单选题In every day usage "hot" means "having a lot of heat". Many people think that "cold" is something completely separated from heat. But this is not true. "Cold" simply means "having very little heat." Your life depends on heat. In fact, every living thing depends on it. (28) Without heat, every living thing would be frozen to death. All living things get their heat from the sun, which provides the conditions in which life is possible. Since the dawn of history, man has been able to make his own heat. He has been able to release the sun's heat that is trapped in things such as wood, coal and oil. And he has been able to use this heat. Heat has made civilization possible. With heat, man could melt metals. As man learned to use metals and fuels, industries grew. As a result, engines were invented. These are machines that change heat energy into mechanical energy. Engine can do the work of many men. Without engines industrial civilization is impossible. Yet when the first engines were built in the 17th century, men were still wondering about the nature of heat. "What is it?" they asked. Not until the early years of 19th century did they find the right answer.

单选题Economically, the world can be divided into two parts. The difference between them is that one part is poor and the other is wealthy. In the poor countries of the world, a lot of people never get enough to eat. In the wealthy countries, a lot of people eat too much. The tragedy is that there are more people in the poor countries than there are in the wealthy countries. It is estimated that about 80% of the world's population cannot afford to have proper food, housing or medical care. The poorer countries are often referred to as the Third World. They have special problems. Often their land is too poor to grow anything on. The land can be improved. But a lot of things have to be done first, new farming methods have to be introduced, people have to be educated, and reliable sources of water and energy have to be found. Many of these problems are too complex for one country to solve alone. Outside help is needed, but it has to be the right kind of help. Money is not enough. Newly developed countries need to be helped to be able to help themselves.

单选题On-the-job smoking is a hot issue for both smokers and non-smokers, and many managers now see smoking as a productivity (生产力) problem. Although some people question whether smoking really affects one"s productivity, it has, in fact, been proven that a smoker costs a company more than a non-smoker. According to Professor William Weis, a smoking employee costs his or her employer about $5,700 more a year than a never-smoker. These costs include medical care, lost earnings and insurance. And absence due to smoking breaks is one of the productivity problems, yet it accounts for a great deal of employer costs. When the issue of smoking at the workplace is discussed, perhaps the most important problem is the health risk that smoking causes to both smokers and never-smokers. It has long been proven that smoking is linked to lung cancer. Now many health experts warn that passive smoking can cause lung cancer and other illnesses in healthy never-smokers. Passive smoking can be defined as exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke in enclosed areas. Anyone who has been with smokers indeed knows that their smoke can cause eye irritation (刺激), coughing, headaches and throat soreness. While eye irritation may seem a small thing to some smokers, it nevertheless is a problem that occurs every workday in offices and break-rooms and can lead to greater health problems. Employees who do not smoke should not be subjected (遭受) to the risks of passive smoking and need to be able to work in a safe environment. Surgeon General Koop states that the right of the smoker stops at the point where his or her smoking increases the disease risk of those occupying the same environment.

单选题Most of us trade money for entertainment. Movies, concerts and shows are enjoyable but expensive. (78) If you think that you can't have a good time without spending a lot of money, read on. A little resourcefulness and a few minutes of newspaper- scanning should give you some pleasant surprises. People may be the most interesting show in a large city. Stroll through busy streets and see what everybody else is doing. (79) You will probably see people from all over the world; you will certainly see people of every age, size, and shape, and you' II get a free fashion show, too. Window - shopping is also a safe sport - if the stores are closed. Check the listings in your neighborhood paper. Local colleges or schools often welcome the public to hear an interesting speaker or a good debate. The film or concert series at the local public library probably won't cost you a penny. Be sure to check commercial advertisements too. A flea market can provide hours of pleasant browsing. Perhaps you can find a free cooking or crafts demonstration in a department store. Plan ahead for some activities. It is always more pleasant not to have people in front of you in a museum or at a zoo. You may save some money, too, since these places often set aside one or two free admission days at slow times during the week. Pretend that you are a tourist from time to time, and get to know your city all over again including the indispensable sights that people travel miles to see. If you feel like taking an interesting walk, find a free walking tour, or plan one yourself. You will see your city in a new perspective once you know more about its history or its architectural treasures. With imagination and a spirit of adventure you can quite easily find good entertainment at no cost at all.
