Dear Mr. Blank:Last October I signed a contract
with your company for the installation of dry walls and the renovation of a
bathroom in my home at the above address. I am now appealing to you to have this
work completed in a satisfactory manner.I have spoken to your Quincy, Mass,
store manager on several occasions, to the plumbing department manager, to your
maintenance people, and to anyone else who seemed to be in a position to assist
in completing the work. I have received considerate responses followed by
service people trying to do the necessary work.Nevertheless, I have had
expensive broadloom rugs badly stained; I have had water pour through my kitchen
ceiling at least six times after your people left my home with everything
supposedly in order; and I now again have leaks, grout falling out, and other
defects. I have experienced nothing but trouble with your workmanship and
materials from the outlet. I will illustrate with detail--an incomplete
list--which your records should confirm.1. An expensive vanity was delivered
with doors assembled upside down and doors catches not functioning
properly.2. The dry wall work was left in such rough condition that your
installers had to return several times. In some areas sanding was overlooked; in
others, dry wall taping was not used, and molding was left incomplete. (The next
few paragraphs listed additional defects.)Mr. Blank, I had your service
people come to the house at least six were denials of responsibility. Children
were blamed, etc. And in each case, it was finally established that the
installation was faulty. At this writing, water is again leaking to the floor
below when the shower is used.Frankly, I believe I have reached the point of
no return in dealing with your local staff.I now want to have my bathroom
completed in a workmanlike manner, even if it means removing the entire
installation. In the event that any removal is necessary, I will not accept a
patched-up finish. For a job that costs about 2,500, your performance has
been outrageously bad. I expect the courtesy of a prompt reply from you, and the
necessary inspections and corrections from qualified personnel.
Sincerely yours,
Howard Gerber

填空题 ·Read the article below about the Import-Export
Balance. ·For each question (31-40), write one word in CAPITAL
LETTERS on your Answer Sheet,
The advantages of international trade are obvious. Trading
with other nations can also pose problems if a country's imports and exports do
not balance out, though.{{U}} (31) {{/U}}deciding whether a balance does
or does not exist, economists use two measures: balance of trade and balance of
payments. The total economic value of all products imported{{U}}
(32) {{/U}}a country compared to the total economic value of ail other
products exported out of the country is that nation's balance of trade.
Relatively small imbalances in the value of imports and exports for a
country are quite common and{{U}} (33) {{/U}}very important.
However, sometimes a country's trade imbalance can be very large.
For example, Japan exports goods and services equal{{U}} (34)
{{/U}}about 15 percent of everything it manufactures. However, it only needs
to import goods and services equal to around 5 percent{{U}} (35)
{{/U}}what it manufactures at home. The difference amounts{{U}} (36)

填空题Some Knowledge about Human Resources Management The Human Resources Management (HRM) function includes a variety of activities, and the key them is deciding what staffing needs you have and whether to use independent contractors or hire employees to fill these needs, recruiting and training the best employees, ensuring they are high performers, dealing (31) performance issues, and ensuring that your personnel and management practices conform (32) various regulations. Activities also include managing your approach (33) employee benefits and compensation, employee records and personnel policies. Usually small businesses (for-profit or nonprofit) have to carry out these activities themselves because they can't yet afford part-time or full-time help. (34) they should always ensure that employees have and are aware (35) personnel policies which conform to current regulations. These policies are often in the (36) of employee manuals, which all employees have. Note (37) some people distinguish a difference between HRM (a major management activity) and HRD (Human Resource Development). Those people might include HRM in HRD, explaining that HRD includes a broader (38) of activities to develop personnel inside of organisations, including career development, training, organisation development, etc. There is a long-standing argument about where HR-related functions should be organised over large organisations. The HRM function and HRD profession have undergone tremendous change (39) the past 20-30 years. Many years ago, large organisations looked to the Personnel Department, mostly to manage the paperwork around hiring and paying people. More recently, organisations consider the HR Department (40) playing a major role in staffing, training and helping to manage people so that people and the organisation are performing at maximum capability in a highly fulfilling manner.
填空题{{B}}PART ONE{{/B}}{{B}}How to approach Reading Test Part One{{/B}}· In this
part of the Reading Test you match eight statements with five short texts.·
First read each short text and then read the sentences to see which ones refer
to the text.· Make sure you read each text for overall meaning, Do not
choose an answer just because you can see the same words in the text.· Look
at the sentences below and at the five sections from an article about
benchmarking on the opposite page.· Which section of the article does each
sentence refer to?· For each sentence 1—8, mark one letter (A, B, C, D or E)
on your Answer Sheet.· You will need to use some of these letters more than
once.
{{B}}A{{/B}} Benchmarking involves establishing minimum
standards of performance and quality, based on identifying the best method and
practice followed in other organisations. These standards can then be used as
yardsticks to measure the organisation's current costs, production, management
and customer focus, and identify areas where they fall short of norms. According
to its supporters, benchmarking raises awareness of innovations and best
practice, thus helping all companies taking part in benchmarking exercises to
increase their competitiveness: by imitating best practice they may be able to
reduce their costs or improve their customer service.{{B}}B{{/B}}
There are a number of approaches to benchmarking. Typically, exercises are
carried out by companies working within the same field or sector, as in the
International Motor Vehicle Programme. Between 1985 and 1990 this brought
together car manufacturers from Europe, the USA and Japan with the aim of
introducing the western companies to Japanese production methods. As
benchmarking by competitors can be very sensitive, in some cases data is
mediated through a neutral body, such as a business school, to protect
confidentiality and make sure that no trade secrets are
revealed.{{B}}C{{/B}} There are also instances of companies in
widely different industries comparing their management practices, to see how
others have dealt with difficulties in internal communications, supply chain
management, and other areas where practice is transferable from company to
company without affecting competition between rivals, in other words, topics
where confidentiality is not at issue. To a certain degree this practice has
been aided by the development of internet websites dedicated to the sharing of
information, sites which, being in the public domain, are universally
accessible. Of course, this means that only certain types of data are
provided.{{B}}D{{/B}} Unlike benchmarking exercises with
competitors, which run the risk that participants may want to take what they can
and give away as little as possible, benchmarking between the divisions or
business units of a single company is far less likely to lead to the withholding
of information. As a by-product, co-operation among different sections of the
company may well be enhanced, both through increased understanding of how others
operate, and by simply being able to put a face to a name, and know who to talk
to about a particular work-related problem.{{B}}E{{/B}} learning
from the successes and failures of others can of course be very valuable. On the
other hand, critics claim that by concentrating on existing best practice,
companies simply seek to emulate other businesses. Content to achieve the best
of what is being done at the moment, they do not attempt to move beyond it to
reach the best possible. However this ignores the creative aspect of the
process: learning about other organisations' operations may well spark off fresh
ideas, as in a brainstorming session, and lead into the realm of true
innovation.
