单选题During the meal, you'd better be careful not to leave a spoon in a soup bowl or coffee cup or any other dish. The coffee spoon ought to be on the saucer, the soup spoon ought to be on the plate under the bowl. When you are having soup, make the least noises and use the side of your spoon inside out this way, not the tip. And you mustn't pick up your soup bowls so as to drink away the last drops of your soup from the bottom of the bowl. Very often there is only one main course and salad, followed by your sweet. If you find the meal not square enough, say "Oh, it's delicious!" and ask for some more of the chicken or steak or whatever you have just had. The hostess will be very glad that you appreciate her cooking and will give you an extra portion. But if you observe the Chinese way of being polite and say "No, thank you" when the hostess offers you more, you will most probably starve later. Because Americans will never press food on you. Yet it is not polite to keep silent and not to talk with the person next to you. It would be considered good manners if you handle your silverware with care so that they don't clatter. Do not belch in the presence of the others and do not hiccup more than you can help. When coffee comes, drink it from your cup. The coffee spoon should rest on the saucer while you are drinking. And smoking, of course, is rarely seen at a dinner table. Well, when the meal is finished, the guests put their napkins on the table and stand up, the men again helping the ladies with their chairs. Do not fold your napkin in the original folds unless you are asked to stay for another meal. After the dinner, the guests usually stay for an hour or two, then they would say, "well, I'm afraid I must be going now." The host and hostess would of course urge everyone to stay longer, "What, already? Won't you have another coffee?" The guests, for instance, would say, "1 love to, but I have to be up early tomorrow. Thank you for a most enjoyable evening. Good-night." And if you stay overnight or over the weekend, it will be courteous to send a thank-you note to the host or hostess the following day, very often with a small gift such as a box of chocolate or some flowers as a token of appreciation of their hospitality.

单选题One sure sign of the fall season is the sight of scarecrows everywhere. Scarecrows are used for practical reasons by farmers, and as decorations by many people. You can find scarecrows on farms and in yards, and also on T-shirts, sweatshirts, and other clothing. Scarecrows were first used over 2000 years ago by farmers who needed to keep birds out of their fields. Crows and blackbirds were always eating the vegetable crops grown by farmers. The farmers had to do something to stop the crows from coming into the fields. They made these human-like objects out of anything they could find. They used sticks, hay, and pine straw, and dressed the scarecrows in old clothing. The farmers tried their best to make these creations look like real people in a field or garden. They hoped that the crows would see the "person" standing in the field and be afraid of it. Scarecrows are still seen today, but most farmers use other things now to get rid of pesky animals. Scarecrows are more often a decoration, and a way to mark the beginning of fall.

单选题Directions: Read the following text. Answer
the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I
always encourage such people, but I also explain that there's a big difference
between "being a writer" and writing. In most cases these individuals are
dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. "You've
got to want to write, "I say to them," not want to be a writer."
The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair.
For. every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is
never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a
freelance writer (自由撰稿人), I had no prospects at all. What I did have was a
friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn't even
matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual
typewriter and felt like a genuine writer. After a year or so,
however, I still hadn't gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard
to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I
had dreamed about it for years. I wasn't going to be one of those people who die
wondering. What if? I would keep putting my dream to the test even though it
meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the shadowland of
hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.
