As a homeless orphan in Mumbai, she was in a desperate and dangerous situation. Her life changed when she was adopted by a kind elderly couple. Her new parents, Sanjeev and Sunita, taught her how to read and write, and she discovered a passion for language and literature. Madhu is a deeply moving story. Like Gupta's best works of fiction, it features vivid descriptions of particular scenes. The characters are also very clearly and cleverly described. What the story lacks, however, is Gupta's famous sense of humor, especially in the first half of the book. There are no light or amusing episodes to keep the reader entertained. At a recent book signing at Hoovers Bookstore in NewYork, Gupta admitted that she had intentionally made the tone as heavy and serious as possible because she wanted the book to be an intense emotional experience. She has certainly succeeded in her aim. Madhu is not the sort of book you can pick up for a quick read. It is, however, a book that will challenge you and make you think deeply.
