单选题Some people ought to defend the workaholic. These people are unjustly accused, abused, and defamed — often, termed sick or morbid or on the border of pathology. About 30% of American business and commerce is carried on the shoulders of workaholics. The ratio might exist in art and science too. Workaholics are the achievers, the excelers. There is a national conspiracy against excellence and undue admiration of commonness and mediocrity. It is as if we are against those who make uncommon sacrifices because they enjoy doing something. Some famous psychologists say that the workaholic has an inferiority complex which leads to over-compensation. This is certainly not the case. Inferiority, or low esteem, describes laziness more accurately than it describes dedication. We do not seem to realize that very little excellence is achieved by living a well-balanced life. Edison, Ford, Einstein, Freud all had single-minded devotion to work whereby they sacrificed many things, including family and friendship. The accusation is made that workaholics bear guilt by not being good parents or spouses. But guilt can exist in the balanced life also. Think how many "normal" people and middle-ages who have never done anything well — they are going to settle for less than what they could have become.

单选题Former England international football player Alan Shearer says there needs to be a zero tolerance policy to anyone found guilty of fixing in football matches. Six people were arrested on Sunday over fixing, allegations in the sport and have been bailed until April. "You are never going to stop betting but you have to stop the people inside," Shearer said, "It just cannot happen. If anyone is found guilty then there should be zero tolerance." Blackburn striker DJ Campbell was one of six people questioned by police in connection with fixing in football matches. The arrests were made following a story in The Sun Newspaper on Sunday in which Portmouth ex-player Sam Sodje told an undercover reporter he could arrange yellow and red cards in exchange for cash. Following the allegations, the government"s Culture Secretary Maria Miller called a meeting with leaders from football, cricket, horse racing, rugby league and rugby union. Football Association general secretary Alex Home said it was "a very positive meeting". He added: "The intelligence that we have is that this isn"t a wide-scale issue at the moment but we really welcome the impetus behind the National Crime Agency, it"s going to be a really important body for all of us in reminding people that these are criminal activities and that the criminal nature of these activities shouldn"t be underestimated." Staines Town manager Marcus Gayle, a former striker for Wimbledon when they were in the top flight, says match-fixers approached one of his players. "I was disgusted that it is still around in the game," he said, "We"ve had a recent incident in an approach towards our club and a player but we had to do the fight thing. We reported it less than 24 hours. When it was indicated to me that something had gone on, my call was to the chief executive to say that we need to report this to the authorities as soon as possible as we don"t want any blemish on us as a club." In a separate investigation, the NCA is examining claims that an international betting syndicate was involved in match-fixing. Four people, including two Conference South players, have been charged with fixing-related offences as part of that investigation. It runs one of five schemes being funded by the European Commission to raise awareness of the issue, while it is working with leagues in six countries—including in the United Kingdom—to develop and pilot education programs.

单选题It was not "the comet of the century" experts predicted it might be. However, Kohoutek has provided a bonanza of scientific information. It was first spotted 370 million miles from Earth, by an astronomer who was searching the sky for asteroids, and after whom the comet was named. Scientists who tracked Kohoutek the ten months before it passed the Earth predicted the comet would be a brilliant spectacle. But Kohoutek fell short of these predictions, disappointing millions of amateur sky watchers, when it proved too pale to be seen with the unaided eye. Researchers were very happy nonetheless with the new information they were able to glean from their investigation of the comet. Perhaps the most significant discovery was the identification of two important chemical compounds—methyl cyanide and hydrogen cyanide—never before seen in comets, but found it the far reaches of interstellar space. This discovery revealed new clues about the origin of comets. Most astronomers agree that comets are primordial remnants from the formation of the solar system, but whether they were born between Jupiter and Neptune or much farther out toward interstellar space has been the subject of much debate. If compounds no more complex than ammonia and methane, key components of Jupiter, were seen in comets, it would suggest that comets form within the planetary orbits. But more complex compounds, such as the methyl cyanide found in Kohoutek, point to formation far beyond the planets; there the deep freeze of space has kept them unchanged.

单选题Last weekend Kyle MacDonald in Montreal threw a party to celebrate the fact that he got his new home in exchange for a red paper clip. Starting a year ago, MacDonald bartered the clip for increasingly valuable stuff, including a camp stove and free rent in a Phoenix flat. Having announced his aim (the house) in advance, MacDonald likely got a boost from techies eager to see the Internet pass this daring test of its networking power. "My whole motto was 'Start small, think big, and have fun' ," says MacDonald, 26, "I really kept my effort on the creative side rather than the business side. " Yet as odd as the MacDonald exchange was, barter is now big business on the Net. This year more than 400, 000 companies worldwide will exchange some $10 billion worth of goods and services on a growing number of barter sites. These websites allow companies to trade products for a virtual currency, which they can use to buy goods from other members. In Iceland, garment-maker Kapusalan sells a third of its output on the booming Vidskiptanetid exchange, earning virtual money that it uses to buy machinery and pay part of employee salaries. The Troc-Services exchange in France offers more than 4,600 services, from math lessons to ironing. This is not a primitive barter system. By creating currencies, the Internet removes a major barrier—what Bob Meyer, publisher of Barter News, calls "the double coincidence of wants. " That is, two parties once not only had to find each other, but also an exchange of goods that both desired. Now, they can price the deal in virtual currency. Barter also helps firms make use of idle capacity. For example, advertising is "hugely bartered" because many media, particularly on the Web, can supply new ad space at little cost. Moreover, Internet ads don't register in industry-growth statistics, because many exchanges are arranged outside the formal exchanges. Like eBay, most barter sites allow members to "grade" trading partners for honesty, quality and so on. Barter exchanges can allow firms in countries with hyperinflation or nontradable currencies to enter global trades. Next year, a nonprofit exchange called Quick Lift Two (QL2) plans to open in Nairobi, offering barter deals to 38,000 Kenyan farmers in remote areas. Two small planes will deliver the goods. QL2 director Gacii Waciuma says the farmers are excited to be "liberated from corrupt middlemen". For them, barter evokes a bright future, not a precapitalist past.

单选题Popular wisdom has traditionally held that all "normal" women want to marry and have children and that whatever other interests they might pursue are secondary to these family roles. Women who do not want to marry or mothers who do not enjoy being with their children are thought to be unusual or strange. To fill the traditional homemaker role, females have been expected, to develop a capacity for warmth, compassion, sensitivity, and caring. The traditional role of wife and mother has also carried with it a dependency on men, especially on the husband. Society still considers it perfectly reasonable for a woman to depend entirely on her husband for economic support. The traditional woman"s role had a number of benefits. For one thing, in an era of job scarcity, women were not usually obliged to earn a living for their families. In other words, society does not place as much pressure on women to achieve as it does on men. Although a woman may strive to reach the top of her profession, there is less shame for her in failure or in having only moderate success than there is for a man. Finally the female role allows women more emotional freedom than men. Women are permitted to express their doubts and vulnerability (脆弱); and they have more outlets for their tension and anxiety; and they have fewer inhibitions about seeking intimacy with others. But the traditional female role also has its costs. It has denied women full autonomy in most spheres of American life. The dependency taught to girls in childhood often leads to passivity and timidness in later life. In addition, the female role is associated with a higher incidence of certain kinds of emotional problems, such as depression. Perhaps this is partly because the isolation of homemakers have much opportunity for brooding——especially when the children have grown up and left home.
