THE PROGRAM SEMINAR The
program seminar is the primary mode of instruction for students at Central
College. A program of study might involve 80 students and four faculty members,
but most of class time is spent in small group discussions--the seminar. Seminar
content centers on a theme or issue relevant to the program. For students, the
close interaction with faculty and fellow students provides perspective through
differing viewpoints, and depth through concentrated group effort. Students
learn to express themselves and to work cooperatively--two traits that our
graduates have found particularly helpful in their lives and careers.
Now cover the passage and listen to the conversation. You may take notes,
and you may use your notes to help you answer the question. After you hear the
question, begin preparing your response. You may look at the question, but NOT
at the passage. You have 30 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to
speak. The woman expresses her opinion about seminars. State
her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion.
问答题In this question, you will listen to a conversation. You
will then be asked to talk about the information in the conversation and to give
your opinion about the ideas presented. After you hear the question, you have 20
seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.
Briefly summarize the problem the speakers are discussing. Then state which
solution you would recommend. Explain the reasons for your recommendation.

问答题Process Explanation Process explanation is a description of an orderly process such as a math formula or a scientific technique. It often happens when someone encounters some difficulties in operating particular projects. There are two types of process explanation: directive explanation and informational explanation. Directive explanation is to directly demonstrate or tell people how to carry out a project step by step. Informational explanation means giving people a general idea about the project without presenting how to follow the instructions and finish the tasks accordingly. Question: The professor gives his personal experience to illustrate the definition and two types of "process explanation". Explain how this example is related to the reading passage.

问答题Removal of Vending Machines on Campus In a surprise move, the University of California announced yesterday it will begin a campus-wide ban on vending machines. The ban, which applies to both dormitories and classroom building corridors, will go into effect at the beginning of Spring Semester 2012. Dr. Ralph Birkenstock, Campus Wellness Facilitator noted two main reasons for the ban. "Vending machines sell junk food," he said. "Removing the machines will enforce healthy eating by students. If a few uncooperative individuals still feel the need to buy snacks, there is that big supermarket right off campus." Question: The woman expresses her opinion of the proposal to remove vending machines on campus. State her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion. Now hear a conversation between two students.
问答题Using the points and examples from the lecture, explain how people make

问答题Proposal from a Student
Students enrolled at the Newton Technical Institute can borrow as many
books as they need. But I am pleased to propose that the volume of books
students check out each time should not be more than ten. By limiting the number
of books in circulation students can focus better on the materials and acquire
more information and details they need while doing research. Furthermore, the
regulation will reduce the possibility of the Volumes lost after being checked
out and kept in students' hands for a long period of time before the due date, I
look forward to seeing our school bring the proposal into effect.
Now hear a conversation about the some topic. The woman
expresses her opinion of the student's proposal to limit the number of books
checked out each time from the library, State her opinion and explain the
reasons she gives for holding that opinion.
问答题Using points and examples from the talk, explain how the two types of
ecotourism are helpful to our environment in the professor's lecture.
问答题For this task, you will write a response to a question
about a reading passage and a lecture. You may take notes, and you may use your
notes to help you write your response. Your response will be scored on the
quality of your writing and on how well you connect the points in the lecture
with points in the reading. Typically, an effective response will have 150 to
225 words. Parents and teachers generally believe it is best
for children to study and play with other children of the same age. For this
reason, same-age peer groups are the norm for children, both in and out of
school, and at all ages, from infancy through adolescence. When children are
organized into groups with their peers, it encourages tolerance and cooperation
and discourages conflict and competition. Peer groups build
tolerance and decrease conflict because the children are equals in terms of
status and power. Even when peers tease each other, the teasing is acceptable
because it occurs among equals. Joking and teasing will actually build
toleration among peers, who are able to work out any differences without the
intervention of adults. Because peers are at the same stage of
mental and physical development, structured competition is a positive experience
for them. The healthy competition of team sports, games, and other contests will
challenge individuals to perform well in order to benefit the group. Contests
and competition between same-age peer groups will reduce conflict because the
competition is structured and managed in a healthy, enjoyable manner.
Competitive games build teamwork and group pride because winning the game is a
shared success. Cooperation comes naturally to children of the
same age because they experience the same events and issues at the same level of
development. Peers are friends, classmates, and teammates who learn together in
a healthy, sharing environment. Same-age peer groups play an important positive
role in children's socialization because they promote cooperation and group
identity. Now listen to the recording. When you hear the
question, begin your response. You may look at the reading passage during the
writing time. Summarize the points made in the lecture, being
sure to explain how they challenge specific points made in the reading passage.
