NOT JUST A SHOP!{{/B}} In his yearly report, the
chairman of a chain of retail outlets writes about the financial aspects of the
business and describes the work which the company has done to benefit people in
the areas where their shops are located. It continues to be an
important part of our company policy to be responsible for the health and
welfare of people in the areas which we serve. In the past year, we have
concentrated especially on education and training, and have invested over $
5,000,000 in this and other areas ranging from the care of the old to the
arts. Let us look at these first. We have, as always, financed
health research and care projects helping not only the old but children and the
disabled too. We were especially pleased this year to provide alarms for
disabled people who live alone and to run programmes which help children
understand better the problems facing disabled people. The
Groundwork Foundation encourages young people in poor areas to improve their
environment, while the Schools Prom concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London
includes 20,000 children nationwide. Both of these were given financial
help. As mentioned above, in the last year we have been active
in supporting a range of education projects. Two of our managers are now out of
the company on one-year projects, training young people for work in the retail
industry and improving the quality of the teaching they receive. In addition, we
have started a programme of three-month schemes which our managerial staff are
able to benefit from without having to take a long break from their jobs.
Schools and universities have also benefited. A London Business School received
$ 50,000 to develop a training programme for UK school staff, giving them the
skills necessary to manage their own schools. A major University has received a
promise of $100,000 over 5 years to fund a new teaching post in international
retailing. This will allow 22 more students to study this subject each year. It
is not only the companythat supports good work for other people. Members of
staff themselves are encouraged to join the company Give as You Earn system, to
give money to others, especially those organizations working for the benefit of
the local area. In such cases the company often gives its support by making an
additional contribution. We look forward to committing even more
money to these and other projects in the coming
year.

JAPAN INCREASES TRADE AND
INVESTMENT IN ASIA{{/B}} Japan has been the most powerful country
in Asia, but it had little trade with the region until now. Now, Japan is doing
more trade with Asia than with the rest of the world. In 1985,
the US was Japan's main customer; Japan exported a third more to the US than to
Asia. Now, Asia buys 30%more than the US and three times as much as Europe.
Japanese imports from Asia increased by 150% between 1985 and 1995. Japan's
imports amount to $ 60 billion from Asia in 1993, compared to $ 50 billion from
the US and $ 24 billion from Europe. In 1994, Japan invested $
7.7 billion in Asia. During the next few years, 75% of Japan's direct investment
will be there. Japanese investment in the region is now $ 64 billion, as against
US investment of $ 26 billion, or German investment of $ 7 billion.
Thailand expects new Japanese investment to reach $ 8 billion by 1998.
Already, Japan controls 90% of Thailand's auto market. Labour costs in Japan are
high, so Japanese companies are setting up in countries where workers get paid
much less; an increasing number of Japan's employees now live outside
Japan.

{{B}}A GROWING RESTAURANT CHAIN{{/B}}Simon Dale, the
chairman and founder of the Dalehouse restaurant chain, yesterday announced
plans to open a further 20 restaurants and create 600 new jobs in the next four
years. The group hopes to open 4 of the new restaurants by the end of this year,
creating up to 120 jobs. The programme will result in a chain of over 100
Dalehouse restaurants in towns and cities all over the United Kingdom by the end
of the four-year period. The company also has a limited programme of
expansion in other countries. There are plans for the company to open its third
restaurant abroad towards the middle of next year as planning permission was
recently received for a restaurant in the south of Spain. At the moment there is
a Dalehouse restaurant in Germany and another in Denmark. Negotiations are
already taking place about opening two more restaurants in Germany and three
more in Spain.Mr Dale said yesterday: 'Our plans are ambitious and there is
no doubt that in some ways they are quite frightening. But we've been in
business for twenty years and a lot of our staff have been with us for most of
that time and, as a result, have experience of things growing at a fast
rate.'The Dalehouse chain currently has 82 restaurants, all in town centre
locations. The group is planning now to expand further in residential areas. The
company intends to continue its tradition of having most of its restaurants open
from midday until midnight seven days a week. It will also continue to open
restaurants in buildings which were originally designed for a different
purpose.Certain financial journalists wonder whether the company will be
able to find enough cash to finance its plans. Mr Dale, however, remains
positive. 'It is true,' he says, 'that we will not be able to finance the plans
without some support from the banks, and we are in the process of arranging this
at the moment. Most of the money, however, will come from the amount we have
kept back from 'our profits for future investment in the business. We opened 4
restaurants last year so an expansion programme of 5 this year and 6 next would
not be outside the normal rate of growth. We have had hardly any problems
financing our expansion in the past and expect this to continue in the
future.
