填空题Jack Every time you raise a hot-button issue, such as the in-laws or money, does your husband suddenly clam up? Take heart, more than 80 percent of the time, it"s the wife who brings up sticky marital issues, while the husband tries to avoid discussing them. This isn"t a symptom of a troubled marriage-it is true in most happy marriages. Lilian I watched many couples fight about one major issue. After four years , 69 percent of these successfully married couples were still fighting about the same problem. When you marry, you automatically inherit your set of unresolvable relationship problems. If you married somebody else, you"d have a different set. Patrick You"ll often hear that staying in a bad marriage is worse for everybody concerned-that getting divorced. That may be true if your home is so riddled with hostility it"s like a war zone. But I found that 75 percent of couples who rated their marriages as miserable but stayed married were happy five years later. Brandy Every couple experiences disappointment as initial romance and passion fade and they discover all their differences. He doesn"t do enough housework. She"s too emotional. He watches too much TV. She"s too lenient with the kids. We usually think the strongest marriages are those that survive major traumas, but frequently, it is those daily annoyances that eat away at a marriage. Anthony What if she is in corporate sales and he is a musician? She prizes safety and security while he longs for adventure? She loves watching football at home while he is a rover with a passion for sailing? Less resilient couples might see such dramatic differences as grounds for divorce. But paradoxically, it is this unbridled independence that holds marriage together. Now match each of the persons with the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements. Statements A. Deal with little things. B. Silence doesn"t spell trouble. C. Take a leap of faith. D. Divorce is not the best solution. E. We don"t have to solve every problem. F. Relive beautiful moments. G. Love your differences.

填空题Hadley If you smoke and you still don't believe that there's a definite link between smoking and bronchial troubles, heart disease and lung cancer, then you are certainly deceiving yourself. Just have a look at those people in hospital with these diseases and count how many of them do not smoke, you may be surprised at the number. Even these few people might be passive smokers without realizing it. Randy Tobacco is a wonderful commodity to tax. It's almost like a tax on our daily bread. In tax revenue alone, the government of Britain collects enough from smokers to pay for its entire educational facilities. So while authorities point out ever so carefully that smoking may be harmful, it does not do to shout too loudly about it. Sampson The advertising of tobacco is one of the problems. We are never shown pictures of real smokers coughing up their lungs early in the morning. That would never do. The advertisements always depict handsome, clean-shaven young men. They suggest it is manly to smoke, even positively healthy! Smoking is associated with the great open-air life, with beautiful girls, true love and togetherness. What utter nonsense! Rowley Of course tobacco can help government to raise money. However, while money is eagerly collected in vast sums with one hand, it is paid out in increasingly vaster sums with the other. Enormous amounts are spent on cancer research and on efforts to cure people suffering from the disease. Countless valuable lives are lost. In the long run, there is no doubt that everybody would be much better off if smoking were banned altogether. Bernice Smoking can provide constant consolation. When I feel worried or nervous, I just get a cigarette and everything seems to get right. After a day's hard work, the thing I want to do most is smoking. It can be even better with a cup of coffee. It's so enjoyable and relaxing that it relieves stresses of everyday life. So why bother to ban it and take pleasure from us? StatementsA. Smoking brings many psychological benefits.B. Tobacco is an important source of income to the government.C. Smoking is sure to cause diseases.D. It's a shortsighted policy to depend on tobacco for money.E. The advertisement for it is dishonest and harmful. F. The tobacco industry makes high quality advertisement for smoking.G. It's doubtful whether there is link between smoking and cancer.

填空题Read the text from a magazine article in which several people expressed their different opinions on the same issue. Please match the name of each person to one of the statements given below.Nancy Green Even though my whole family gets up really early, I have always been a night person. I find that's my best time to get work done. I like nighttime because everything is calm and I can just write. I feel calmer and more focused at night. There is no pressure. When I read my papers in the morning, I'm always amazed how good they sound. Brandi Baldasano I try to use all the small portions of time that I have available. I find that I can finish a lot in fifteen minutes, because I am able to concentrate for that long knowing I have only a few minutes. Those small units of time really add up over a week. Setting small goals seems to help me avoid feeling overwhelmed. I use my calendar as a guide, by writing down what school work I would like to accomplish each day to stay caught up. Galo Calos I'm the king of procrastination. I love to do everything at the last minute, and I really pay the price by being nervous and anxious. I always say I'll stop this pattern, but then once again, I'm up all night writing the paper or studying for the test. I try to deal with it by at least starting the assignment early, doing at least a quarter or even half of it, so I don't have to do it all the night before. Usually I do end up doing it all but I always manage to get an A or B. I guess I work well under pressure. Michael Alper As a beginning college athlete, one of my big problems was prioritizing my time and trying to balance my sport, school and friends. My big mistake was putting my sport first. In the excitement, I placed my sport as first priority, my new friends and teammates second, and my studies last. Today I have plans to go on to graduate from school and I am affected by my grades because I did not put a high enough emphasis on my classes. Babara Sequra One big challenge I face in managing time is not leaving time in my schedule for the unexpected. My days are quite full and I have others depending on me to do things at certain times. I don't give myself much spare time in my daily schedule and, in the end, that can be quite stressful. Now match each of the persons with the appropriate statement. Note:there are two extra statements. Statements A. As for me, it's never too late to learn. B. Unanticipated occurrence makes my schedule tighter. C. I admit that I am a night owl. D. I taste the bitterness from my sports fever. E. I believe that haste makes waste. F. I have the ability to deal with high pressure. G. I can make efficient use of my time.

填空题 {{B}} Lisa:{{/B}} Sometimes I think that successful marriages are an endangered societal species. It seems as though every time I turn around, another couple I know is getting divorced. It's a shame because marriage is very important. I believe that if people put more effort into making their marriages work, there would be fewer divorces. Marriage takes certain qualities to make it a success, such as responsibility and a sense of humor. If partners all understand this, more happy marriages will be maintained.{{B}} Elizabeth:{{/B}} One thing I think that is important to a successful marriage is that you should not always think of yourself. My husband and I have stayed happily for about ten years. He makes me want to do things for him because of his generous nature. I know there are many times he would rather be reading, relaxing, or working on the car, but he only does something for himself when all the household chores are done and the kids have been taken care of. In return, I bake him all his favorite home-made cakes and cookies and try to go out of my way to do special things for him. I feel very fortunate to have married him.{{B}} Catherine:{{/B}} My husband is my best friend, with whom I share most of my thought. We find it easy to talk about most things, so we don't have many secrets from each other. When my mother makes him upset, he tells me about it. Things like that are easier to deal with when they're out in the open than when they're kept inside. Thus, we have a very open, comfortable relationship.{{B}} Rose:{{/B}} I feel sorry for what my divorced friends have lost. No matter bow earnestly the former spouses try to "keep in touch", no matter how generous the visiting privileges for the parent who does not win custody of the children, the continuity of their lives has been broken. The years they spent together have been cut off from the rest of their lives; they are an isolated memory, no more integral to their past than a snapshot.{{B}} Betty:{{/B}} The very first trick to a happy marriage is to be a person of yourself who does not imagine a husband is necessary to make you magically complete Successful partnerships are not between those who cannot live without each other, but between those who can live with each other. There is no room even in daydreams for the stupid idea that there is on earth only one mate intended for another.{{I}} Now match each of the persons (61 to 65) to the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements.{{/I}}{{B}}Statements{{/B}}[A] Being unselfish is very important to make a marriage work[B] Being able to communicate makes our marriage happy.[C] Being a person of independence leads to a successful marriage.[D] Divorced people will live an incomplete life[E] Marriage is the result of extended love.[F] Divorce results from a lack of responsibility and a sense of humor.[G] Divorces can be avoided.

填空题Anusit Kundakorn : A United Nations agency is pressing Thailand to let more than 50 ethnic Uighurs travel to Turkey, instead of sending them to China. The secretary general of Thailand"s National Security Council has been attempting to ease fears over China"s treatment of the returned Uighurs. This week, Anusit Kundakorn went to the detention center in Xinjiang where the 109 Uighurs are being held. He told Thai reporters that they are living in good conditions. He called the camp "clean and neat". Thai officials have been negotiating with both China and Turkey for more than a year. The talks were launched after more than 350 Uighurs were found in hiding in Thailand. About 180 Uighurs, mostly women and children, were sent to Turkey after receiving legal immigration documents. Turkey often provides such documents to Uighurs because of cultural links to the ethnic minority and claims that Uighur Muslims face persecution in China. But more than 50 Uighnrs remain at a Bangkok immigration detention center. Vivian Tan : Vivian Tan is with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. She says the Thai government should give the group permission to travel freely. "Well, basically, UNHCR has appealed to the government of Thailand to refrain from deporting people forcibly in (the) future. We"re urging the government to allow people who are still here (in Thailand) to depart voluntarily to a place where the government is willing to receive them." Benjamin Zawacki : Benjamin Zawacki is a human rights advocate and lawyer. He says Thailand failed to let international organizations examine the cases of the Uighur refugees before sending them to China. The Uighurs in Thailand have denied that they are from China. They instead claim that they are from Turkey. Turkish officials have visited them and provided them with legal travel documents to enter Turkey. But Thai officials have delayed the process because of pressure from China. Niran Pitakwatchara : Commissioner Niran Pitakwatchara said processing future refugee claims must be based on human rights values. He also said that the more than 50 Uighurs still in Thailand should be sent to Turkey. 填空题Paula: The future is determined by the actions of the present day. The responsibility we have for the future begins when we recognize that we ourselves create the future—that the future is not something imposed upon us by fate or other forces beyond our control. We ourselves build the future both through what we do and what we do not do. Mrs. John: The future will see more unbelievable things. In the future, people will be able to predict their performance from the strength of the brain's electrical activity. Doctor Kramer has found that the strength of the brain's electrical activity can be measured through the scalp (头皮). Bosses could measure brain activity through the scalp and tell whether a worker is performing well, working hard, or too tired to do the job properly. Mary: In the new century, things around us will be more fascinating. The chemical element in the heart is said to increase your desire for fat, when is stimulated. This means that disturbances of this chemical gelatin can lead to overeating. Doctor Sarah Leibowits presented an academic paper suggesting that the appetite for fat rich food can be controlled through drugs that block the effects of gelatin. Judy: In the future our life will change dramatically. It is quite certain that computers will play an important part in our life. You will visit your doctor, and find that he uses a computer screen and visual information about your condition, instead of his text books. Computers in your home will enable you to answer interactive questions about your health and show the alternative results which will affect you if you act in a certain way. Carrie: In the future, computers will change the way the doctors diagnose and treat their patients. Also doctors will change their traditional notion of medicine. Although pills for tension, heart conditions, being overweight and other life threatening conditions are prescribed by western doctors, most doctors now require patients to focus on healthy way of living by changing diets and doing more exercise as a means to keep fit. 填空题 {{B}} Liu:{{/B}} To me, work is first and my child is second. I work more for myself than for my child because it's the only way to be economically independent. Otherwise, I may some day lose everything, even my child. I can give for the sake of my daughter but never at the cost of my career. Only after I achieve value through work can it be possible for me to raise my baby. I resumed working after a short maternity (产妇的) leave. Now my daughter goes to kindergarten while I am at work; I think that is her first step into society.{{B}} Liang:{{/B}} Nowadays, economic independence is particularly important to women. The only way to realize self-value is through work. I believe women should first live as a social entity (实体), then as a mother. And there are facts to show that women are not inferior to men in the working world. Child is just another part of my life, it would be impossible to make her my whole life. I think I will also get a nanny(保姆) to lend me a hand.{{B}} Yao:{{/B}} When women make their career as their final pursuit, I think they lose their natural maternal instincts. I hope my wife will put most of her energy and time on child care and family. Because she gives birth to the child, she can do a much better job than the father in understanding the child. The mother should be the main educator while father works as her assistant.{{B}} Wang:{{/B}} Women are naturally fit for human reproduction while men are meant for material production. Married women must assume the role of full-time mothers if their financial situation permits it; and a woman's value is only realized after she has successfully raised her child.{{B}} Zhao:{{/B}} Although we may say women's talents lie in being mothers, we should admit that women do not sacrifice their families for work and they are not expected to give up a chance for a career.
