单选题CYCLES MOVE WITH THE TIMES Times have been hard for the UK cycle industry. Poor weather and competition from abroad have had a serious effect on sales. Manufacturers have had to cut back and last month more than 40 job losses were announced at Cycle World, one of the country's main bicycle factories in Leicester. But the company says it is fighting to win back customers, using such strategies as improved after-sales and bikes built to specific customer requirements. Two years ago, Cycle World sold off its bike-making machinery in an effort to cut costs and save money. The company's Leicester factory is now only an assembly plant as most of the parts are imported. The company produces half a million bikes a year across the full Cycle World range, with nearly all of these being sold in the UK. Production is largely done by hand. Workers use the batch production method - everyone making up to 600 bikes of a particular model at any one time. At the height of its success, Cycle World employed 7,000 people but, like many areas of manufacturing, it has since shrunk. Its 1950s purpose- built factory now employs just 470 permanent workers, with numbers rising to 700 as temporary staff are taken on to meet seasonal demands in sales.

单选题Every town in America may have a post office. Some are very small, and you may also find them in the corner of a shop. Others are large buildings. They are open five days a week and Saturday mornings. From Monday through Friday they are usually open from 8: 30 to 4: 30. If you know how much the postage for your letter, you can buy stamps from machines. Stamps are sold at many different prices, from one cent to many dollars. If you are not sure how much postage is for your letters, you can ask the clerk(职员). He or she will give you the stamps you need. If you are sending your letters far away, write on the envelope that you want them to go by air or use an air-mail envelope. Remember that postage will be more expensive for a letter you want to send overseas. At a post office you can also buy postcards. A postcard is cheaper than a letter. Usually the price of postage for a postcard is about half that of a letter. The postcards you buy at a post office do not have pictures. They are also not to be sent outside the country. Letters are an easy and cheap way to communicate(交流)with people in many different countries.

单选题Here we Google again Google dominates the Internet-search business, such as Netscape once ruled in Web browsers and RealNetworks did in media players. Begun as a research project by two graduate students in 1998, Google today carries out more than 200 million searches a day and is estimated to have had $1 billion income last year, mainly from advertising sector. It is the most visited search site, accounting for 35% of search-engine visits — compared with 28% for Yahoo, 16% for AOL and 15% for Microsoft's MSN, according to comScore Networks, a market-research company. But that masks its true influence. Google's technology is used to power searches on other sites, such as Yahoo and AOL (though Yahoo plans to use its own technology soon). Taking this into account makes Google responsible for around 80% of all Internet searches. The company is now preparing for a stock market flotation in the next few months. Google's power makes it just the sort of company that Microsoft typically tries to squash. At the World Economic Forum in Davos last week, Mr Gates admitted that Google's search technology was "way better" than Microsoft's, and identified Internet search as a key focus for his company.
