One busy day, I was racing around
trying to get too much done, and I exclaimed to my three kids in the car, "We
can get both things done and kill two birds with one stone!" My daughter Annie
quietly suggested, "You mean feed two birds with one crumb, Mom, don't you?" I
stopped short, realizing how steeped my language is in the culture of war. I had
used "weapon" language without even knowing it. I was embarrassed and yet felt a
grace: if a child can become conscious of using a new language of peace, then
there is hope. Think about the business language: strategies,
bullets, high-caliber, power point; about win-lose sports language like
"decimate", "attack", "destroy the other team", not to mention the movies and
video games that simulate the most gruesome annihilations over and over. The
lies of propaganda, one-sided media coverage, the alienation of others (those
terrorists, the axis of evil), all part of the "collective psychic numbing" of
our times. The biggest lie of all is that nuclear weapons are going to protect
us. Nuclear weapons are an assault on our life, our planet, and on the Creator
of the universe. It seems to afflict what our people could be as a result of the
mess seeming too big to handle for the average person, disconnected and
disempowered. When the world food programme for children equals 1/70th of the
annual world military expense, we see what a crisis we are in.
Yet it inspired hope with the life examples of Mohandas Gandhi, Martin
Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, Oscar Romero and others. Each
spiritual leader lived the maxim, "no justice, no peace," nonviolently insisting
on the truth, speaking truth to power without harming others or stripping their
dignity. Imagine if we focused on this commonality, rather than what divides us;
imagine if religions and religious leaders promulgated a global culture of peace
and tolerance. We do not have to feel overwhelmed; that U. N. structures, NGO
documents, UNESCO declarations, peoples' ideas for education exist already, that
the internet is a rich source of counterculture information, connectedness and
hope. Of what use is a vote or medical care in a war-torn society? A culture of
war is like a house of cards; the house can fall and give rise, like the
phoenix, to a new culture of peace. There are three fundamental ways to build a
culture of peace: understand, participate, communicate. I'll bet our children
can think of 50 more, going out and waging
peace.

To broaden their voting appeal in the
Presidential election of 1796, the Federalists selected Thomas Pinckney, a
leading South Carolinian, as running mate for the New Englander John Adams. But
Pinckney's Southern friends chose to ignore their party's intentions and
regarded Pinckney as a Presidential candidate, creating a political situation
that Alexander Hamilton was determined to exploit. Hamilton had long been wary
of Adams' stubbornly independent brand of politics and preferred to see his
running mate, over whom he could exert more control, in the President's
chair. The election was held under the system originally
established by the Constitution. At that time there was but a single tally, with
the candidate receiving the largest number of electoral votes declared President
and the candidate with the second largest number declared Vice President.
Hamilton anticipated that all the Federalists in the North would vote for Adams
and Pinckney equally in an attempt to ensure that Jefferson would not be either
first or second in the voting. Pinckney would be solidly supported in the South
while Adams would not. Hamilton concluded if it were possible to divert a few
electoral votes from Adams to Pinckney, Pinckney would receive more than Adams,
yet both Federalists would outpoll Jefferson. Various methods
were used to persuade the electors to vote as Hamilton wished. In the press,
anonymous articles were published attacking Adams for his monarchial tendencies
and Jefferson for being overly democratic, while pushing Pinckney as the only
suitable candidate. In private correspondence with state party leaders the
Hamiltonians encouraged the idea that Adams' popularity was slipping, that he
could not win the election, and that the Federalists could defeat Jefferson only
by supporting Pinckney. Had sectional pride and loyalty not run
as high in New England as in the deep South, Pinckney might well have become
Washington's successor. New Englanders, however, realized that equal votes for
Adams and Pinckney in their states would defeat Adams; therefore, eighteen
electors scratched Pinckney's name from their ballots and deliberately threw
away their second votes to men who were not even running. It was fortunate for
Adams that they did, for the electors from South Carolina completely abandoned
him, giving eight votes to Pinckney and eight to Jefferson. In
the end, Hamilton's interference in Pinckney's candidacy lost even the
Vice-Presidency of South Carolina. Without New England's support, Pinckney
received only 59 electoral votes, finishing third to Adams and Jefferson. He
might have been President in 1797, or as Vice President a serious contender for
the Presidency in 1800; instead, stigmatized by a plot he had not devised, he
served a brief term in the United States Senate and then dropped from sight as a
national influence.

The zenith of Mycenaean power and prosperity was in the early thirteenth century; in this period were built the walls, some of which still stand, and the lion gate. By about 1250 B. C. , when the defenses were renewed and improved, there is evidence of destruction outside the walls. Trade declined; a period of upheaval and deterioration had begun. The Trojan War is thought to have occurred about this time. The traditional date for the fall of Troy is 1184 B.C. , but the American archaeologist Blegen, who made the most complete recent excavations and found clear evidence of a prolonged siege, date the destruction of Troy to about 1240 B.C. It looks as though the Trojan expedition was the last united effort of the Achaeans.
Mycenae was subjected to three successive attacks in the following years. In the first, the houses outside the walls were destroyed; in the second, the citadel was sacked; in the third, it was finally destroyed and not reoccupied. The other mainland palaces were all sacked around 1200 B. C. , presumably by bands of invading Dorian.
