填空题GeneticModificationofFoodGeneticEngineeringorGeneticModificationoffoodhasevolvedoutofaneedtoensureandsustainfoodsecurityaroundtheworldasthepopulationincreases.However,thereisagrowingwaveofconcernfromcitizens,farmersandscientistswhoquestionthewaytheresearchiscurrentlybeinghandledbyafewlarge,profit-hungrycorporations.ThereareincreasinglymoredebatesonboththescientificmeritsandsocioeconomicramificationsofGeneticallyModifiedFood(GMF).Oneofthemajorconcernsisthatgeneticallyengineeredfoodcouldbedangerousastherehasbeennoadequatetestingtoensurethatgeneswhichperformanapparentlyusefulfunctioninoneplantoranimalwillhavethesameeffectswheninsertedintoatotallyunrelatedspecies.Moreemphasishasbeenplacedonensuringthatcropsgrowthantestingthewiderecologyandtheassociatedimpacts.Moreover,thelong-termeffectsonhumans,animalsandtheenvironmentareunknown,despitethefactthattherehasbeensometesting.Althoughthepotentialbenefitsofgeneticallyengineeredfoodareexciting,howcanthisfoodbeguaranteedassafeifithasnotbeentestedproperly?Oneofthebiggestargumentsofsupportersofbiotechnologyisthatthegeneticengineeringoffoodisnecessarytohelpsolveworldhunger.However,thereasonwhymanypeopleintheworldaresufferingfrommalnutritionandhungerisnotbecausefoodisunavailable,butrathertheycannotaffordtobuyit.Evenwithrecentincreasedproductionanduseofindustrialinputssuchasfertilisersandpesticides,worldhungerhasstillbeenhigh,eveninwealthycountries.Simplyincreasingfoodproductionisnottheonlyanswer.Politicalandeconomiccausesofinequalityandhungershouldbeaddressed.Thoseinoppositiontobiotechnologybelievethatgeneticallyengineeredcropswerecreatednotbecausetheyareproductivebutbecausetheyarepatentable.Asaresult,theissueoftherighttopatentlivingorganismshasalsoarisen,especiallyresourcesandseedsthathavebeendevelopedorpassedonastraditionalandpublicknowledge.Largetransnationalcorporationshavebeeninvestingheavilyinbiotechnology,havingalreadypatentednearlyhalfoftheworldsindigenousplantslargelywithouttheknowledgeorconsentofthelocalpeople,whothenfindthattheonlywaytousetheirage-oldknowledgeistobuyitbackfromthebigcorporations.Forinstance,inBrazil,whichhassomeoftherichestbiodiversityintheworld,largemultinationalcorporationshavealreadypatentedaround55,000speciesofflora,amountingtosome22%oftheworld'stotal.MeanwhileinIndiaabout46,000specieshavebeenpatented.Thiscapitalisingonpublicknowledgeoftencomesintoconflictwithindigenousknowledge,therightsofindigenouspeople,sustainabilityoflocalecosystems,andeventheabilityofnationstoprovidefoodsecurityandprotectionoftheglobalenvironment.Geneticengineeringcompaniesspendlargeamountsonpublicrelationstodistortthefacts.TheygetbiggerastheybuyupvariousbiotechfirmsandexertahugeamountofinfluenceinWashingtonD.C.,whichpreventsanylarge-scalemeaningfuldebate.Sowhiletheypresentthemselvesas"lifescience"or"biotechnologyfirms",theyareprimarilychemicalfirms.Forexample,MonsantobroughtusNutraSweet,howevertheyalsocreatedAgentOrange,achemicalweaponusedinVietnamtodefoliatetheentirerainforestecosystems.Variousotherconcernshavebeenraised.ShouldwebeplayingwithGod'screations?WhyhastherebeensuchstaunchresistancebyGMFcompaniestolabellingfoodswhichcontaingeneticallymodifiedingredients?Whyarethetechnologiesbeingpushedthroughwithsuchrapidspeed?WhydoessomecurrentdatashowthatyieldsofGeneticallyEngineered(GE)cropsarenotsignificantlybetterthanthosegrowninconventionalwaysandthatinsomecasesareworseandrequireadditionalpesticides?Undoubtedly,therearealsoadvantagestodevelopingthistechnology.Firstly,thetechnologyrepresentsgreatprofitability(alargelycorporatereason,whichisobviouslyadominantandpowerfuldrive).Secondly,thereisgenuinebeliefthatgeneticallyengineeredfoodwillprovidethefoodsecuritybenefitsenvisioned.Finally,thesciencebehindGMFisappealingandallowsmanypossibilities.Thenextbigthinginbiotechnologyandgeneticallyengineeredfoodsis"Functional(orprescription)Food".Thesefoodsboastthattheycantackleahealthproblembycontainingsomevitamins,orevenavaccineofsomesorttocureortreatadiseaseorillness.However,thishasbeenmetwithjustasmuchcriticismforthesamereasonsmentionedabove.Whilesomearecompletelyagainstbiotechnology,othersareurgingapproachesthataremorecautious.Regardlessoftheirpointofview,theyallwanttheproofthatfoodproducedwithGEtechnologiesissafeforconsumption,however,suchevidenceiscurrentlynotavailable.AlotoftheprotestsandresistancetoGEfoodmentionedabovehavecomefrompeopleinEuropeandotherdevelopednations.However,themostdisturbingfactisthatthecompaniespromotingGEfoodgotoareaslikeAfricawherethereisnotasmuchawarenessoftheissues.
