单选题The policy of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has always been primarily towards self-help and prevention of disease. UNICEF's stand on disablement, therefore, tends to prevention rather than rehabilitation. Of the more than 80 million children born every year in the developing countries, an estimated 5 million die and at least twice as many are disabled by diseases which have been largely eliminated in developed nations through immunization. In Sudan, the largest country in Africa, less than 10% of the children are vaccinated against diseases such as measles, polio, whooping cough, diphtheria, tetanus and tuberculosis, all of which can kill or disable the unprotected child. They CAN be protected but supplying vaccine is not enough. A successful immunization programmer depends on a crucial factor—the COLD CHAIN. Without a system of storage and distribution which keeps the vaccine below the critical 8C, the vaccine deteriorates and its power is lost. The problem of establishing a cold chain is particularly acute in a hot country like Sudan where the distances the vaccine must travel are so vast. Just £50,000 is needed to enable a medium-sized country to mount a national child immunization campaign against polio, buying 200 refrigerators, 18,000 insulated jugs, 20 deep-freeze units and three refrigerated vans. One dose of polio vaccine costs just lip and 50p will protect 60 children against TB.

The ostrich, the largest bird in the world at
present, lives in the drier regions of Africa outside the actual deserts.Because
of its very long, powerful legs and the floating effect of its extended wings,it
is able to run at great speed over considerable distances. The
female ostrich normally produces about twenty eggs every rainy season. When the
female ostrich begins to lay her eggs, however, she does not begin in her own
nest.Instead she goes off in search of the nests of neighboring females and
laystwo or three eggs in each of them.By the time she has laid eight or nine
eggs, she returns and lays the rest in her own nest. Because of
the size of the eggs, the female ostrich cannot lay more than one every two
days,so it takes her three weeks to finish laying in her own nest.During that
period, she spends a lot of time away from her nest looking for food. And while
she is off her nest, other females visit it to lay their eggs amongst hers.By
the time she is ready to sit on the eggs to hatch them, there could be up to
thirty eggs in her nest, over half of which are not her own. The
female ostrich can comfortably cover only about twenty eggs when she is sitting
on the nest, so before settling down she pushes the surplus ten or so eggs out
of the nest. The rejected eggs, however, never include any of her own. Each female
is remarkably consistent in the size and shape of the eggs she produces, so it
is not difficult for her to distinguish her own from those of
strangers. Of all the eggs laid by a colony of ostriches, only a
very small number hatch into young birds. There are times when nests are left
unprotected, for there are too few males to sit on all the nests at night. Thus
there are ample opportunities for their natural enemies to raid the nests and
eat the eggs.In fact, nearly 80% of the nests are destroyed. But even if a
particular female's nest suffers this fate, there is a good chance that one or
two of her eggs will be hatched in the nest of one of her
neighbors.

Americans are getting ready for the
biggest soccer event in the world. For the first time the world cup soccer
competition will be held in the United States. While millions play the game
around the world, soccer or football has only recently become popular here. It
is only in the last 30 years that large numbers of young Americans became
interested in soccer. Now it is the fastest growing sport in the country. A
recent study found that almost 18 million young boys and girls play soccer in
the United States. The study also found that soccer is beginning
to replace more traditional games like American football as the most popular
sport among students. And so, when the world cup begins next week, more than one
million Americans are expected to go and see the teams play. Organizers say this
year's world cup will be the biggest ever. All the seats at most of the 52 games
have already been sold. Soccer has been played in the United
States for a little more than one hundred years. But how did the sport come to
this country? And how long has it existed in other parts of the world? No one
knows exactly where the idea for soccer Came from, or when people began playing
the game. Some scientists say there is evidence that ball games using the feet
were played thousands of years ago. There is evidence that ancient Greeks and
Romans and native American Indians all played games similar to soccer.
Most experts agree that Britain is the birthplace of modem soccer. They
also agree that the British spread the game around the world. Unlike the game
today, which uses balls of man-made material or leather, early soccer balls were
often made of animal stomachs. The rules of early soccer games also differed
from those we have today.

The Fifth National Census Office under
the State Council has called on everyone for a factual report in the upcoming
census due to be taken on November 1st. "Any action which may
put down the accuracy of the census is forbidden and will receive severe
punishment. "Lin Changsong, deputy director of the office, said at a press
conference in Beijing on Wednesday. Almost all the preparations
for the census have been finished, 6 million census workers have been selected
and trained and initial residence registration has been accomplished.
The census will start at midnight on November 1st. During
the first 10 days of November, census takers will work from door to
door. In order to get accurate (精确的) data on the population, the
central government has permitted households who have not registered their
children who are "more than family-planning policy allows" to apply for lasting
residence during the census. China's family-planning policy
encourages urban citizens to have one child per family and rural families with
one girl child may have a second child. The policy is more flexible among
ethnic( 种族的) minority (少数) people and is dependent upon the local autonomous
regional government. People who violate (违反) the regulation have
to pay a fine in order to make up for the government's expenditure (支出) in
bringing up and educating the extra children. According to
statistics available to China Daily, China's population reached 1.26 billion in
1999. And the central government expects that the figure will be below 1.3
billion in the census.
