单选题Interviewing Skills, by Hazel ConwayThe aim of interviewing is to fill vacancies with suitable people, and Hazel Conway points out that if all interviewers were skilled, far fewer people would be given jobs they cannot do, and then leave soon afterwards. It is generally recognised that the cost of recruiting a replacement can equal an annual salary, but it is a weakness of Conway's book that it does not deal with the costs that ineffective interviewing techniques can lead to. Conway claims that the traditional 'question and answer' interview between two people depends too much on whether the interviewer likes the candidate, and not enough on whether he or she has the skills necessary for the job. Interviewing Skills usefully covers everything an employer needs to know about preparing for and holding interviews, such as researching the applicant's work experience. Surprisingly, Conway differs from many writers in considering that applicants' personal interests should play no part in decisions concerning appointments. Many might also disagree with the book's ideas on how to reject unsuccessful candidates. While Interviewing Skills would be helpful for someone about to interview job applicants for the first time, it has little to offer anyone experienced in the activity.

单选题A Recipe for Success Not many companies can boast of having been in business for more than three and a half centuries. Yuzaburo Mogi, president and CEO of Kikkoman Corp. — the world's leading manufacturer of soy sauce — is well aware however that the company can't rest on its laurels if it's to successfully meet the challenge posed by its thousands of competitors globally. But Mogi — the first Japanese person to ever earn an MBA from the Columbia Business School in 1961 — loves a challenge. He learned American management methods through his studies at Colombia, as well as practical marketing know-bow thanks to his experience as a product demonstrator, serving soy sauce in supermarkets and at international trade fairs during his summer breaks from his studies at Columbia, which has been a source of inspiration for him through the years. In 1957, the company established Kikkoman International, Inc. in San Francisco in order to launch full-scale sales and marketing activities in the US. Test kitchens were built and home economists were recruited to come up with recipes for American-style dishes using soy sauce. The recipes were introduced in newspaper articles, on tiny recipe books attached to the necks of soy sauce bottles, and in cookbooks. Kikkoman's strategy of building a global company that acts locally has contributed greatly to its growth. Kikkoman hires local people to operate its plants outside Japan, and develops marketing campaigns that appeal to consumers in overseas markets. The goal is to have consumers identify Kikkoman's products as the leading locally made products in its field. "We have seen our soy sauce becoming more and more a part of the American lifestyle," Mogi says. As he notes, Kikkoman has captured 56% of the US market, double that of its nearest competitor, and the company has the top share of the world market. Kikkoman is also a leader when it comes to quality. Its soy sauce is naturally brewed, unlike many of its rival products, which are chemically produced. Kikkoman's commitment to high quality has made it an unparalleled brand in recent decades, as consumers in the US and other countries have become more health-conscious and aware of the importance of truly natural food. "That is why our soy sauce has established itself as an all-purpose seasoning, a dependable ingredient, in kitchens around the globe," Mogl says.

单选题NEW PRODUCT WILL SAVE LIVESDrinking water that looks clean may still contain bugs, which can cause illness. A small company called Genera Technologies has produced a testing method in three stages, which shows whether water is safe. The new test shows if water needs chemicals added to it, to destroy anything harmful. It was invented by scientist Dr Adrian Parton, who started Genera five years ago. He and his employees have developed the test together with a British water company.Andy Headland, Genera's marketing director, recently presented the test at a conference in the USA and forecasts good American sales for it. Genera has already sold 11 of its tests at ~42,500 a time in the UK and has a further four on order. It expects to sell another 25 tests before the end of March. The company says it is the only test in the UK to be approved by the government.Genera was formed five years ago and until October last year had only five employees; it now employs 14. Mr Headland believes the company should make around ~1.9 million by the end of the year in the UK alone.

单选题·Read the application letter below.·Are sentences 16-22 on the opposite page 'Right' or 'Wrong' ? If there is not enough information to answer 'Right' or 'Wrong', choose 'Doesn't Say'.·For each sentence 16-22, mark one letter (A, B or C) on your Answer Sheet. Dear Ms Downings, You want retail clerks and managers who are accurate, enthusiastic, and experienced. You want someone who cares about customer service, who understands merchandising, and who can work with others to get the job done. When you're ready to hire a manager trainee or a clerk who is willing to work toward promotion, please consider me for the job. Working as clerk and then as assistant department manager in a large department store has taught me how challenging a career in retailing can be. Moreover, my AA degree in retailing (including work in such courses as retailing, marketing, and business information systems) will provide your store with a well-rounded associate. Most important, I am eager to take on responsibility, and willing to continue learning throughout my career. Please look over my resume to see how my skills can benefit your store. I understand that Wal-Mart prefers to promote its managers from within the company, and I would be pleased to start out with an entry-level position until I gain the necessary experience. Do you have any associate positions opening up soon? Could we discuss my qualifications? I will phone you early next Wednesday to arrange a meeting at your convenience. Sincerely, Glenda Johns Glenda Johns

单选题 NOT JUST A SHOP! In his yearly report, the chairman of a chain of retail outlets writes about the financial aspects of the business and describes the work which the company has done to benefit people in the areas where their shops are located. It continues to be an important part of our company policy to be responsible for the health and welfare of people in the areas which we serve. In the past year, we have concentrated especially on education and training, and have invested over $ 5,000,000 in this and other areas ranging from the care of the old to the arts. Let us look at these first. We have, as always, financed health research and care projects helping not only the old but children and the disabled too. We were especially pleased this year to provide alarms for disabled people who live alone and to run programmes which help children understand better the problems facing disabled people. The Groundwork Foundation encourages young people in poor areas to improve their environment, while the Schools Prom concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London includes 20,000 children nationwide. Both of these were given financial help. As mentioned above, in the last year we have been active in supporting a range of education projects. Two of our managers are now out of the company on one-year projects, training young people for work in the retail industry and improving the quality of the teaching they receive. In addition, we have started a programme of three-month schemes which our managerial staff are able to benefit from without having to take a long break from their jobs. Schools and universities have also benefited. A London Business School received $ 50,000 to develop a training programme for UK school staff, giving them the skills necessary to manage their own schools. A major University has received a promise of $100,000 over 5 years to fund a new teaching post in international retailing. This will allow 22 more students to study this subject each year. It is not only the companythat supports good work for other people. Members of staff themselves are encouraged to join the company Give as You Earn system, to give money to others, especially those organizations working for the benefit of the local area. In such cases the company often gives its support by making an additional contribution. We look forward to committing even more money to these and other projects in the coming year.

If there isn't enough information to answer "Right" or "Wrong", choose "Doesn't say".· For each sentence, mark one letter (A, B or C) on your Answer Sheet. {{B}}HERE WE GOOGLE AGAIN{{/B}} Google dominates the Internet-search business, such as Netscape once ruled in Web browsers and Real Networks did in media players. Begun as a research project by two graduate students in 1998, Google today carries out more than 200 million searches a day and is estimated to have had $1 billion income last year, mainly from advertising sector. It is the most visited search site, accounting for 35% of search-engine visits — compared with 28% for Yahoo, 16% for AOL and 15% for Microsoft's MSN, according to comScore Networks, a market-research company. But that masks its tree influence. Google's technology is used to power searches on other sites, such as Yahoo and AOL (though Yahoo plans to use its own technology soon). Taking this into account makes Google responsible for around 80% of all Internet searches. The company is now preparing for a stock market flotation in the next few months. Google's power makes it just the sort of company that Microsoft typically tries to squash. At the World Economic Forum in Davos last week, Mr. Gates admitted that Google's search technology was "way better" than Microsoft's, and identified Internet search as a key focus for his company.
