单选题How can we get rid of garbage? Do we have enough energy sources to meet our future energy needs? These are two important questions that many people are asking today. Some people think that man might be able to solve both problems at the same time. They suggest using garbage as an energy source, and at the same time it can save the land to hold garbage. For a long time, people buried garbage or dumped (倾倒) it on empty land. Now, empty land is scarce. But more and more garbage is produced each year. However, garbage can be a good fuel to use. The things in garbage do not look like coal, petroleum, or natural gas; but they are chemically similar to these fossil (化石) fuels. As we use up our fossil fuel supplies, we might be able to use garbage as an energy source. Burning garbage is not a new idea. Some cities in Europe and the United States, have been burning garbage for years. The heat that is produced by burning garbage is used to boil water. The steam that is produced is used to make electricity or to heat nearby buildings. In Paris France, some power plants burn almost 2 million metric tons of the cities garbage each year. The amount of energy produced is about the same as would be produced by burning almost a half million barrels of oil. Our fossil fuel supplies are limited. Burning garbage might be one kind of energy source that we can use to help meet our energy needs. This method could also reduce the amount of garbage piling up on the earth.

单选题The reflective towers of New York City, which is on the Atlantic migrating (迁徙) route, can be deadly for bird. "We live in an age of glass," said Ms. Laurel, an architect. "It can be a perfect mirror in certain lights, and the larger the glass, the more dangerous it is." About 90,000 birds are killed by flying into buildings in the city each year. Often, they strike the lower levels of glass towers after searching for food in nearby parks. Such crashes are the second leading cause of death for migrating birds, after habitat (栖息地) loss, with an estimated number of death ranging up to a billion a year. As glass office and apartment towers have increased in the last decade, so, too, have calls to make them less deadly to birds. San Francisco adopted bird-safety standards for new buildings in July. The United States Green Building Council, a nonprofit industry group that encourages the creation of environmentally conscious buildings, will introduce a bird-safety credit this fall as part of its environmental certification process. There are no easy fixes, however. A few researchers are exploring glass designs that use ultraviolet (紫外线的) signals, but they are still in their infancy. Covers, dot patterns, shades and nets are the main options available. Often, only one section of a building needs to be changed. "You don"t necessarily have to treat every window," Ms. Laurel said. "It would be too expensive to do the whole building." The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, which has been undergoing alterations, is the most recent building to voluntarily correct the problem of bird crashes. The architects used less reflective glass and dot patterns.

单选题{{B}}Passage 47{{/B}} We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. "Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen? " "When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?" When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it's too late. Why do we go wrong about our friends, or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don't really listen we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, "You're a lucky dog." That's friendly. But "lucky dog"? There is a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn't see it himself. But mentioning the "dog" puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn't think you ought to have your luck. "Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for" is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn't important. It's telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven't got a date for Saturday night. How can you tell the real meaning behind someone's words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture (姿态)? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. (47) {{U}}If you spend one minute thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you, you may avoid another mistake.{{/U}}

单选题Is new technology damaging our ability to communicate? Fingers flying, we can blog (写博客), e-mail, and enter chat rooms. But, as we type our millions of words, something is being lost. As our virtual skills increase, I wonder if our ability to communicate using speech is on the decline. Young people send me dozens of e-mails from schools and universities. They often attach long lists of questions, to which they want detailed response. Time is short, so my reply is usually that they can phone me and I"ll do my best to answer. They very rarely do, at least partly because their oral and telephone skills are less developed than their ability to type, text and e-mail. Yet to adapt to an old business saying, a meeting is worth five phone calls and a phone call is worth five e-mails. Direct communication can quickly lead to bonding and trust. People are more likely to reveal what they are thinking when they actually speak to another person. Most are wary of committing themselves in writing. The great tragedy, of course, is that the phone was invented before the computer. If it had been the other way around, Internet forums would now be filled with the news: "Have you heard (type, type, type)? There is this amazing new device (type, type). Now you can talk directly with people (type, type, type). Without all this typing." Marketing would do the rest and colleges would be rushing to develop new courses in telephone skills. But, as it is, we are stuck with the supremacy of the typed word and it is getting in the way of our ability to look people in the eye and talk. We should reconsider the technology in which the speed of our fingers is more important than the quality of our voices.
