单选题A Recipe for Success Not many companies can boast of having been in business for more than three and a half centuries. Yuzaburo Mogi, president and CEO of Kikkoman Corp. — the world's leading manufacturer of soy sauce — is well aware however that the company can't rest on its laurels if it's to successfully meet the challenge posed by its thousands of competitors globally. But Mogi — the first Japanese person to ever earn an MBA from the Columbia Business School in 1961 — loves a challenge. He learned American management methods through his studies at Colombia, as well as practical marketing know-bow thanks to his experience as a product demonstrator, serving soy sauce in supermarkets and at international trade fairs during his summer breaks from his studies at Columbia, which has been a source of inspiration for him through the years. In 1957, the company established Kikkoman International, Inc. in San Francisco in order to launch full-scale sales and marketing activities in the US. Test kitchens were built and home economists were recruited to come up with recipes for American-style dishes using soy sauce. The recipes were introduced in newspaper articles, on tiny recipe books attached to the necks of soy sauce bottles, and in cookbooks. Kikkoman's strategy of building a global company that acts locally has contributed greatly to its growth. Kikkoman hires local people to operate its plants outside Japan, and develops marketing campaigns that appeal to consumers in overseas markets. The goal is to have consumers identify Kikkoman's products as the leading locally made products in its field. "We have seen our soy sauce becoming more and more a part of the American lifestyle," Mogi says. As he notes, Kikkoman has captured 56% of the US market, double that of its nearest competitor, and the company has the top share of the world market. Kikkoman is also a leader when it comes to quality. Its soy sauce is naturally brewed, unlike many of its rival products, which are chemically produced. Kikkoman's commitment to high quality has made it an unparalleled brand in recent decades, as consumers in the US and other countries have become more health-conscious and aware of the importance of truly natural food. "That is why our soy sauce has established itself as an all-purpose seasoning, a dependable ingredient, in kitchens around the globe," Mogl says.

单选题TRADING PLACES Susan Robinson looks at job swapping, a staff development plan in which employees exchange jobs for a short period. According to a recent survey 69% of people would prefer to work for a boss who offers training and learning in the workplace. One increasingly popular project is job swapping, which gives an insight into the daily challenges facing different people in different roles. Jane Brown is a divisional manager with Parker Bridge Ltd, and she recently swapped jobs with salary controller there. Both were then able to appreciate the problems and pressures of each other's roles far more clearly. Brown says, "I now have better understanding of what the salary controller's work involves, and I am more aware of my colleague's deadlines. This type of cross training is important, and having to learn about another person's role is a useful experience for bosses and employees alike. Job swapping also helps you to understand the way other departments work and give you access to other teams within your firm. So it is of value both to the individual and the company as a whole." George Knight, who works in central London, took his job exchange a lot further -- all the way to Sydney, Australia in fact. "I loved it," said Knight. "Primarily for geographic reasons, but also because of the challenge of being the final decision-maker rather than reporting to a manager. It was my first management experience and I had to improve my skills on some IT specializations. I learnt a lot there, and it was useful too -- I've had two promotions since I returned to London." Job swapping is an excellent first step towards improving and bringing variety to training and education in the workplace. Doing something else, even for one day, can highlight your abilities and talents. It can also focus the mind on future career possibilities. And even if you hate your time spent at someone else's desk, the worst that can happen is that you'll end up feeling that little bit better about returning to your usual job.

单选题Littleton News Update The rate of unemployment in Littleton, a small town in the south west of England, has reached a record high this week. According to Helen Santer of Littleton Business Association, there are currently over 4,000 people registered as unemployed. This represents almost a quarter of the town's working population and is an increase of 5% compared to the previous year. The main reason for this rise was the closure of the last remaining factory in the town, LKS. The company, which manufactured a number of parts for use in the computer industry, finally closed its doors in August, leaving over 150 people without work. Another major employer in Littleton, the Victoria Hotel, was recently bought by the well-known hotel chain Mount Clark, which fought off an attempted takeover by the health club operators Health Check. Although staff had feared that they would lose their jobs in the resulting reorganisation, hardly any 'employees have in fact been made redundant. The company's management has recently announced ambitious plans for the improvement of the building's guestrooms.
单选题Welcome to Amsterdam Amsterdam is a city of many faces. It is the capital of the Netherlands, even though it is not the seat of Parliament or the government. Amsterdam is more than just a capital however. It is the essence of the Netherlands: not just because it is the largest city in the country, but more particularly because it is the mainspring of our country's economic, social and cultural life. Already more than seven hundred years old, our compact city has more of which it can be proud: world-class orchestras and dance groups, more than fourty renowned museums, almost a thousand restaurants serving cuisine from countries around the globe, gabled mansions and magnificent churches from the 17th century Golden Age. But, as Amsterdammers, we are most proud of our tradition of hospitality. We really want every one to feel at home. You will find this friendliness and helpfulness everywhere: at the VVVTourist Office, in our hotels and restaurants, at our colourful sheet markets and distinctive Haute Couture shops, in our brown cafes and nightclubs. Whether you are a business executive or a tourist, you will find people here eager to talk with you usually in your own language. Multilingualism is another feature in which the Dutch take pride.
