填空题GillNetFishingATheoriginsofgillnetfishingcannotbetracedwithcertainty,butitisclearthatgillnetsofoneformoranotherhavebeenincontinuoususearoundtheworldformillennia.Theprinciplesandpracticeofgillnettingarebothsosimplethatitseemsplausiblethatgillnetsmaywellhavebeendevelopedindependentlyindifferentpartsoftheworld.Certainly,noonenationorregioncanclaimunambiguouscreditforhavinginitiatedtheiruse.BTherearevarioustypesofgillnet.Driftgillnets(ordriftnets)operatebygillingfishinthemeshesofasheetofnetting.Thenettingisheldmoreorlessverticallyinthewatercolumnbymeansofabuoyantfloatlineatthetopofthenet,andaleadline,towhichweightsareattached,atthebottomofthenet.Netsriggedinthiswaymaybeusedsinglyor,byjoiningthemtogetherserially,asafleetofnets.Usuallythefloatlinefloatsatthesurfaceofthewater,andthenethangsbelowit.Sometimesthefloatlinemayberiggedinsuchawaythatitfloatssomedistancebelowthesurface.Thenetthenfishesalowerpartofthewatercolumn.Insuchcasesthenetispartlysuspendedbyadditionalbuoysatthesurface.Insomesandy-bottomedareas,driftnetsareevenriggedtofishalongthebottomoftheseabed,forprawnsespecially.CThenetislefttofishpassively,fishbeingcaughtwhentheyswimintoitandthemeshesofthenetbecomecaughtbehindtheirgills.Driftnetsmaybeattachedatoneendtotheboatwhichisfishingthem,ortheymaybelefttodriftfleeoftheboatandarerecoveredlater.DDriftnetsareonlyonetypeofgillnet.Setgillnetsarealsowidelyusedincoastalwatersanddifferfromdriftgillnetsinthattheyarefixedbymeansofanchorsorstakestopreventthemfrommovingwiththewater.Driftnets,incontrast,areallowedtodriftwiththewatercurrentsorthewind.EDriftnetsareusuallyfishedatnight,asthemeshesofthenetarelessvisibletothefish.Thetypeofmaterialusedinmakingthenetsisalsoimportantincontrollingthevisibilityofthenet.Inrecentyearsmonofilamentnylon,whichisaclearplastic,hasbeenwidelyused,largelybecauseitisusuallymoredifficulttosee,andisthereforemoreefficientatcatchingfish.FMultifilamenttwinesarealsousedinmanydriftnetfisheries,andhavetheadvantagethattheyarelessrigidthanmonofilament,whichmeansthatonceafishisgilled,itislesslikelytobeabletoescape.Theyarealsolessbulkyandeasiertohandlethanmonofilaments.Toovercometheirgenerallygreatervisibilityunderwater,multifilamentyamsarecolouredinaccordancewiththeenvironmentinwhichtheyarebeingused.GThevastmajorityofvesselsusingdriftnetsintheworldaresmallboats,oftenusedtosupplyfamilyorvillageneedsforpelagicfish.Oftensuchgearshavebeenusedforgenerations,andtheonlymodemimprovementmaybetheuseofnylontwinesratherthancottonorhemporothervegetablematerial.Nylonis,weightforweight,strongerthanthenaturalfibreswhichwereusedtraditionally.Thegreaterstrengthofnyloncomparedwithcottonorhempforexample,hasmeantthatthinnertwinescanbeusedtocatchfishofagivensize,andthishasimprovedthefishingpowerofthenets.Nylonisveryoftencheaperthanatraditionalalternative,althoughthisisnotthecaseeverywhere,andthismayhaveleadtoanincreaseinthenumbersofsmallvesselsusingdriftnets.Furthermore,nylonismoredurablethantraditionalmaterials,whichalsomakesitmoreeconomicaltouse.HOnoccasion,fishmaynotbecaughtsimplybybeinggilled,butmayratherbecomeentangledinseveralmeshesofthenet.Sometimesnetsmayberiggedsothatthesheetofnettingisfixedtothefloatlineandleadlinewithplentyofslacktoencourageentanglement;thisisparticularlysowhenawkwardly-shapedfisharetargeted.Thedegreetowhichanetentanglesratherthangillsisdeterminedbythe"hangingratio"ofthenet.Thisistheratioofthelengthofthenetwhenrigged,tothefullystretchedlengthofthenet(wherethemeshesareallclosed).Typicallyforagillnetthisratiomightbebetween0.5and0.7,forexample,whichresultsinmoreorlessrectangularmeshopenings.Thelowerthehangingratioisthanthis,themorethemeshesofthenetaredistortedfromarectangularshape,andthemorelikelytheyaretoentangle.Ifthehangingratioislowenoughthenetmaymorecorrectlybedescribedasatanglenet.Questions1-3Labelthediagrambelow.Forquestions1-3chooseONEWORDONLYfromthepassageforeachanswer.
