填空题Mike:
Praise often and sincerely—it"s as simple as that. Employees want to feel needed and appreciated. By offering sincere praise with examples about what they did right, you"ll go far in creating an energetic team. Meanwhile, I don"t agree with the assertion that "to focus on what needs improving isn"t good management." In fact, it"s the balance of praise along with constructive criticism that drives employees to work smarter and reach higher.
Frank:
This article makes a valid point that needs to be understood, especially for the new generation of workers, my generation. We don"t see ourselves as parts in the machine to be put in the dark to work. My generation needs respect in return from our employer, we need to feel appreciated beyond just a pay check, it"s the difference between being fulfilled at our career and being sad at our job.
Joyce:
One skill missing in today"s workplace is the ability to build effective business relationships. At the core of that relationship is the need for consistent feedback. "How am I doing?" is a question that should be answered consistently. When you tell an employee once a year what is needed to improve, you have not done your job as a leader—build skills, provide feedback and help the employee grow and develop.
Ellen:
I don"t see a problem with praising employees when it"s truly deserved (insincere praise is an entirely different story). It"s a cost-free "benefit", if you will, in that it allows employees to see that their efforts are both noticed and valued. In the work world there are always people available to tell that you are doing something wrong and far too few occasions when employees are told that they"ve done something right!
Diana:
Praise what the employee did. Be specific about why it was helpful. An employee who continually earns your praise also deserves your attention as to how else to reward their behavior. Meaningful praise encourages people beyond anything else. Written comments are available for later review. They give them confidence that they can "do it again." I never regretted praising an employee who deserved it but often kicked myself for missing an opportunity.
Now match the name of each person (36 to 40) to the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements.
Statements
A. Praise combined with criticism is helpful.
B. Praise can bring about many kinds of desired behavior.
C. Employees may feel it hard to accept insincere praise.
D. Let employees know exactly for what they are praised.
E. In my opinion, we are not generous enough to give praise.
F. Employees need helpful advice on a regular basis.
G. Money alone cannot guarantee a sense of career fulfillment for me.

填空题Mr. Mike Smith: It wasn't an easy decision, but we've been asking for a decent wage for years. Now at las people are beginning to listen to us. We' re only asking for a 25 percent increase in our wages. 250 dollars a week, that's all. It's a pity so many people have to be inconvenienced by our strike. Bu please don't blame us. Blame the government for refusing our claim. Mr. Tom Brown: It' s totally unreasonable to demand so much money when we are trying desperately to control inflation. If wages go up ,so do prices. If we gave in to the electricity workers, all the other unions would want more, with the inevitable result that the crisis would become uncontrollable. What we' re trying to impress upon everybody is that inflation hurts everybody, especially the poor people. We offer the electricity workers a 10 percent increase. And that' s already too much. My stand at this meeting will be to persuade the Union to see reason. Mr. Bob Davis: Everybody will be hurt by this strike, including the electricity workers themselves. The economy will be destroyed and many people will lose their jobs. Already people are saying that the big unions have too much power and shouldn't be allowed to strike. Of course the electricity workers want to get more money. Don't we all? Mrs. Baker. My opinion is "Get the Army in". All the power stations should be managed by the army. The strikers should be thrown into prison. That' s what this country needs. Why must we all suffer just because a few men are greedy? If they don't like their jobs, nobody' s forcing them to work. They should try and live on 50 dollars a week like I have to. Perhaps they' d keep their mouths shut then. Miss Slater: Let's face it. It's neither here nor there. The electricity workers are in a strong position. Perhaps we can't do anything about it. What I say is: let them have their 250 dollars so we can return to work. I mean, the government wastes the taxpayers' money all the time on trivial things. How can anyone say 250 dollars is "too much"? Pop singers get more. Nurses get less. It's just one of those things. Now match each of the persons (61 to 65) to the appropriate statement. Statements[A] A 10% increase is already too much, and I'm here to persuade the Union to see reason.[B] I hope that strikes should be banned in all sectors relating to the nation' s security and stability.[C] We will never go back to work until our goals are achieved.[D] I think that the government should give in to the electricity worker' s demands.[E] I strongly suggest that all the power stations should be run by the army and that the strikers should be put into prison.[F] I must make you clear that strikes will destroy the economy and that many people will lose their jobs.[G] We are forced to call a strike because the government rejected our wage claim. Note: there are two extra statements.

填空题How English Works How English Works covers all the important elements of grammar for students of English as a foreign language, and many other topics which are often ignored. It is mainly designed for students working on their own, but can also be used in class. Unlike other grammars at this level, it is richly illustrated with drawings, cartoons, and graphs, and is printed in full colour. Many of the examples are real, and the exercises are of many different types. Oxford Guide to English Grammar The emphasis in this modern reference grammar is on meaning in the choice of grammatical pattern, and on the use of patterns in texts and conversations. Over fifty texts and dialogues, most from real sources, show patterns in context. There are also many real single-sentence examples. The book is thorough in its coverage but pays most attention to points that are of practical importance to learners. Summaries at the beginning of each chapter provide a quick survey of its content and a broad view of the grammar topic. The grammar is presented in concise sections, written in carefully controlled language. The explanations are clear, simple, and precise. Technical terms are used sparingly and are explained in a glossary. Practical English Usage Practical English Usage is a dictionary of problem points in the language for foreign learners and their teachers. It answers the learner's question, "Is this right or wrong?" and the teacher's question, "How can I explain this to my classes?" It gives information and advice that is practical, clear, reliable, and easy to find. Most of the book is about grammar, but it also covers selected points of vocabulary, idiom, style, pronunciation, and spelling. Grammar Grammar is a progressive series of four books for schools where English grammar is first taught to children from the age of about nine. It can be used to supplement any main beginner's course. The exercises progress within each chapter from easy mechanical ones, designed to establish or reinforce a grasp of forms and their use, to less structured activities which encourage students to use language creatively. This active, communicative element is unusual in books of this type. Oxford Practice Grammar Oxford Practice Grammar gives clear explanations of English grammar with exercises on the facing page which provide practice in form and use. Lots of example sentences, texts, and illustrated dialogues show how structures are used. It is the ideal reference and practice book for all students at intermediate level, whether working with a teacher or alone. Now match each book (16 to 20) to the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements. Statements[A] It is compiled in the form of questions and answers,[B] It contains a discussion of grammatical theories.[C] It contains colorful pictures.[D] It is designed on the principle of what a grammatical pattern expresses.[E] There is an outline of content at the end of each chapter.[F] For every page of grammatical explanation, there is a page of exercise facing it.[G] It is a set of books arranged according to difficulty.

填空题 Richard: In my opinion, smoking is only an amusement, like playing cards, reading, etc. Many years ago, when an adult handed me a cigarette and lit it for me, I felt grown up. When I am with friends and have nothing to say, we smoke, consequently we no longer feel embarrassed. Sometimes, I light a cigarette, suffering and nervousness vanishing with the smoke, I can't help saying inwardly: Hello, cigarette, my old friend, I'm coming to meet you again. Stanton: Many people believe smokers have the fight to smoke. But they also believe that others shouldn't have to pay a price. The risk of tobacco smoke is greater than the risk of radon gas is to non-smokers. We're talking maybe 40 percent greater. And if you're talking about all the carcinogenic air pollutants that EPA regulates, it's 100 times greater. Davis: According to our investigation, tobacco smoke in the home and workplace could be killing 46,000 non-smokers each year in the United States. That's 3, 000 lung cancer deaths, 11, 000 from other cancers and 32,000 heart disease deaths. That would make passive smoking the leading preventable cause of death in the United States after alcohol and smoking itself. Smoking kills 390,000 while alcohol 120, 000. James: Passive smoking has become the principal battleground for the tobacco industry and its opponents in the 1980s. It is no longer merely a health issue, but political and environmental. Cigarette pollution is fouling the air. According to the Environmental Protection Agency's indoor air program's result, we know that the indoor environment is far more polluted than the outdoor environment. We've seen that again and again wherever we've looked all over the United States. Winston: Sir, another fact about smoking is that cigarettes give people a good deal of pleasure. There is considerable evidence, surprisingly little publicized, showing that smoking produces certain beneficial effects in human beings. Smoking counteracts some decrease in efficiency, and smokers improve their performance in complex situations while smoking. There is also evidence showing that nicotine can produce a tranquilizing effect during high emotional and shock situations, while on the other hand stimulating concentration in tedious situations. Now match each of the items(61 to 65)to the appropriate statement Note: There are two extra statements. Statements[A] Passive smoking is the third preventable cause of death.[B] Smokers have the right to smoke.[C] Smoking produces some positive effects in some complex situations.[D] Second-hand smoke is more harmful to non-smokers than those cancer-inducing air pollutants.[E] Cigarette pollution has caused outdoor environment even worse.[F] Smoking can help people get rid of nervousness.[G] Smoking is also an environmental issue.

Glynis Davis: A childlike curiosity about the world would
definitely prevent you from being childish. This is especially important when we
gradually get used to being told about a lot of "truths" in our life. We hear
them, and we accept them without any critical thinking. Even for something
others assume to be obvious, questioning is also strongly recommended.Roz
Juma: It's not easy for us to find something that we really
wants to do, something that we would like to continue even when it is not paid
by anyone else. When this happens, it means we have found something that truly
interests us, and we definitely should not allow this interest to flee away from
us. Faced with this feeling, we have no better choice but to make up our minds
and do it.Lesley Godwin: Strive to think outside accepted
principles and habitual perspectives such as "We've always done it that way."
Just because everyone else is doing it that way, does not make it the right way
to do it. Following others' way of doing things seem to make everything so easy,
but it may cost us more time or energy when it is the best way.Ros
Langford: Take the time to daydream and ponder, because that is
often when the best ideas arise. Look for ways to relax and consciously put them
into practice. All work and no play make Jack a dull boy. If we get stuck in
thinking something for a long time, maybe a good sleep or activities such as
swimming, tennis or anything you like would help you find the way out.Julia
Minifie: Debate, if managed in a calm and friendly way, can
really give us a lot new thoughts, in a fairly short time. When we always feel
we are right, it will prevent us from getting in touch with new thoughts. No
matter we agree with these opposing opinions or not, we can benefit from them.
After you experience this, you will find it really thought-provoking and
mind-exploring. Now match each of the expert (61 to 65) to the
appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements.A. A friendly
relationship with those around us is beneficial for a creative-mind.B.
Relaxation can sometimes help us think better.C. As soon as a spark of
interest arises in something, follow it.D. Try to retain a spirit of
discovery.E. We should concentrate what we are doing, daydreaming and
pondering is not allowed.F. Communication with those holding opposite
opinions can help create new ideas.G. Intellectual courage is something that
would help us get creative.
