填空题AChief Michael Omisade, a lawyer, has been appointed chairman of the National Bank of Nigena. He succeeds Mr. C S. O. Akande, who relinquished the post at the end of his three-year term. The Board of Directors of the Bank has also been reconstituted with the appointment of five new persons: Mr. M A. AdAeniran, Mr. G. L. Oyawola, Chief Femi Oyebanjo, Mr. Tunde Oyefodunnn, Mr. ,J. O. Turki, Mr. S. O. Banjo (the managing director) and Mr. J. A. Ogunbiyi.BUnion officials from Australia, Barbados, Britain, Canada, India, Sierra Leone and Tanzania have been named as the steering committee of the newly-formed Commonwealth Trade Union Council (CTUC) . Dennis McDermott, President of the Canadian Labour Congress, was appointed chairman of the council, whose chief aim is promoting the interests of trade unions and some 25m workers in the Commonwealth, specially those in the developing countries of Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. Mr. Len Murray, General Secretary of the British Trades Union Congress, said he hoped the new organization, officially formed on March 1, could help further the dialogue between the nations of the industrialized North and the developing South.CThe Sokoto Match Factory, opened in 1978, has been closed down due to acute shortage of spare pans, lack of raw materials and cash flow problems. The general manager of the company? Mr. Nasir Mikhali, regretted the closure because he had thought the project was viable. The factory was a joint venture of the Sokoto State Government, Messrs Alawa A/C factory, and PAPCO (Nigeda) Ltd. It had 50 employees and was producing about 27,000 canons of good quality matches a year. The workers went on strike.DThe meeting of the international Tin Council in London earlier this month decided to raise the price range of the buffer stock by ten percent. This lifted the "floor" from 1,500 ringgit (Malaysian dollars) per picul (133 1/31bs) to M 1,650 per picul and the "ceiling" from M 1,950 to M 2,145. At last week's exchange rates that would make the floor a bit under 6,000 a tonne and the ceiling over 7,250 a tonne, with the middle belt, where the buffer stock manager may neither buy nor sell without special permisson, from about 6,150 a tonne just over 6,700 a tonne.

填空题Are you one of those people who doesn’t trust anyone else to do what needs to be done? Some managers they can’t bear anyone else to help them in any way. They34. don't believe that anyone can do such a job as well as they can. It is not surprising35. that they then get overwhelmed by work and complain that they have far too much36. to do, but it could be argued that it is by their own fault. If they learnt to delegate,37. they would have much more time available. Besides the saving time and freeing38. them to concentrate on tasks that are important, delegating also benefits to the39. company. If managers delegate effectively, their staff will become more skilled and40. committed. Asking staff to make the decisions improves their efficiency and morale.41. This will contribute itself not only to the success of the team, but to the success of42. the company as a whole. More importantly, it will also show how good a person's43. managerial skills are, which is useful when those candidates are considered for44. the promotion. Trusting other people to do a job properly and providing them with the45. opportunity to do so well is therefore an essential management skill in the workplace of today.

BA/BLawyers for State Farm policyholders complaining about
after-market parts had asked for more than $ 5.4 billion in damages in a class
action. The suit accused the State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. of
breaching its contract with policyholders to restore their cars to their
pre-accident conditions. The lawsuit combined the potential claims of $ 4.7
million current and former State Farm policyholders. Plaintiffs sought $1.4
billion on the breach of contract and about $ 4 billion on the other
counts.BB/BAt issue before the jury was use of parts such as door
panels, hoods and fenders that were modeled on original parts produced by or for
automakers but made without use of original specifications. About 15 percent of
all crash-repair parts used last year were after-market replacements, according
to insurance and auto-body repair groups. Critics claimed such parts failed to
provide the same fit corrosion protection and, in some cases, safety as more
expensive parts made for automakers.BC/BState Farm said the use of
the parts did not affect driver's safety and helped hold down premiums. During
trial, State Farm lawyers said the use of after-market parts saved policyholders
more than $ 233 million in premiums in 1998. Meanwhile, the company's spokesman
said the company wouldn't immediately change its policy, but he added that was
not to say it wouldn't review its policy at some time.BD/BA decision
on parts of the suit was still pending while the jury has ordered State Farm to
pay $ 456 million for allegedly cheating customers by ordering body shops to use
substandard repair parts. Industry analysts and some consumer advocates have
said a large verdict against State Farm could reduce the use of after-market
parts in the auto-repair business and drive up the price of crash repairs. The
verdict was also considered a great victory for policyholders and the body-shop
industry as a whole plaintiff.
填空题Performance Evaluation When we are introduced to someone for the first time, we automatically form an impression based on his or her appearance, voice, and personality traits. Right or wrong, these first impressions can be lasting ones. Sometimes we base our evaluations of other people on more substantial evidence—the way they perform their jobs or interact with their co-workers and superiors, for example. Although many of the evaluations we make on a daily basis are not conscious, they still have a significant impact on the way we view the people around us. If you're a manager, your working day involves a series of appraisals. Perhaps you begin by making the rounds of various activities for which you are responsible, checking on where major pieces of work stand. You chat briefly with your employees, find out what they're doing. (8) .Back at your own desk, you go through your mail, answering according to what you know about the person you're addressing. The way you hand out work assignments is also based on what you know about individual employees. You provide instruction, guidance, and coaching on the basis of each worker's experience and maturity. If you have visitors during the day, you unconsciously size them up and adjust your speech and actions accordingly. (9) .If an employee is up for salary review, you decide whether or not he or she merits more money. If there is a vacancy in the department, you weigh the relative qualifications of the available candidates before making your decision. These are standard activities for any manager or supervisor, and yet each involves a deliberate act of appraisal. The point here is that performance appraisal is not an occasional or chance occurrence. (10) . Outside the work environment, of course, the evaluations we make of other may merely determine whether or not we choose them as our friends. (11) .These judgments may determine who gets a job, who is given an opportunity for additional training, who gets a raise or a promotion, who is transferred or reassigned, and who is terminated. This is one reason why performance evaluation skills and techniques deserve the attention that is given. The purposes for which performance evaluation are conducted are almost as varied as the techniques that have been developed to gather the necessary data. (12) .For example, employees could be motivated to improve their performance.A.In your contacts with your own boss, you organise your material and present your information in a way that will gain his or her approval.B.It is an integral part of the manager's job as it is beneficial to both the one being evaluated and the company per se.C.On the basis of your knowledge of each of them, you decide whether or not a particular work item requires your attention.D.But there are some objectives that all evaluation systems share.E.Few managers would dispute that employees are the company's most valuable asset.F.But the evaluation we make in the context of an employment relationship are far more crucial in terms of outcome.
