}}(35) {{/U}} to use. Another {{U}}(36) {{/U}} of using solar
energy is in house heating. The {{U}}(37) {{/U}} of
energy we use most is electricity, and every day more is {{U}}(38)
{{/U}} . But electricity has to be made too, and to make it huge quantities
of fuel is required -- oil, coal, gas and nowadays even uranium.
The question which {{U}}(39) {{/U}} everyone today is: how long
will these fuels {{U}}(40) {{/U}}? Nobody knows it for sure,
{{U}}(41) {{/U}} most experts think it will soon be difficult to obtain
sufficient electricity from these sources. It is possible that the sun can make
a(n) {{U}}(42) {{/U}} here, too. Solar power has already
been used to produce {{U}}(43) {{/U}} heat. In Southern France a solar
furnace has been built, {{U}}(44) {{/U}} temperatures reach more than 3
000 centigrade. This furnace is not only used for experiment {{U}}(45)
{{/U}}, but could be used to produce steam for a power
station.
