单选题A Frenchman went to stay at the best hotel in a small Italian town with his wife. One night, he went out for a walk alone. The small street was dark and quiet. Suddenly he felt someone behind him. He tamed his head and saw an Italian young man who quickly walked past him. The man was nearly out of sight (看不见了 ) when the French- man suddenly found that his watch was gone. He thought that it must be the Italian who had taken his watch. He decided to follow him and get back the watch. Soon the Frenchman caught up with the Italian. Neither of them understood the other's language. The French- man frightened the Italian with his fist (拳头) and pointed at the Italian's watch. In the end the Italian took off his watch and gave it to the Frenchman. When he returned to the hotel, the Frenchman told his wife what bad happened. He was greatly surprised when his wife pointed to the watch on the table. Now he realized (意识到) that by mistake he had robbed ( 抢劫 ) the watch and it was the Italian's.

单选题Between the eighth and eleventh centuries A. D., the Byzantine Empire staged an almost unparalleled economic and cultural revival, a revival that is all the more striking because it followed a long period of severe internal decline. By the early eighth century, the empire had lost roughly 2/3 of the territory it had possessed in the year 600, and its remaining area was being raided by Arabs and Bulgarians, who at times threatened to take Constantinople and extinguish the empire altogether. The wealth of the state and its subjects was greatly diminished, and artistic and literary production had virtually ceased. By the early eleventh century, however, the empire had regained almost half of its lost possessions, its new frontiers were secure, and its influence extended far beyond its borders. The economy had recovered. The treasury was full. And art and scholarship had advanced. To consider the Byzantine military, cultural and economic advances as differentiated aspects of a single phenomenon is reasonable. After all, these three forms or progress have gone together in a number of states and civilizations. Rome under Augustus and fifth-century Athens provide the most obvious examples in antiquity. Moreover, an examination of the apparent sequential connections among military, economic, and cultural forms of progress might help explain the dynamics of historical change. The common explanation of these apparent connections in the case of Byzantium would run like this: when the empire had turned back enemy raids on its own territory and had begun to raid and conquer enemy territory, Byzantine resources naturally expanded and more money became available to patronize art and literature. Therefore, Byzantine military achievements led to economic advances, which in turn led to cultural revival. No doubt this hypothetical pattern did apply at times during the course of the recovery. Yet it is not clear that military advances invariably came first, economic advances second, and intellectual advances third. In the 860's the Byzantine Empire began to recover from Arab incursions so that by 862 the military balance with the Abbasid Caliphate had been permanently altered in the empire's favor. The beginning of the empire's economic revival however can be placed between 810 and 830. Finally the Byzantine revival of learning appears to have begun even earlier. A number of notable scholars and writers appeared by 788 and by last decade of the eighth century a cultural revival was in full bloom, a revival that last until the fall of Constinople in 1453. Thus the commonly expected order of military revival followed by economic and then by cultural recovery was reversed in Byzantium. In fact the revival of Byzantine learning may itself have influenced the subsequent economic and military expansion.

单选题Many theories concerning the causes of juvenile delinquency (crimes committed by young people) focus either on the individual or on society as the major contributing influence. Theories 1 on the individual suggest that children engage in criminal behavior 2 they were not sufficiently penalized for previous misdeeds or that they have learned criminal behavior through 3 with others. Theories focusing on the role of society that children commit crimes in 4 to their failure to rise above their socioeconomic status 5 as a rejection of middle-class values. Most theories of juvenile delinquency have focused on children from disadvantaged families, 6 the fact that children from wealthy homes also commit crimes. The latter may commit crimes 7 lack of adequate parental control. All theories, however, are tentative and are 8 to criticism. Changes in the social structure may indirectly 9 juvenile crime rates. For example, changes in the economy that 10 to fewer job opportunities for youth and rising unemployment 11 make gainful employment increasingly difficult to obtain. The resulting discontent may in 12 lead more youths into criminal behavior. Families have also 13 changes these years. More families consist of one parent households or two working parents, 14 , children are likely to have less supervision at home 40() was common in the traditional family 15 . This lack of parental supervision is thought to be an influence on juvenile crime rates. Other 16 causes of offensive acts include frustration or failure in school, the increased 17 of drugs and alcohol, and the growing 18 of child abuse and child neglect. All these conditions tend to increase the probability of a child committing a criminal act, 19 a direct causal relationship has not yet been established.

单选题Burn rate is the speed at which a startup business consumes money. My rate was $75,000 a month. Four months after my company was set up, I had only a quarter of the starting capital left in the bank. Looking for guidance, I went to talk to my friend, Arthur Walworth about my new venture. "Times of great change always bring out the risk-takers," he said. "And they leave winners and losers. My grandfather invested a lot of money in a project of Thomas Edison"s that ended up in failure. " I was lost in thought at the notion of a Thomas Edison project ending in failure. Damn. It could happen to anybody! I must continue. At that time CD-ROM sales had bombed, so investors were fleeing from the field. I didn"t turn away from mine entirely, but instead linked it to the Internet. My plan was to offer consumers descriptions of home-design products by using a special software and let them modify the designs. Then we can enable them to get online professional and constructional help to have their houses built, decorated and furnished according to their own choice. To realize my plan I needed investors, so I continued to meet regularly with venture capitalists. One said I had a great idea. But I needed to test it. Get the money somewhere. To get this money from a VC is going to cost my wife and my children! He turned down my request. Wife? Children? I barely remembered them. I was working nonstop-struggling to turn the key in the lock, to find the fight way ahead. The pressure was terrible. It was just at this time that my parents and sisters stepped up. Two hundred thousand dollars. A lot of money to them, invested in this crazy son and brother without a moment"s hesitation. Dad and Mom had driven out from Chicago and seen the passion in my little office and the trouble at home. With their help my company survived and has been prospering ever since.

The Venice Festival' s focus on presenting films of high artistic merit prevents this festival from acquiring the commercial atmosphere of the Cannes Film Festival or the Berlin International Film Festival, but it has also lent the Venice Festival an. air of exclusivity. Festival director Gillo Pontecorvo has attempted to combat this reputation by ending the traditional exclusion of Hollywood films from the program.
