Chairman's Statement{{/B}} Despite the appearance of a new
competitor on the market, the company continued to grow and increase its market
share throughout 2000. Partly in response to this new threat, but more
importantly, as part of a strategy for growth, several key decisions were taken
this year. The most significant new developments included a range of
vitamin-rich drinks for children and low calorie diet drinks, which both proved
very popular. The company is still best known for its range of
refreshing fruit drinks and, not surprisingly, these were our biggest sellers
once more. There were two new additions to the range last year, Squish! and
Liquid Sunshine, both of which have a distinctive Caribbean flavour. The first
sales figures suggest that our expensive TV advertising campaign was very
successful and that these products will soon be as popular as the rest of the
fruit drink range. Growth in the keep-fit and health markets
meant our energy drinks did well in 2000. Sales of one brand, Booster were
second only to fruit drinks in April. The strength of this particular market
also explains the success of our new diet drinks. There were,
however, big differences in the performance of our older products. The company's
oldest product, mineral water, continued to enjoy a healthy share of a very
profitable mass market. It seems our customers are still happy to stay with the
brand despite the increasing number of competitors' products. Unfortunately, the
same cannot be said of our Ice-T and Chocomania drinks. Sales showed an initial
increase in the summer after we re-launched both products but customers soon
bought other brands and total annual sales for both product ranges were
disappointing. The company also said goodbye to its own brand of
cola, launched in 1998. After two unsuccessful years of trying to break into the
huge cola market, 2000 looked like being another poor year. The company finally
accepted that it had made a wrong decision and stopped production in September
of that year.
单选题TapeStore: A NEW TAPE STORAGE SYSTEM TapeStore is a new kind of tape storage system which can store up to 6,000 computer tapes. No other tape storage system can hold as many computer tapes as TapeStore. The tapes look exactly like video cassettes. Many hundreds of data files can be stored on each tape, up to a maximum of 500 million bytes of data. If you stored the same amount of information on paper, you would need nearly 4.5 billion printed pages. The machine is a tall black box with a mechanical arm. The machine is 2.5 metres high and 3 metres wide. This is how it works. Each tape has a code printed on it. You feed the code number into TapeStore, which then looks for the code. As soon as TapeStore locates the code, the arm reaches in and pulls out the tape. The system is very fast. It takes the mechanical arm about 10 seconds to find the tape it is looking for. The machine then searches the tape to extract the required file, and this take Less than a minute. A human technician would have to locate and remove the tape by hand, and could take at least an hour to find the right file on the tape. Some of the world's biggest companies, including banks, insurance companies, airlines, telephone companies, utilities and computer centres, have bought the system. They like it particularly because the system guarantees the security of their data. TapeStore was originally developed in Canada and is now being marketed world-wide. In Europe alone, 750 have already been installed at a cost of 480,000 dollars each.

单选题Reducing a supermarket chain's costs A few years ago, the Sainsbury's supermarket chain asked management consultancy Cobalt to find ways of significantly reducing its operating costs and increasing the turnover in its stores. The team, at first made up of four Cobalt project managers and five Sainsbury's colleagues, was challenged to make £300m of savings within five years. Beginning with a pilot exercise which cut the cost to the company of own-brand olive oil by £400,000, the team looked at a number of products and found potential savings in many areas, including stock reduction and distribution changes. To motivate the team, whenever a saving was recorded on a board in the centre of Cobalt's open-plan office, everyone clapped the team achievement. As the project progressed, it expanded, with Cobalt recruiting and training extra team members to look at more products at the same time. After just over a year, the team began training Sainsbury's 130 trading managers and buyers in its recommended approach. With savings now over £100m, Sainsbury's was so pleased that it decided to expand the approach to the whole of its operations. Cobalt is now driving a team of 50 Sainsbury's colleagues towards a new target: corporate savings of £700m.
