单选题The advantages and disadvantages of a large population have long been a subject of discussion among economists. It has been argued that the supply of good land is limited. To food a large population, inferior land must be cultivated and the good land worked intensively. Thus, each person produces less and this means a lower average income than could be obtained with a smaller population. Other economists have argued that large population gives more scope for specialization and the development of facilities(便利设施) such as ports, roads and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to justify them. One of the difficulties in carrying out a worldwide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability of food and raw materials. In the developing country where a vastly expanded population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources. It will be the first concern of government to place a limit on the birthrate, whatever the consequences may be. In a highly industrialized society the problem may be more complex. A decreasing birthrate may lead to unemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured goods. When the pressure of population on housing declines, prices also decline and the building industry is weakened. Faced with considerations such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than un which is stable or in decline.

单选题 Text From childhood to old age, we all use language as a means of broadening our knowledge of ourselves and the world about us. When humans first (26) , they were like newborn children, unable to use this (27) tool. Yet once language developed, the possibilities for human kinds future (28) and cultural growth increased. Many linguists believe that evolution is (29) for our ability to produce and use language. They (30) that our highly evolved brain provides us (31) an innate language ability not found in lower (32) . Proponents of this innateness theory say that our (33) for language is inborn, but that language itself develops gradually, (34) a function of the growth of the brain during childhood. Therefore there are critical (35) times for language development. Current (36) of innateness theory are mixed, however, evidence supporting the existence of some innate abilities is undeniable. (37) , more and more schools are discovering that foreign languages are best taught in (38) grades. Young children often can learn several languages by being (39) to them, while adults have a much harder time learning another language once the (40) of their first language have become firmly fixed. (41) some aspects of language are undeniably innate, language does not develop automatically in a vacuum. Children who have been (42) from other human beings do not possess language. This demonstrates that (43) with other human beings is necessary for proper language development. Some linguists believe that this is even more basic to human language (44) than any innate capacities. These theorists view language as imitative, learned behavior. (45) , children learn language from their parents by imitating them. Parents gradually shape their child's language skills by positively reinforcing precise imitations and negatively reinforcing imprecise ones.

单选题{{B}}Text 3{{/B}} One of the best-known proverbs must be "early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise." The promises of health, wealth, and wisdom to those who join the ranks of the early retires and risers must be particularly appealing to many people in our contemporary society. There is no doubt that one of the greatest concerns of modern man is his health. It is estimated that in the United States $ 200 billion are spent on health care each year. The medical field has grown into such a big business that it employs 4.8 million people, and it appears that in many places, more staff is needed to meet the demands of the people who are concerned about their physical well-being. Much more interest has been shown in preventive medicine in recent years. This is probably due in part to the increasing costs of medical treatment, but the writings of such people as Dr. Keneth Cooper have also played an important role. In his book Aerobics. Dr. Cooper communicated his message of the benefits of exercise so effectively that many other authors have flowed in his trail, and literally millions of readers have put on their sports shoes and taken to the highways and byways of America. A recent survey showed that over 17 million people are jogging. Many of these are so serious that they have trained themselves to run the 26 miles and 385 yards of the hard and tiring marathons that are sponsored all over the country. The last time I was in Honolulu, I was amazed to see hundreds of people, young and old, running for their lives, and I discovered many of them have run in the Hawaiian Marathon. Exercise has also become a major part of conversation. A1 a dinner party recently, the president of a bank asked me, "You look like a runner; how far do you run each day?" A few days later when I appeared on a national television show, the host suddenly asked me if I was a regular runner. On both occasions the conversation turned to the subject of exercise and I found, as I have found whenever I have traveled recently, that this is a subject on many people's minds. Of course, there are still many people who are less than enthusiastic about exercise. They appreciate the philosophy of Robert M. Hutchins who said, "Whenever the thought of exercise occurs to me, I lie down till it passes."
