问答题In his autobiography, Darwin himself speaks of
his intellectual powers with extraordinary modesty. He points out
that he always experienced much difficulty in expressing himself
clearly and concisely, but {{U}} {{U}} 1 {{/U}}
{{/U}}{{U}}he believes that this very difficulty may have had the compensating
advantage of forcing him to think long and intently about every sentence, and
thus enabling him to detect errors in reasoning and in his own observations.{{/U}}
He disclaimed the possession of any great quickness of apprehension or wit, such
as distinguished Huxley. {{U}} {{U}} 2 {{/U}} {{/U}}{{U}}He
asserted, also, that his power to follow a long and purely abstract train of
thought was very limited, for which reason he felt certain that he never could
have succeeded with mathematics.{{/U}} His memory, too, he described as
extensive, but hazy. So poor in one sense was it that he never could remember
for more than a few days a single date or a line of poetry. {{U}} {{U}}
3 {{/U}} {{/U}}{{U}}On the other hand, he did not accept as well founded
the charge made by some of his critics that, while he was a good observer, he
had no power of reasoning.{{/U}} This, he thought, could not be true, because the
Origin of Species is one long argument from the beginning to the end, and has
convinced many able men. No one, he submits, could have written it without
possessing some power of reasoning. He was Willing to assert that "I have a fair
share of invention, and of common sense or judgment, such as every fairly
successful lawyer or doctor must have, but not, I believe, in any higher degree.
" {{U}} {{U}} 4 {{/U}} {{/U}}{{U}}He adds humbly that perhaps he
was "superior to the common run of men in noticing things which easily escape
attention, and in observing them carefully. "{{/U}} Writing in
the last year of his life, he expressed the opinion that in two or three
respects his mind had changed during the preceding twenty or thirty years. Up to
the age of thirty or beyond it poetry of many kinds gave him great pleasure.
Formerly, too, pictures had given him considerable, and music very great,
delight. In 1881, however, he said: "Now for many years I cannot endure to read
a line of poetry. I have also almost lost my taste for pictures or music. "
{{U}} {{U}} 5 {{/U}} {{/U}}{{U}}Darwin was convinced that the loss
of these tastes was not only a loss of happiness, but might possibly be
injurious to the intellect, and more probably to the moral character.{{/U}}
问答题A continuing phenomenon in business education is the emphasis on ethics. The American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) accreditation standards emphasize the need for an ethical awareness along with an understanding of "influence of political, social, legal and regulatory, environmental, and technological issues..." 61)
One of the difficult ethical challenges it wants addressed concerns "inclusiveness," which we have interpreted to mean a "large umbrella" approach, in, for example, employee concerns.
To this end, matters such as sexual preference are dealt with in a case involving a supervisor. 62)
Possibly the greatest ethical idea that could build bridges in an increasingly fragmented society is the idea that empirical evidence must be sought and used to bring an agreement in controversial public issues.
Clearly the greatest impact upon the business enterprise evidencing external political and social environments occurs with respect to law. Law is the way in which society and the political process translating into concrete form the forces shaping the business environment. Perhaps the most important development is the recognition that positive law has become the ethic of our time. 63)
A key reason for this is the highly competitive nature of the business environment, where international competitors are threatening the very existence of the domestic U. S. businesses;
this competition forces U. S. businesses to take a "bare bones," "do just what the law requires and no more" approach to ethics. Actually, the U. S. legal system is for more than a" bare bones" to legal rights. 64)
In fact, it could persuasively be argued that law in this nature has crept into the realm of natural law and norms formerly described by private decision makers are now decreed by legislative commands.
It is true that ethics involves doing the "right" thing, the just thing, the morally correct thing; however, positive law is now
commanding
us to "do the right thing." Given the need to keep costs under control, most U. S. businesses give a sigh of relief and say, "This is enough ethics for me; thanks," if they can simply comply with the pervasive positive law. These businesses point out that their foreign competitors do not have the extensive—and expensive—protective labor laws, the Clean Water Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, and a host of other laws. 65)
These laws have praiseworthy goals; nonetheless, they make competing with businesses in other countries without such laws difficult, if not impossible, particularly when costs are taken into account.

Qixi Festival, the Chinese equivalent of Valentine"s Day that fell yesterday, was not only a disappointment for forgotten lovers, but also for businessmen left with empty pockets.
The cold reception has prompted cultural experts to seriously worry that the lovers" festival, marked for generations since the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), is dying out. Some have even called for legislation to make the festival a legal "Chinese Lovers" Day", which falls on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar year.
But the effectiveness of such a measure is in doubt, although efforts to preserve traditional festivals are highly commendable.
A growing number of traditional Chinese festivals, such as the Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival, share the same fate as the Qixi Festival.
Young people are showing less interest in traditional culture as symbolized by these festivals. Even if all traditional festivals are finally made legal, the risk of them becoming purely formalized celebrations with little meaning is not removed. If the younger generation fails to identify with the cultural significance of these holidays, there is little that can be done.
While complaining about traditional festivals" fading appeal, decision-makers should reflect on cultural protection. Undeniably our country has done a bad job of preserving culture and traditional festivals, compared to neighboring Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK).
The 2,500-year-old Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. The traditional customs and rituals of the occasion, which originated in China, have been better preserved in the ROK.
Only a few years ago did China begin to realize the significance of preserving intangible cultural heritage when the ROK planned to apply to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to list its version of the Dragon Boat Festival as an important example of intangible culture.
