填空题Sharon Hill: When the fire began I was on the fourth floor. I smelled the smoke, panicked and ran to the staircase. I was already in flames. I looked for a fire escape but there wasn't one. So I climbed through a window and down a drainpipe. I was lucky to escape. The place was a death trap. No sooner had I come out of the drainpipe than I heard the fire engines whistling in. It was too late. The hotel was completely on fire then. I saw some guests jumping out of the hotel windows. People were crying and shouting. That was a terrible scene.Tom Bell: There was a complete lack of safety precautions. I was shocked. The building should never been used as a hotel. There were no tire escapes or emergency exits. None of the regulations were adhered to. The only staircase was made of wood. There wasn't even an alarm system. I've never seen such a badly designed building. The hotel management has been negligent, as my assessment makes this quite clear. The hotel was without any form of lire-prevention. It wouldn't have cost much to install a lire escape, an alarm system and a few fire extinguishers. If they had taken these precautions this tragedy wouldn't have happened. Their negligence has resulted in the deaths of 31 people and great suffering to hundred more. They will be held responsible and will have to pay compensation to all those people.Frieda Corbett: I certainly do not accept responsibility. I did not start the lire. I suggest you find the idiot who left a lighted cigarette on his bed and ask him why he did such a daft thing. This hotel was built with the knowledge and approval of the City Planning Department. If they thought the design was bad they should have told us then. Making safety regulations is their job, not mine.Harry Bright: This hotel was built 20 year ago. Safety standards were much lower then. It should have been inspected — it should have been closed — five years ago when the regulations were tightened, but it wasn't. Our office deals mainly with new buildings and we have neither the time to inspect, nor the right to close unsafe old buildings like this one. I hope that as a result of the tragedy, the Government will decide to create special lire department, with powers to close all hotels, theatres and other public buildings which don't satisfy the latest safety standards. It must be done soon. Otherwise, I will resign.James Hurst: Who is responsible for this tragedy? The idiot who started the fire? The hotel owners who were too stingy to pay for some alterations which would have prevented the tragedy? The city office which allowed the hotel to be built in the first place and failed to inspect it afterwards? They must all share the responsibility. But what really worries me is that there are probably thousands of other hotels just like this one. The Government must make strict new safety regulations and make sure that every hotel in the country is inspected. Hotel owners who deliberately ignore the regulations should be punished severely. Now match each of the persons (61 to 65) to the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements. Statements[A] The hotel guest who started fire should be held responsible, not me, the manageress.[B] As the head of The City Planning Department, I will resign as a result of the tragedy.[C] We should urge the Government to take more strict measures to prevent things like this from happening again.[D] Fire engines should come as early as possible to save people in fire.[E] A new department should be set up and should be given more power so that it can deal with such problems.[F] As the chief of the local fire brigade, I inspected the hotel and the bad design of the building without any safety precaution shocked me.[G] I was one of the guests in file hotel who were lucky enough to survive.

填空题 Lisa: Sometimes I think that successful marriages are an endangered societal species. It seems as though every time I turn around, another couple I know is getting divorced. It's a shame because marriage is very important. I believe that if people put more effort into making their marriages work, there would be fewer divorces. Marriage takes certain qualities to make it a success, such as responsibility and a sense of humor. If partners all understand this, more happy marriages will be maintained. Elizabeth: One thing I think that is important to a successful marriage is that you should not always think of yourself. My husband and I have stayed happily for about ten years. He makes me want to do things for him because of his generous nature. I know there are many times he would rather be reading, relaxing, or working on the car, but he only does something for himself when all the household chores are done and the kids have been taken care of. In return, I bake him all his favorite home-made cakes and cookies and try to go out of my way to do special things for him. I feel very fortunate to have married him. Catherine: My husband is my best friend, with whom I share most of my thought. We find it easy to talk about most things, so we don't have many secrets from each other. When my mother makes him upset, he tells me about it. Things like that are easier to deal with when they're out in the open than when they're kept inside. Thus, we have a very open, comfortable relationship. Rose: I feel sorry for what my divorced friends have lost. No matter bow earnestly the former spouses try to "keep in touch", no matter how generous the visiting privileges for the parent who does not win custody of the children, the continuity of their lives has been broken. The years they spent together have been cut off from the rest of their lives; they are an isolated memory, no more integral to their past than a snapshot. Betty: The very first trick to a happy marriage is to be a person of yourself who does not imagine a husband is necessary to make you magically complete Successful partnerships are not between those who cannot live without each other, but between those who can live with each other. There is no room even in daydreams for the stupid idea that there is on earth only one mate intended for another. Now match each of the persons (61 to 65) to the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements.Statements[A] Being unselfish is very important to make a marriage work[B] Being able to communicate makes our marriage happy.[C] Being a person of independence leads to a successful marriage.[D] Divorced people will live an incomplete life[E] Marriage is the result of extended love.[F] Divorce results from a lack of responsibility and a sense of humor.[G] Divorces can be avoided.

填空题Ankita Agarwal: Your article made me ashamed. I've always thought of myself as not the typical self-absorbed teenager, but I guess I was wrong. While I sit in my large, warm and cozy house, wishing for the shoes and clothes I see in teen magazines, there are people in the world wishing for something as simple as clean water. Thank you for reminding me about people who would be more than happy with what I have. Janet Tejada: What about the relationship between population, consumption and resources? After all, poverty, most simply defined, is not having enough resources. The steady growth of the global population, overconsumption of resources by developed nations such as the U. S. , and increasing levels of consumption among the growing middle class in many developing nations ensure that there is ever less of the planet's already dwindling resources to go around. Tadaship Kawabe: Extreme poverty is so tragic. Sudden natural disasters like an earthquake mobilize a large number of people and money for a short period of time, while the slow but massive wave of poverty and death in Africa doesn't attract the world's attention in the same way. When we try to help those affected by disasters and extreme poverty, however, we shouldn't focus on the overwhelming number of the dead but simply try to do something good for others. Jane Thomas: The poor should be trained to organize, set priorities and develop skills and resources to put their own community plans into action. What your article proposes is the conventional top-down way for doing things: outsiders determine the priorities and solutions, then throw money at them. To actually help, we must first develop our own skills and understanding. We need to find out what the poor want and" what the root causes of the problems are. We have to listen to poor people. Sanjay Kathe: Concerned and sensible people's endeavors to reduce poverty in underdeveloped countries are deserving of high praise. It is sad, however, that only a small part of the funds raised for the pool actually reach them. The generous people who donate money to reduce poverty would be more successful if they spent time in the poor nations to check first-hand the use of their funds. Now match the name of each person (61 to 65) to the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements.Statements[A] What we should do is to help the poor help themselves.[B] I have always been deeply grieved by the tragic disasters.[C] The root of poverty lies in the unfair distribution of resources.[D] The situation in Africa has been overlooked by the world.[E] The use of donated funds should be put under strict control.[F] People living in prosperity should cherish what they have.[G] It's our duty to end global poverty.

填空题Marvin Burnham We are in an energy crisis and we will have to do something quickly. Fossil fuels are rapidly running out. The tragedy is that fossil fuels are far too valuable to waste on the production of electricity. Just think of all the things you can make from oil! If we don't start thinking ways to face the problem, it will be too late.Catherine Woodstock Instead of burning fossil fuels we should be concentrating on more economic uses of electricity, because electricity can be produced from any source of energy. We can do research on solar energy, wind power, wave power, tidal power, hydroelectric schemes etc; otherwise, our fossil fuels will run out, and we'll all freeze or starve to death. We really won't survive unless we start working on cleaner, safer sources of energy.Michael Parkhurst In the past, we consumed too much energy. If we didn't waste so much energy, our resources would last longer. You can save more energy by conservation than you can produce for the same money. Unless everyone realize the seriousness of energy crisis and stop wasting, our resources will not support us for long.Charles Wicks I don't agree with some of the estimates of world energy reserves. More oil and gas is being discovered all the time. If we listened to the pessimists, none of us would sleep at night. In the short term, we can still rely on the fossil fuels—oil, coal and gas. Researches are going on and new sources of energy will be found in the future. So there is nothing to worry about.Jennifer Hughes Some people think nuclear power is away to solve the problem, but think of the potential danger of it. There is no perfect machine. I mean, why do aeroplanes crash? Machines fail. People make mistakes. What would happen if there were a serious nuclear accident? And an accident must be inevitable—sooner or later. Huge areas would be evacuated, and they could remain contaminated with radioactivity for years. If it happened in your area, you wouldn't get a penny in compensation. No insurance company covers nuclear risks. Radioactivity causes cancer and may affect future generations, too. Now match each of the schools to the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements.[A] We should take steps to solve the problem.[B] Saving the present resources is the most important thing.[C] Nuclear power is an ideal alternative.[D] We should develop alternative sources of power.[E] I'm optimistic about the future of energy.[F] Nuclear power is not secure.[G] Energy crisis is inevitable.

填空题Jenise: The good aspect of death penalty is that fear of death stops people from committing crimes. Besides, it guarantees that those who are really dangerous will neither commit their crimes again nor pass on undesirable hereditary (世袭的) traits (品性) to their children. In this way it protects society from many dangerous happenings.Lee: But any fear of the capital punishment is greatly reduced by the decrease in the number of jurisdictions (司法) using it, by the uncertainty of detection (侦探), the long delays in court procedures, the decline in the number of executions, and by the nonpublic nature of executions. Statistical studies indicate that the use of the death penalty has no significant effect on either the frequency of capital crimes or the safety of law-enforcement officers.Hoke: By attaching this penalty to certain crimes, the law exerts a positive moral influence in the educational process. By strongly stigmatizing (打烙印) these acts, the law helps to develop attitudes of disgust and even horror for them.Nyby: The Criminal should die because he has committed a horrible crime, and only his execution will satisfy the public and prevent it from taking the law into its own hands. It's fair for those victims, especially for those who were killed by them. There is no substitute for the death penalty in giving retribution (惩罚) its maximum effectiveness. Without it, the criminals may soon come to see no difference between the breaking of a window and the fracturing (使破裂) of another's skull (脑壳)Robin: The universal desire for revenge must be stopped an regulated in modern society by legal retribution if order is to be maintained. Retribution functions interrelatedly with reformation and deterrence, both of which must be expressed in terms of society's moral code. The principal function of retribution is to support this code and thus help unify (统一) society against those who violate it. Now match each of the persons (61 to 65) to the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements.Statements[A] Death penalty functions as a means of education.[B] Death penalty is a kind of revenge.[C] Social security is bettered by death penalty.[D] Revenge should not be perceived as deserved punishment.[E] Capital punishment cannot prevent crimes.[F] Criminals deserve being killed if killed other people.[G] Criminals can always escape death penalty.

填空题Erum Nadeem: Your article on happiness lifted my spirits. There is one very interesting aspect to note: the eight steps to happiness listed on pages 32 to 33 may as well be translations of the values of our cultural tradition. If people would see our values from these aspects, there would be no misunderstanding — only happiness. Sander Tideman: I applaud your special on the science of happiness. However, the issue would have been more complete had it mentioned the idea of viewing economic development policies in the context of "gross national happiness" or GNH. This concept is based on the recognition that gross national product does not accurately reflect the well-being of a nation. GNH is a bold idea with far-reaching effects. Since happiness has a scientific base, it can be developed and promoted on a larger social scale. Paul Aboh: Happiness is a gift, not a commodity. Even the poor have the ability to cultivate and share happiness. We can find pleasure in the small things we often take for granted — a smile, a helping hand, a kiss, a wave, a pat on the back, a glass of water and a promise kept. And when you discover its source, you know it. Sometimes happiness overflows, but it never destroys. Mansoor Malik: Happiness is not a product of achievement or wealth or fame. It is the reaction of our mind to the environment. Faith in the values of our long-cherished cultural tradition is a source of well-being. Happiness comes from caring for others and giving whatever we can — help, hope, love, respect, sympathy, or just a smile. Peter Fischer: At a time when there seem to be so many reasons for being unhappy, I appreciated your special report on happiness. Surely the poorest kids in Africa who are without parents and are often hungry are the ones with the most reasons to be unhappy. What can possibly make them smile? As your article pointed out, however, we cannot wait for enough friends or a lot of money to make us happy. We have an amazing capacity to set ourselves right. Statements[A] A rich person is not necessarily happy.[B] Things people often overlook may be the very source of happiness.[C] Happiness can be promoted on a scientific basis.[D] We should mainly rely on ourselves for happiness.[E] Happiness lies in giving instead of taking.[F] The environment is a source of happiness.[G] Happiness can be achieved if we stick to the best of our values.

填空题 Manhattan: Manhattan was founded in 1624 as New Netherland. Though it is the smallest in area, at present it is the most important of the boroughs. It has the greatest concentration of business, finance, and entertainment. Brooklyn: Brooklyn was founded in 1646 as the little Dutch village of Breuckelen. Today Brooklyn is the second largest borough in area and the most populous. Brooklyn sometimes is called the borough of homes and churches. But it is also an indispensable port. Almost half of New York City's foreign trade is handled at Brooklyn's busy waterfront. Much of the city's heavy industry is located in Brooklyn. The borough is one of the largest manufacturing centers in the United States. Queens: Queens was founded in 1645 at Vlissingen (today called Flushing). It is the largest borough in area. Queens is one of the city's most popular residential areas. The borough is important because of its concentration of railroads and heavy industry in the Long Island City area. New York City's main airports—John F. Kennedy International and La Guardia—are in Queens. The Bronx: The Bronx began as Jonas Bronck's farm in 1641. The Bronx, the second smallest borough in area, is largely residential, although many industries have grown up near the East and Harlem rivers. Staten Island: Staten Island was first called Staaten Eylandt. It began in 1661 with a village called Oude Dorp. This island borough, in New York Bay, was formerly called Richmond. With an area of about 157 square kilometers, its population is the smallest of those of the five boroughs. Staten Island is growing fast; but many small homes and even some farms are still found there. Although the island is mainly residential, many industries are grown up in its Northern section. 填空题Paul Smith: Hello, everyone. Today let's talk about study performance. Perhaps you are an average student with average intelligence that you will never become a top student. This is not necessarily the case, however. In my opinion, our concentration on studies is of most importance to us. Concentrating on our studies, everyone is likely to be a top student without additional work. Now it's for each of you to discuss how we manage it. Carol: From my personal experience, the planning of time is of the greatest importance. We must make a list of our weekly tasks. Then make a schedule or chart of the time. Fill in committed time such as eating, sleeping, meetings, classes, etc. Then decide on good, regular times for studying. Good planning will make you more aware of how you spend your time. Furthermore, it will enable you to plan your activities so that you have adequate time for both work and play. Siemon: As to me, it is important to develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. So don't worry excessively about a single test. Tests provide grades, but they also let us know that we need to spend more time studying, and they help make our new knowledge permanent. Laura: I do think that study place is critical in our study. A good study area is supposed to improve our study efficiency. It may be a desk or a chair at home or in the school library, but it should be comfortable, and it should not have distractions. When you begin to work, you should be able to concentrate on the subject. Davis: I think regularity matters a lot. In class, we should listen carefully to what the teacher says, go over the notes as soon as possible after class and review important points mentioned in class as well as those we remain confused about. This will help us understand the class better. If we review the notes and textbook regularly, the material will become more meaningful and you will remember it longer. Statements[A] To ensure your study efficiency, you should choose a good study area.[B] If you set your mind on your studies, you'll become a top one.[C] Regularity plays nothing more than anything in studies.[D] Regularity plays an critical role in our studies.[E] Your school performance depends on your study habits.[F] We should develop a good attitude towards tests.[G] It's important to have a good planning of our school time.

填空题 Directions Read the texts from a magazine article in which five people talked about censor and censorship. For questions 61 to 65, match each people to one of the statements (A to G) given below. A mother Just think you are in the position of a parent. Would you allow your children to read any book they wanted to without first checking its contents? Would you take our children to see any film without first finding out whether it is suitable for them? Most of you might answer "no". Then you are exercising your right as a parent to protect your children from what you consider to be undesirable influences. In other words, by acting as a censor yourself, you are admitting that there is a strong case for censorship. A driver Of course children need protection and it is the parents' responsibility to provide it. But what about adults? Aren't they old enough to decide what is good for them? Aren't they have a good sense to solve their own problems? Different people have different tastes and interests. Why bother to limit and control the way people feel and think? An actor It is disgraceful that a censor should interfere with works of art. Who is this person to ban this great book or cut that great film? No one can set himself up as a superior being. The so called censorship is no more than a few people's subjective decisions. How can they distinguish between works of art and others? A government official Where genuine works of art are concerned, modern censors are extremely liberal in their views—often far more liberal than a large section of the public. In fact, some of the books or films we permitted are even considered "inappropriate" by a part of them. And for those books, plays and films which come before the censor, I would say the great proportion of them are very far from being "works of art." A teacher Just imagine what disorder there would be if we lived in a society without laws! Like the law, censorship contributes to the common good. One of the great things that censorship does is to prevent certain people from making fat profits by corrupting the minds of others. When censorship laws are relaxed, unscrupulous people are given a license to produce almost anything in the name of "art". Society would really be the poorer if it deprived itself of the wise counsel and the restraining influence which a censor provides.StatementsA. Artistic merit is something which censors clearly recognize.B. Censorship is for the benefit of children.C. Censorship helps to maintain social order.D. Censorship is not consistent with the ideal of democracy.E. Censors do not have the right to judge works of art.F. Censorship interferes adults' freedom.G. Works of art is something beyond censors' understanding.

For example, radio waves are all around us but we can"t detect them or sense them without a radio receiver. 2 But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is not harmless to human beings and other living things. At very high levels, radiation can kill an animal or human being by killing a great number of cells in very important organs. 3 There is no level of radiation that is completely safe. If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be great. This is the case when only a few cells are hit. 4 But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reproduce themselves, you may be in trouble. They reproduce themselves in a deformed way. 5 Sometimes this does not turn up for many years. A. They can grow into cancer. B. But even the lowest levels can do serious damage. C. 填空题Dick I think cigarette smoking is highly addictive and very expensive. Especially when you're 14 and get a $9 weekly allowance. I'm in ninth grade and started smoking in sixth, the first cigarette I ever had was in fifth grade. My morn was walking our dogs and found an unopened pack that she brought home to use as an insecticide in the garden. A friend had told her that tobacco stops ants from attacking plants. Of course, when I found the pack, I took the cigarettes to my bedroom and, being the little rebel I was, lit one with matches I stole from Dad. The fact I was actually smoking made me think I was cool. But my friend Donna didn't think so. She just looked at me like I was the stupidest thing on earth. Which I probably ,as, I still smoke to this day. Benny I know it's bad to smoke, and I've tried to quit, but it's very hard since most my friends smoke too. When I started smoking regularly at the beginning fifth grade, not that many students smoked; by the and of the year, a lot were smoking. It was pretty bad. Some kids' grades went down, including mine, from skipping classes to get nicotine into their systems. Now, in ninth grade, I'm still smoking. Andrew My parents don't allow me to smoke, and often ask, "where do you buy cigarettes?" I buy them anywhere. Hardly anyone ever asks me for ID. Maybe a look 18; maybe I just put another $2.50 in the cash register. The Safeway down the street won't sell me cigarettes. Last time I went there, I stole four packs, got caught, and had to write an essay on why stealing is wrong. About five months after I started cigarettes. There's no doubt in my mind that cigarettes are a drug. Almost everyone I know started smoking before doing drugs. That has to tell you something. Bill Since I've smoked, I can hardly run around the block without getting out of breath. My mom quit smoking 18 years ago, and my dad stopped smoking 14 years ago. My mom now has cancer, and my dad has had three heart attacks. My grandma quit nine years ago, and she has emphysema. Not only that--my two grandfathers died from the results of smoking. After all this, you'd think I'd know better than to continue. Frank I can't tell that I smell of tobacco, but my parents and others can, I remember one time before I smoked, I left my jacket at a friend's house. Both her parents smoked. When I got the jacket back, I had to throw it away because it smelled like an ash-tray. So I felt sorry for those who don' t smoke and have to put up with my odor all day. When I smoke in my room at home, I hang out the window I have told my parents that I will try to stop smoking as a present to them. But I hate the thought of never having another cigarette. You see--no ifs, ands or buts--I' m really hooked. Now match each of the teenagers (16 to 20) to the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements.A. Smoking is a dangerous thing.B. Smoking is harmful to health.C. Smoking is cool.D. I began to smoke by accident.E. I began to smoke out of curiosity.F. Smoking had a bad effect on me.G. I am a heavy smoker now.

I might have endangered other divers' lives if I have spilled blood in the pool. For what I knew—that few others knew—was that I was HIV-positive. AIDS forced me to stop diving; I had to quit diving professionally after the Olympics.{{B}} Margaret Chart:{{/B}} It is reported that almost three million people in developing countries are now receiving drugs for HIV. This is an increase of almost one million people from two thousand and six. Still, the hope was to reach three million by two thousand and five. But antiretroviral therapy, or ART, alone will not solve the problem. For every two persons we manage to provide them with ART, another five persons get infected. So again, we cannot underestimate the power of prevention.{{B}} Paula Green:{{/B}} The disease robs the body of its natural defenses against infections. Almost seventy-five percent of people receiving HIV drugs are in Africa. The drugs help patients live longer without developing AIDS. An estimated nine million seven hundred thousand people in low and middle income countries were in need of HIV treatment last year. However, by the end of the year, just over thirty percent of them were getting it.{{B}} Raymond Chow:{{/B}} Price reductions can be a main method to let more people with HIV, including more pregnant women, receive the drugs. Also, delivery systems should be redesigned to better serve individual countries and smaller health centers. And treatments should be simpler than in the past.{{B}} William Wang:{{/B}} Huge barriers still remain in dealing with the AIDS epidemic. Getting patients to stay on their therapy is difficult. There are still large numbers of people who do not get tested for HIV. And there are many others who get tested too late and die within months. What's more, there is not enough joint treatment of HIV and the related infections that most often kill AIDS patients. And still another problem is the shortage of health care workers in the developing world. Now match each of the items (61 to 65) to the appropriate statement. Note: There are two extra statements.{{B}} Statements{{/B}} [A] Some HIV-positive patients don't cooperate with doctors. [B] AID patient's blood may be dangerous to other people's lives. [C] People are scared of AIDS. [D] Treatment is more urgent than prevention. [E] Many people can't get HIV drugs because of poverty. [F] More people get HIV treatment, but even more get infected. [G] HIV drugs should be cheaper.
