单选题 By almost any measure, there is a boom in Internet-based
instruction. In just a few years, 34 percent of American universities have begun
offering some form of distance learning (DL), and among the larger schools, it's
close to 90 percent. If you doubt the popularity of the trend, you
probably haven't heard of the University of Phoenix. It grants degrees entirely
on the basis of online instruction. It enrolls 90,000 students, a statistic used
to support its claim to be the largest private university in the
country. While the kinds of instruction offered in these
programs will differ, DL usually signifies a course in which the instructors
post syllabi (课程大纲), reading assignment, and schedules on Websites, and students
send in their assignments by e-mail. Generally speaking, face-to-face
communication with an instructor is minimized or eliminated
altogether. The attraction for students might at first seem
obvious. Primarily, there's the convenience promised by courses on the Net: you
can do the work, as they say, in your pajamas (睡衣). But figures indicate that
the reduced effort results in a reduced commitment to the course. While dropout
rate for all freshmen at American universities is around 20 percent, the rate
for online students is 35 percent. Students themselves seem to understand the
weaknesses inherent in the setup. In a survey conducted for e-Cornell, the DL
division of Cornell University, less than a third of the respondents expected
the quality of the online course to be as good as the classroom
course. Clearly, from the schools' perspective, there's a lot
of money to be saved. Although some of the more ambitious programs require new
investments in servers and networks to support collaborative software, most DL
courses can run on existing or minimally upgraded (升级) systems. The more
students who enroll in a course but don't come to campus, the more school saves
on keeping the lights on in the classrooms, paying doorkeepers, and maintaining
parking lots. And, while there's evidence that instructors must work harder to
run a DL course for a variety of reasons, they won't be paid any more, and might
well be paid less.

单选题A consumer survey examining the children's and teenager's book markets was conducted by Bruno 22% were 18-19 years old, 28% were 30-44 years old and 50% were 45 years old and older. Most were married (79%); 21% were single, divorced or widowed. The teen sample included 53 girls and 47 boys. Fifty-seven were in the 12-14 age range, 43 in the 15-17 age range. Twenty-four teens were interviewed by telephone and 76 were interviewed in shopping malls across the country. To shed some light on the children's and teen book market, PW and BookExpo America examined consumer trends among children's and teenage book buyers. The survey evaluated what kinds of children's and teenage books consumers choose, how they choose them and where they go to buy them. The findings paint a positive picture of America's younger generations of readers and point optimistically toward a future country of book lovers. Judging from responses, adults who buy children's books believe that books play an important role in a child's development. Consequently, the majority children's book buyers take seriously the process of choosing books for children. For their part, teens feel that "reading is cool" and "makes you smarter". An analysis of these attitudes and an examination of the book-buying habits of children's and teen book consumers could be useful in helping publishers, promoters and booksellers provide more appealing products and services.

{{B}}Douglas Spensor{{/B}} I want the maximum amount
of compensation from the new supermarket owners for both loss of business and
inconvenience of moving. As the most recent of the tenants in these shops, I
would like to say I feel it is very unfair to calculate compensation based on
length of time in residence. I think it should be on the amount of goods Sold
day by day in shop. I get more than the tobacco and magazine vendor although
they have dealt in this supermarket for over fifteen years. My goods are more
expensive. Besides, my business is excellent and I have just employed five
assistants. {{B}}Sony Herry{{/B}} I want the maximum
amount of compensation to be paid to all shop owners. The formula for the
compensation can be worked out in detail later, but I want a deal that will give
me the most amount of money as my business, not very big, is sufficient to
support my wife and 12 year old son. And I have planned to retire soon anyway
for I have worked here for more than 15 years. I hope we will make an agreement
among all the shop owners not to accept employment in the new supermarket unless
they pay us enough compensation. I insist that all my colleagues stick to this
agreement. {{B}}Maltese Brown{{/B}} I feel I have the
greatest amount of money to lose than any of the other shop owners as I have
recently spent a large amount of money on new valuable stock which I need to
sell. I don' t want any compensation at all. I simply want the landlord to be
honorable and to allow us to renew our tenancy agreements. I have made an
agreement with the other shop owners not to accept employment in the new
supermarket if it is offered, unless all the shop owners can work there.
{{B}}Tom Clouse{{/B}} Something should be done about this
situation. The reputation of the business is most important. Many people come to
my salon regularly only because I am the best hairdresser here. My business has
been very successful over the last five years. But if I close up my shop during
the decoration, I will lose many of my customers. When considering the
compensation, we should take into account of the factor of reputation.
{{B}}Durante Li{{/B}} I do not want the market to close. The
majority of my customers live near the market and it would be very difficult for
them to travel to the other side of this district for meat. And the store of my
goods is very expensive. I need fridges, even icehouses. The compensation should
cover all the costs, otherwise, I wouldn' t move out.{{I}} Now match

单选题For many of us, being successful means living a healthy, long life, content with friends and family. For others, it means doing what we love. What does success mean to you? What would you have to be doing to feel that you are a successful person? There are many ways of defining success. It is accurate to say that each of us has our own concept of success to the extent that each of us is responsible for setting our own goals and determining whether we have met these goals satisfactorily. Because each of us possesses unique differences in genetic ability and favorable environments to express these abilities, it is necessarily true that we must define success broadly. For some people, simply being able to live their life with a minimum of misery and suffering is considered a success. Think of the peace of mind of the poor shepherd who tends his sheep, enjoys his frugal life with his family in the beauty of nature, and who is respected because he does a good job of achieving the goals expected of and accepted by him and his society. On the other hand, it seems that even though some people appear to be rich in material possessions, many of them seem to be miserable and consider themselves unsuccessful when judged by their own standards of success. Because not all ventures can be successful, one should not set unrealistic goals for achieving success, but if one has self-confidence it would be unfortunate to set one's goals at too low a level of achievement. A wise counselor once said to a young man who was experiencing frustration with his own professional success: "You do not have to set your goal to reach the moon in order to have success in traveling. Sometimes one can be very successful merely by taking a walk in the park, or riding the subway downtown," the counselor added, "You have not really failed and spoiled your chances for success until you have been unsuccessful at something you really like, and to which you have given your best effort./
