单选题Questions 22 to 25 are based on the following passage.
单选题You may come into an empty office after you are told that the school principal is expecting you in her office; you may be called at the last minute to come to class after you were told that the class is cancelled for the teacher's illness; you may even be given a loving letter, and then find out later it is written by some of your best friends, what is wrong? Nothing, it's just April 1st. We all know April 1st can also be called April fool's Day. But do you know where it came from? Do you know this day used to be a nation's New Year? This is the case in France in sixteenth-century, which, when you think about it, may make more sense, for April is the time when spring returns. And the idea of beginning a year with spring would so easily be understood. The celebration for the New Year is pretty much the same as it is today. People hold and join all sorts of parties, singing and dancing into the late night. Then in 1562, a new calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory for the Christian world. And the New Year began to be celebrated on January first. For any nation, the celebration of New Year is something that can not be replaced by other occasions. And the change of the New Year's date would not be accepted in an easy way. That's also why some people chose not to believe it when hearing the news. So they insist to celebrate New Year on April first, others played tricks on them and called them April fools. Americans play small tricks on friends and strangers in a similar way on the first of April. One commonly-played trick is pointing down to a friend's shoe and saying, your shoelace is untied. And the examples we mentioned at the beginning of our passage is among the limitless ways for children to play tricks on their classmates, friends and so on. Most April fool jokes are in good fun and not meant to harm anyone. The cleverest April fool joke is the one where everyone laughs, especially the person upon whom the joke is played.

单选题Dollars and cents are the basic units of American money. The back of all dollar bills are green (hence "greenbacks"). The commonly used coins are: one cent(penny), five cents(nickel), l0 cents ( dime), and 25 cents (quarter). 50 pieces ( half dollar) and silver dollars ( not really silver anymore) are gaining in usage, while there has been talk of phasing out the penny--that's inflation for you. "Always early plenty of quarters when travelling. Very useful for phones, soda machines, laundry machines, etc." There is generally no problem in using U. S. dollars in Canada, but this is never possible in reverse. It's useful always to carry small change for things like exact fare buses, but do not carry large sums of cash. Instead keep the bulk of your money in travellers' cheques which Can be purchased both in the US and abroad and should be in dollar denominations. The best known cheques are those of American Express, so you will have the least difficulty cashing these, even in out of the way places. Thomas Cook travellers' cheques are also acceptable, especially as lost ones can be reclaimed at Some car rental companies. Dollar denomination cheques can be used like regular money. There's no need to cash them at a bank: use them instead to pay for meals, supermarket purchases or whatever. Ten or twenty dollar cheques are accepted like this almost always and you'll be given change just as though you'd presented the cashier with dollar bills. Be prepared to show I. D. when you cash your cheques. Credit cards can be even more valuable than travellers' cheques, as they are often used to guarantee room reservations over the phone and are accepted in lieu of deposit when renting a car--indeed without a credit card you may be considered so untrustworthy that not only a deposit but your passport will be held as security too. The major credit cards are VISA, Master Charge and Access, Diners Club and American Express. If you hold a bank card, it could well be worthwhile to increase your credit limit for travel purposes--you should ask your bank manager.

Thierry Daniel Henry (born on 17 August
1977) is a French football striker currently playing for Spanish La Liga club FC
Barcelona and the French national team. Henry was born and
brought up in the tough neighborhood of Les Ulis, Essonne—a suburb of
Paris—where he played for an array of local sides as a youngster and showed
great promise as a goal-scorer. He was spotted by AS Monaco in 1990 and signed
instantly, making his professional debut in 1994. Good form led to an
international call-up in 1998, after which he signed for the Italian defending
champions Juventus. He had a disappointing season playing on the wing, before
joining Arsenal (兵工厂) for 10.5 million in 1999. It was at
Arsenal that Henry made his name as a world-class footballer. Despite initially
struggling in the Premiership, he emerged as Arsenal's top goal-scorer for
almost every season of his tenure there. Under long-time mentor and coach Arsène
Wenger, Henry became a prolific striker and Arsenal's all-time leading scorer
with 226 goals in all competitions. The Frenchman won two league titles and
three FA Cups with the gunners shoulder to shoulder; he was twice nominated for
the FIFA World Player of the Year, was named the PFA Players' Player of the Year
twice, and the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year three times.
Henry spent his final two seasons with Arsenal as club captain, leading them to
the UEFA Champions League final in 2006. In June 2007, after eight years with
Arsenal, he transferred to FC Barcelona for a fee of 24 million.
Henry has enjoyed similar success with the French national squad, having
won the 1998 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2000 (the Delaunay Cup). In October 2007,
he surpassed Michel Platini's record to become France's top goal-scorer of all
time. Off the pitch, as a result of his own experience, Henry is an active
spokesperson against racism in football. His footballing style and personality
have ensured that he is one of the most commercially marketable footballers in
the world; he has been featured in advertisements for Nike, Reebok, Renault,
Pepsi and Gillette.

单选题Shelly She' s absolutely adorable. I think she' s very pretty, she makes me laugh a lot, um... she tells terrible jokes but I like the way she tells them. She' s a bit naughty sometimes and I curse her when she gets me up at six o' clock in the morning, but when I hear her singing in the morning, well, all is forgiven. She can twist me round her little finger, of course. Terry Well, he' s quite well-dressed and punctual. Sometimes he' s cheerful and tells us jokes, but other times we have to do a lot of work. We don' t really know him very well. Oh, I know he' s married, but I' ve never met him socially or anything like that. He seems very professional. Angel I' ve never actually spoken to him. Mumm, I see him everyday, of course, as he leaves his car and gets in the lift to his office on the top floor. He' s always terribly well-dressed, and he must wear expensive after-shave because you can still smell it ten minutes after he' s gone. Cherry People are generally very nice, but well, there are some difficult ones. They shout at you for walking on the garden, or for not shutting the gate, or because you have shut the gate, or they park their cars so that you can' t actually get to their front door. And of course there are the dogs. I prefer dogs, the ones, but.., when there' s one going for me I' m terrified of them: Victoria He was very boring and predictable. The kind of person who remembered birthdays and anniversaries, but who made you angry because there was absolutely nothing spontaneous about him. His ideas of fun were too unadventurous. Well, the first few years were OK, but after that I' d just had enough. Reliable, stable, dependable, and boring. Now match each of the persons with the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements. StatementsA. doctor and patientB. husband and wifeC. mailman and customerD. parent and childE. colleagueF. employer and employeeG. student and teacher
